Tricot are genuinely one of the best and most consistent rock bands of the last 9 years, every album is at least good and they have almost no bad songs. Their talent levels and chemistry are hard to beat too
I remember when Fantano did a YUNO review of 3. He called me an Idiot that liked math rock, apologised for calling me a idiot, told me to check it out and called me a bitch at the end. This is the story of how I was introduced to my favorite band of all time.

IMO Black (or Makkuro, the one with the pitch black cover) is one of the best rock albums of the last ten years or so. Always good to see people discussing Tricot.
For anyone unfamiliar with the band, I highly recommend checking out their Audiotree session from 2018. It's basically perfect as a performance and as an overall representation of their sound. Also, more importantly, the dog's name is Wickett for anyone who needed to know.
That performance is what really opened my eyes up to math rock back then! Not just the music, but the cinematography made them seem larger than life to me. I was like "what the hell, this music is really complicated yet catchy and emotional?"
Or you could just recommend their One-Man Tour live at Zepp DiverCity instead, it's like a complete assortment of their music from beginning to the current one.
First, finally a proper Tricot review and not just a 30 second segment on YUNO. Still holding out for a proper CHAI review. Second, really enjoyed this. Not their strongest stuff but the title track slaps.
A couple of things: Super Summer was a rearrangement of a tricot song from 2013 on a collaboration album titled "And Your Birds Can Sing". The old arrangement is great too, and you should check it out! The "wan wan wan" in dogs and ducks is the japanese equivalent to the English "woof". This album, THE, and AND I think are my three favorite tricot albums. They are unbelievably consistent and haven't put out a bad record to date. Anyone who hasn't listened to this band yet should absolutely check them out!
I’m finally glad someone knows mentioned that album lol. I stumbled upon it after listening to another rock band called FLiP that also was apart of that album. Super Summer on that album was the first song of Tricot I listened to. I did not like it but then I listened to more of their songs.
I ended up enjoying their major label releases more and more, personally. Their indie math rock stuffs are fun and all (some of their classic works are there too) but then you had the challenge of maintaining your creative and artistic consistency, probably one of the reason why their first drummer left the band. But their latest release here imo has all that consistency and maturity in the songwriting while still not devoid of creativity, just different.
@@chromaticswing9199 LMAO. To Tricot's credit, the time signature switch ups on T H E are so fucking smooth that they just just fly under the radar if you're not paying attention. 4/4 into 5/4 into 3/4 into 4/4 again on Pool is just too slick
@@GananaPeel Haha that's how you know they're great songwriters! Also on an unrelated note, I happen to know someone irl who uses that username and plays bass haha. Sadly, it's not you but nice coincidence either way!
My favourite of their 3 quick releases in a no-touring world is definitely 10, though I like Jodeki a lot too. 10 just has too many bangers, like WARP and Summer Night Town.
i need fantano to review more japanese bands, a lot of them of them have really interesting genre mix stuff. if i were to give a recommendation go listen to Gesu no kiwami otome, their songs are really interesting
Anything that Enon touch always turn gold, but I'd like to see indigo la End review though. Gesu is a little all over the place and Enon's been exporting Gesu trademark style to his other outfits as well lately (Genie High, DADARAY, Ichikoro, etc). At least ilE still retains its artistic consistency imo.
I absolutely love T H E, its true that the vibes of each song can be very similar but the licks and rhythms themselves are incredibly detailed and varied but what makes it for me its the excellent and passionate vocal performances that make it for me
I feel like he'd have a field day with Japanese bands/artists, considering how much he likes weird, out-there music. Zazen Boys would probably make him coom, before he either gives them a 9 or a 3
The fact this review is out is awesome, spread the word of one of the best rock bands out. Also cool, how many other fans are out there! I had no idea.
Judging from the comments I'm not the only one who thinks Makkuro (Black) is a killer album. The two since then have been strong as well, but that is a personal favourite of mine.
If you like tricot also check out the Japanese rock band negoto. Not sure if they’re still making music but they had some good albums back in the 2010s
Anthony, have you ever heard of the instrumental band Intervals, and if so, why have you never reviewed any of their albums? I would genuinely love to hear your take on the last 3 albums they have released, The Shape of Colour (2015), The Way Forward (2017), and Circadian (2020). they have consistently progressed and honed their style throughout the entirety of those 3 LP's and i sincerely hope you read this and give those albums a listen and possibly do reviews of them.
Thank you for doing an impression of the dog on the cover at the beginning of the video! It's little details like that that make click that dislike button on every video!
I can't agree with you on Kayoko. I think the fact that the vocals and the beat seem out of sync, combined with the "wavey" guitars and the very tasteful drumming, make the song feel very airy and light. It's sort of like a nice cool summer breeze and a very fun listen.
Already the album I've listened to the most this year. I don't like it near as much as 10 or Black, but it's pretty dope and Inai is maybe my favorite individual Tricot song. So hype to see them get a review tho!!
This is the first time since I've started watching Fantano that he's reviewed something that I already listen to and care about outside of a classics week, makes the video real different to watch.

wildly underrated album both in general and among their discography, I think it's my second favorite under THE
