I have heterochromia (left eye is brown and right eye is green) and I remember being so confused as to why I could make pets but not Sims with it And to this day (without mods ofc), not even TS3 and TS4 has that afaik
Something that Sims 2 players need to understand is that you can either have great customization or realistic genetics. It'd take an insurmountable amount of coding to have both. So The Sims 3 has unlimited customization, but it sacrifices realistic genetics. The Sims 2, on the other hand, has realistic genetics, but really limited customization. Pets are a great example of how, as soon as you want to expand customization, you have to sacrifice genetics. Though, as you pointed out, they could have done a better job with the mixing of small and large dogs.
This! I vastly prefer to have realistic genetics. And personally, Sims 2 customization doesn't feel that limited to me because I feel like you can achieve similar results in appearence regardless of the number of sliders
@@whatever6377 only having 4 hair colors and skin tones is pretty limiting though. geneticized cc skin tones in a wide range are a big improvement on the base game but still don't account for cool/warm tones

@@boybutch god yes, some of those townies are walking around looking like offensive racial caricatures. They made a lot of the "ethnic" face templates look like shit for no reason.
Tbh I wonder if they left the puppies and kittens patternless as a reference to the few real life breeds that only get patterns as they grow up. Mostly in dogs, dalmatians are an example. In cats I think siamese are?
@@Marticore Yep, that’s normal in wild animals. Boars, lions, deer, tapirs etc. It’s to make them blend with the environment more to hide from predators! While the pattern thing in dog and cat breeds is because the pattern shows later for a more complicated reason (I know that in siamese cats they’re “hot spots” basically)
AFAIK the code was there to allow them to inheirit patterns, as it's all done if you look into the files, there was just something wrong with it that didn't allow the patterns to work and a mod easily fixed this in a few moments. I'm guessing it broke during repeat edits and they couldn't figure it out.
I cant believe I played Sims 2 for all these years (and played Pets more than other expansions) and I learned as much as I did in this video. I also had no idea about the right-click to take a percentage of a template!! very interesting! To this day, the pet designer in Sims 2 impresses me. The layering, color choices, it's arguably more in depth than the sim creator. This is why it's one of my favorite expansions
I love using the unlockable weird colors and patterns for pets then breeding them to see what comes through. My favorite is the star pattern fur for cats. I will start investigating heterochromia and report my findings if any. First born syndrome with pets seems quite likely from what I've experienced. Except with the Crittur family in the bin. The 3 puppies that are born always look the same but if you breed Danny and Samantha again the puppies will look more like their parents.
Given that pets were an expansion instead of having the development time of the base game... I wonder if the "cut corners" with their (lack of) genetics was an omen of things to come with 3 and 4.
I'm actually pretty glad the modified coat can be inherited, so they can't pass down ugly coats, but my modified ones lol. I'm just diappointed that the eye colour can't be directly changed, although there are workarounds via the breed saving. Useful if you want your kittens or pups to have heterochromia Pet breeding is one of my favourite things in SIms 2 right now, especially with the additional coat patterns and the other KittenintheWindow mods, I really love seeing buried layers expressed on my pets offspring. Another thing I realized with my pets (which is probably purely coincidental, but it's happened a lot so far) is that usually when having three kittens or pups, two of them are exact copied of one another, while the third is the odd one out. Since it wasn't mentioned in the video I'm guessing it's nothing, but I find it a little odd it happened so often in my game when I too have hundreds of different layers on both parents and two of the children happen to inherit the exact same, including eye colour, while the third sibling tends to look completely different Also, the premade dog breeds are awful and unrealistic and I'm currently remaking them to look like their real-life counterparts and guess what? They all just look way cuter and not the same anymore (seriously the default dog snout especially is giving me nightmares and I hate that it's just copy and paste applied to almost all breeds) I've actually considered uploading them to MTS, because they turned out really well despite the frankly limited sliders (which are even more limited on cats ;-;)
It is patently obvious now that the devs were testing out sims 3 genetics with sims 2 pets. And because we were all so excited by PETS!!!! they were like 'well, okay, players are fine with this downgrade in genetics, let's roll with it.'
I tried so much breeding to get brightly coloured kittens and puppies and nearly always ended up with white or brown xD I think I got a litter of light pink ones once, but then got bored with the time in that household it took to breed the pets (without cheats/mods 'cause I had a slow computer when CC was on). I wasn't very good at the layering aspect of pet genetics.
All this time and I never understood why breeding large and small dogs together never produced an interesting mix... now I know it's always the mother dog's clone!! Amazing
At this point i don t even bother to understand genetics in the sims 2. It s way beyond my brain and my brain is fried at this point. It s funny how the first born syndrome is also here but i think that this time around this is unfixable compared to the sims one

That explains how our brown-white-red mother cat and white father cat ended up producing black-white female kittens, red Male kittens and one red-white male kitten... 🤣
I'm confused on the red/ginger fur thing, but it might be the translation that didn't translate well, but it seemed to me you said only females can be ginger because the red colour is in the X chromosome? That confuses me because I have 2 male ginger cats xD
Does anyone know if the witches' familiars have genetics? I used the puppy creator to make a dog, and the evil witch familiar was available as a parent option, so chose it. The puppy was (I think) just like the other pet parent, so I don't know if there's no genetics to pass down, or if it was just bad luck.
It always irritated me that when mixing a big and small dog, you get a clone of the mum! Like, why? I like to play mad scientist and mix breeds, I want to see different things coming out, not a literal clone! xD
Idk about animals but heterochromia in humans is a dominant gene, I would know; I have it myself. It seems far more common in cats than humans though. There is more than one type of heterochromia and not all are as noticeable as the type I have which is complete heterochromia. It is a shame that pet genetics don't really mix that much, would be cool to mix different breeds and register their offspring as new breeds cause registering breeds is a thing in the game.
I'd like a mod to customize ears or tails , 😫, is it to much? like not genetically , just like a sims 'plastic surgery'.. kind of. Some of my born in game pets don't have the ears I want
It always made me envious (?) that pets had so many more eye and hair colour options than sims lol
This. The customization of pets is more complex than Sims in every Sims game from 2 to 4 😆

Pointed cats do indeed develop their pattern as they age, but in real life they start out lighter and the darker points come in later.

Do pet babies affect the human generated babies? Like, do they work from the same seed or are they completely independent?
Yes, anything spawned/randomized in game impacts the sequence, that's why rolling Sims in CAS helps with firstborn syndrome
