“We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.” --- Jerry Garcia
Black Licorice was actually what Jerry said. Because a lot of people actually like licorice but few like black licorice.
@@kevincosta9228 Not finding any evidence of that. "Black licorice" is basically redundant and has only come into the parlance because some people call "Red Vines", "red licorice" when there is no licorice at all in Red Vines.
@@floorticket I had to look it up. Seems it's been quoted both ways. But you're right, red licorice isn't really licorice, never knew that. I learn something every day.
Jack Bauer what is actual licorice anyway?
Jack Bauer you don’t have to give them up but really don’t think it’s licorice.
There was nothing like a Grateful Dead show.
And never will be ⚡ it was like being in a whole nother dimension every show!
"They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do." -- Bill Graham, 12-31-78
If you want Grateful Dead prog I have just 2 words: Terrapin Station!
I agree but for that one - you need to do the entire thing from the studio album. Although they play some of it live, they never (almost never?) do the whole thing live and you need to hear the whole thing. After that, if you want to check out some live version(s), have at it.
@@neonpark1874 Yes, that is a full blown, fusion rock song performed with an entire orchestra. Must hear the studio version on that.
The new remaster sounds better than the original and yes it’s a wonderful piece and the lyrics are some of Hunters best. It’s about 17 minutes long but no big guitar solo is jamming it’s like a symphony
YES... when I hear the first chords of Lady With a Fan... chills up and down my whole body because I know I’m about to go on one hell of a ride!!
@@dyanalynn6698 it’s a beautiful symphony of song. Too bad they didn’t do the whole piece live.
The Grateful Dead played 2,350 shows during their career, and they had well over 500 songs in their repertoire. When they walked on stage they had no idea what would get played, the songs they played either flowed one from the other naturally or they got called, but at any given show nobody had any idea what would happen, including the band. Of those 2,350 shows well over 2,200 shows were recorded and can be found on archive.org

Yes..since the Dead allowed people to tape their shows, people collected shows, combos of 2 songs played together, and 3 together, like this one. Because they combined them differently and beautifully, each time... each entity becomes a collectors item in its own right. Collecting shows and song combos I believe still goes on... thus the show dates all the time.
I LOVE LICORICE.
RIP Jerry
Miss his notes...
This is a great example of what a deadhead loves! The endless transitions and improvs... juss groovin to sound, as one.
FINALLY
someone on youtube reacted to this gem
great job bro
Old bumper sticker from Dead tour in the 80's:
"In the land of the dark, the ship of the sun is driven by the Grateful Dead"
Loved seeing your reaction to this--
You would've fit right in at a show back in the day~ ✌
I have a Dancing Bears license-plate frame that says "Have A Grateful Day"
Poem: The Egyptian book of the Dead.
We now return our souls to the creator,
as we stand on the edge of eternal darkness.
Let our chant fill the void,
in order that others may know.
In the land of the night,
the ship of the sun,
is drawn by the grateful dead.
"I feel like he is talking to me" you just got it man every hippie felt like they where singing the songs directly to them, it's the connection between the band and audience that created such a memorable experience
Actually scratch that please do: not fade away>going down the road feeling bad
@@Theopengrove Goin' where the climate suits my clothes!
One of my favorite things about the Dead is that the moment you think the jam has hit its apex is usually just the beginning of something much more
I've not listened to too much Grateful Dead. This reminds me a little of Steely Dan with that jazz flavor and smooth delivery. Something else I'll have to explore.
At that moment bout half way through when you said "oh Wow" that feeling of joy times 1000 is exactly what it was like at a show. At my first show the entire audience all sighed deeply, spontaneously, together as if on cue. That memory still gives me goosebumps to this day 33yrs later. Sure hope they step it up on that time machine it's gonna be awesome to see them all. PeaceOrElse
This was the show that, when it was over, I was ON THE BUS.
One of my favorite "medly's" by the Dead. Thank you Daniel.
DNA, Genetics, Family, Eternal life, (Reincarnation)
In another time's forgotten space... your eyes looked from your mother's face...
wildflower seed and the wind and sand,.....
What if our souls are blown about down the family line? Robert Hunter does get deep.
Safely home... could be...One with the Divine between physical lives (Heaven?) or.... could be our physical life?
It does seem open to interpretation like all Hunter's lyrics, but definitely thought provoking.
Sa weet, thank you-Now we are traveling, moving, vibing and hopefully you will become more entrenched in the experience. :)
Yes. Franklin's Tower is Ben Franklin's tower and the bell that "you can ring from night to day, ring like fire when you lose your way" is the Liberty Bell.
The Dead write Americana. Many of their lyrics are strongly rooted in american history and tradition. Trying to uphold the brighter side of the tradition with songs like this and Liberty.
