I like this switch. It is compact and looks really cool. There are great bargains to be had on ex-corporate switches on eBay, but these tend to be large, heavy and noisy and generally not suitable for the average home network😄. This is quiet and has a simple web based interface. It is more expensive and doesn't have as much features as say the Zyxel GS1900 offerings - but the build quality is solid and I have never had any reliability issues with Netgear devices.
You could connect your router into any of the ports, it'll figure itself out and 'just work' generally. However I tend to use either the first or last port for my 'up link' to a router, etc. Hope this helps, --Nathan

Do you just put the router into the first port?
You could connect your router into any of the ports, it'll figure itself out and 'just work' generally.
