My aunt Roxolana will be overjoyed to hear that she received such commendation and kind words from you, and that she was indeed worthy of being part of one of the "greatest recordings ever!" She certainly, and rightly, considers it to represent her best work. I'll be sure to share this video with her (and make sure she watches it!).

As a brass musician I have owned 2 copies on LP, and one CD.
Henry Charles Smith is also(a very good conductor) and he guess conducted my (undergrad) orchestra. He was wonderful & our time with him was fantastic & extremely musical.
Later in grad school I studied with Gilbert Johnson. He had some demans to deal with, but not only one of the finest trumpeter of all time also a fine piano player (classical & jazz) and all around great musician.
They were both sweet, wonderful men with great sense of humor.
Hanging in Gils studio was a very well made copy of the original Hindemith LP cover autographed by all the brass performers & Gould 👍

My piano teacher used to say Gould was a terrible Brahms interpreter but I like his interpretations above all others

Which recording? There’s 3x of the 1st concerto (live), the idyllic Intermezzo disc, the Piano Quintet or his last disc of ballades and the two op 79 rhapsodies?

The beauty of Mason Jones' performance of the Alto Horn Sonata, is that he performs it on an alto horn. This work is most often performed on french horn or alto sax. But I've found that it lays beautifully on an alto trombone, and have performed it as such. I think it's a delightful work.

I'd like to mention another off-beat Gould recording: transcriptions of Wagner, a composer nobody associates with Gould. However, we should remember that one of Gould's favorite musicians was Stokowski. So Gould wasn't exclusively a "line guy," in Dave's phrase.

There can be no other choice. All soloists are top notch...the best available. And the unifying character is Gould, who is the most perfect pianist for Hindemith, with his obsession with inner lines and clarity.

LOL. I understand that Glenn Gould's surname was originally "Gold", and he was of English, Scottish and Norwegian ancestry. According to Wikipedia, "The family's surname was informally changed to Gould around 1939 to avoid being mistaken for Jewish, given the prevailing antisemitism of prewar Toronto".

Love the Trumpet Sonata, whose very tricky part I once had to play for an examination with Harrison Birtwistle as one of the examiners. Sad that GG never recorded Ludus Tonalis.
Dave, have you done a comparison of the the two versions of Das Marienleben?

I adore the 3rd sonata , one of his most programmed works when he was giving concerts. There’s a video of him playing the last movement from the 3rd on RUclips. Dave, his liner notes for the piano sonatas won an award ? Roxy R was Glenn’s girlfriend in the 1970s. She taught in Canada for many years.

Very good and important video. I am currently listening to many recordings of Gould's 81 CD box released in 2015, and there are not only the Bach recordings of the highest interpretative quality, but also the last 6 Haydn sonatas, the late recording of the Strauss sonata, the wonderful Berg Sonata No.1 from 1958, the early Beethoven piano concertos and much more. The only thing I will probably never “get used to” is Gould's Mozart.

That's a great choice! Hindemith has been eclipsed, but the music still stands if people will just seek it out. And the pianist shall henceforth be called Glenn Goldgloggh. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Gould's greatest recording isn't the Goldberg, it's Alban Berg's Piano Sonata.