If you like the proggy side of the Dead, you definitely want to check out Terrapin Station, and Lazy Lightning/Supplication.
Lazy Lightning from every technical level is easily the most musically advanced and difficult song the band ever wrote. The only performed it live for a few years because playing it is such a difficult undertaking.
Fell in love with this Album I 1979 I was 19
Good choice. Love this era in particular
I've never been a huge Grateful Dead fan but I'm a huge fan of you so I will take the journey with you
Their live stuff is quite inspiring:)
@@DiconDissectionalReactions like I said I'm sticking with you on this journey but I can't wait till we get to more Steely Dan as well as songs from the wood that's my passion as well as heavy horses the next album...
@@daveking9393 We'll get there, it'll be a journey but we'll get there:)
Stand Up is next for Tull, but there will be more SD to tide you over as we go
Great song pick!! AS a longtime GD fan Ive been curious why none of the reactors have stumbled upon this one. Its got a nice jazzy vibe like a looser version of steely dan and really showcases their playing/writing abilities. Also RObert Hunter is one of the best lyricists who ever put pen to paper
Franklin's Tower always made me think of Captain Sir John Franklin and his ill-fated expedition to discover the Northwest Passage. Sometimes you feel as lost as Franklin, trapped in the ice. Roll away the dew, listen to the ship's bell, find yourself safely home.
That’s a really interesting take. Never thought of that but it fits
The Dead would often put multiple songs together, some played together for years (China/Rider) and others that would be interchanged (after a couple of years) ... but, in essence, listening to the Dead makes you smile
Sound is working perfectly fine on this one
As we've all said, their musical catalog covers so much ground it's absurd. You always know it's the Dead though. BTW, here's an amusing story another local Dead Head told me.
They had a habit of doing "Playing in the Band" in the first set but instead of doing the last chorus they'd transition to a different song. Then, near the end of the concert they'd play the last chorus of "Playing in the Band".
Well, my friend saw them at all their New England appearances on one of their tours. As the concert, in Vermont, IIRC, came to a close they played the last chorus of Playing in the Band. My friend suddenly thought "Wait, what? they didn't play the beginning of the song tonight. Then it dawned on him, they played the beginning of the song the previous night in Boston then finished it the next night in another city. Just a little "gotcha" for the die hard fans.
dozens of shows, never saw a single physical altercation 🙏🦋🌈🌞🌻✌🏻✨
This is so exciting! I’ve watched several of your videos - starting a day or two ago, and I was hoping you’d dig a little deeper on the Dead. I got to see them perform this suite live in 1995 a few months before Jerry Garcia passed.
They were the ultimate and one of the first of what I would call a "Jam" Band. That is to say, they never played a song the same way twice. A great deal of improvisation within the form of each song. On stage, they would take visual and audio cues from one another during the performance.
Also you don't have to worry about copyright strikes with GD tunes.
I had the same exact smile when I heard this for the first time☮️💯💚
Yep. You’re a hippie. ❤️
The 3 songs are considered 1 suite because that's how they always played it live and on the album. Rare for them to play one without the others.although Franklin's tower was played alone alot during some years. Franklin's tower supposedly refered to dangers of nuclear war," God save the child that rings that bell"!
There is that one killer version from 76, where they went into drums during slipknot and then into samson and then back into slipknot and franklin's. That was OUT THERE.
The Grateful Dead was not always my cup of tea, but always appreciated the fervent loyalty of their fandom, which exists to this day. Also congrats on TWO videos exceeding 10K views the same day, and hitting over 300K total views. New milestones every day.
@George Wodicka. I'm with you on this, not always a Dead fan but knew a lot of Deadheads in college at CU Boulder (somewhat obligatory in the late 70's/early 80's, lol !) A truly dedicated fanbase. Thanks for keeping us all up on Daniel's stats, The Legion Rocks!
✌❤🌻😷🎶
Btw, "Estimated Prophet" (studio), "Alabama Getaway", and "One More Saturday Night" (live version) are all worth hearing.
Estimated is 🔥
best walking bass line in 7/4 time from Estimated Prophet.
Picture a huge grassy area, filled with people dancing with huge smiles - that's a Dead show.
That Skull image you like is called a "Stealie" - from the cover of 'Steal Your Face'
Fabulous choice of versions.... Later years were much slower .... Jerry comes right in on this one! Loves it! These shows changed my life and still do every day #NFA ⚡️🌹⚡️
First saw The Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden in NYC in early January of 1979. Still remember it like it was yesterday which is a bit surprising since I don’t remember much from the hazy 70s, lol.
No way! My first Dead show too. It was freezing outside but the Garden glowed with the warmth of all those souls moving as one.
Those three were basically always played together, but before they dusted that trio off in '89 after a four-year absence, we would get Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin's Tower in the first set quite often. That was Bill Graham introducing the band. This show was unique, the Dead only played four shows in '75. This show was basically impossible for mere mortals to get into. Invite only concert for industry types to the Great American Music Hall that holds less than 500. It was the album release party for Blues for Allah. I've been many times to GAMH to see other bands. Seeing the dead there would have been crazy. Tiny stage. Check out the ornate interior on google images. It used to be a bordello.
Ha! I forgot about in the 90's when Feel Like a Stranger would go into Franklin's! Great call, David. I don't listen to much of that era of the Dead. The era I listen to most often would be from 1967-1983.
I like your immediate insight into their lyrics. The Grateful Dead said that their lyrics were written in such a way that we can apply whatever meaning we want to most of them. Of course there are many verses and/or choruses that have objective meanings too but for the most part they left them open to personal interpretation. If you ever get a moment would you please do the Grateful Dead's studio version of "Terrapin Station"? It's a real gem.
DeadHeads call this Help/Slip/Franklins,, it made it easier when writing down set lists. Other good twofers include China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider (China/Rider), Scarlet Begonias>Fire Ont The Mountain (Scarlet/Fire) and of course Estimated Prophet>Eyes Of The World (Estimated/Eyes). All worth a listen. Please enjoy everyone.
And seeing the Grateful Dead live is a whole other mind-blowing experience, saw them in Highgate ( Great name for a town to see these guys) Vermont, mid 90's maybe, amazing!
Some things just don’t come across on recordings. The Dead were experts at playing the space they were in. If you saw them once youd probably go see them again and bring a friend and so on. That’s how they built their following.
Unfortunately Jerry had lost it by then. I saw them for the first time in 1983 in Hartford Ct and then I was hooked. Saw over a hundred show from 1983-90
Thomas Sirman he didn’t lose it. He was very ill and never should have been on the road.
Hartlor Tayley I was on tour from 83-90. I saw a maybe a dozen shows after Brent died and the band wasn’t ever on. I never saw a good show after the summer of 1990.
Thomas Sirman yeah I only saw a handful of shows after 85. I know what you mean. Jerry was burned out on Grateful Dead. The Garcia band was more his cup of tea at that point. Honestly I think Garcia was a freakin genius and deserved band that was more on his level than the dead often were.
1975 was their “year off” when they only did a handful
of shows, and the time away from the road clearly did them some good. They shelved the amazing but unwieldy Wall of Sound and came out with a new, smaller Alembic PA that tightened their sound, and they took off fully into prog rock with Blues For Allah. This show was that album’s live debut. Another amazing track from the same disc is the instrumental King Solomon’s Marbles- a prog rock masterpiece completely in 7/4 time. Tight as a drum! (NOT something often said about The Dead) Also, The Music Never Stopped is another Great American Music Hall stand-out.
PS- the “roll away the dew” melody was partly inspired by Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side.
"Slipknot!" is a great example of how well this band could lock in with one another. Check out "King Solomon's Marbles" from this same show. It's a super-tricky 7-beat tune but since this was the album-release gig, they had it down TIGHT. The "China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider" suites from 1972-1974 are also all one of these extremely-tight locked-in grooves. Live Dead is the truth.
Drumz for dayyyys omg
NOW we're cookin with fire !! just awesome. and it gets better. Kudos for you for being open to this. took me until i was 30, and the proper exposure (and the proper listening 'enhancements' ;O) to get it). i wish i had gotten it at a younger age but then i'd have probably disappeared from society and followed them around the country. there is NOTHING like a grateful dead show. you got a taste here of how they can take the music places. ...this just gets a tad 'out there'....the go much much further. They are so different....their music can be simplistic and complex at the same time if that makes any sense. there is always A LOT going on within a simple chord progression. i always said i'd love to see someone put sheet music together from one of their live performances...like Dark Star. not that i could read it...but...it'd probably look insane... great reaction. keep it up., oh...as far as progressive...probably the most progressive is Terrapin Station....and altho i'm more a fan of the live stuff, that one you might want to check out the studio version as they don't do the entire thing live. it's incredible. also.....for serious jazzy feel....check out the Eyes Of The World from the album 'without a net'. branford marsalis sits in and it is CRAZY.....i was at that show. mind BLOWn
so glad you checked this out! shame you missed out the intro, it has the each band member being announced while they play a slow build instrumental piece, with the 'welcome please, the grateful dead' kicking it off. gets me so hyped every time
💯 on the full intro... It's one of my fave Bill Graham intros... You can hear the full understanding in his voice.
I’ve listened to this album so many times while tripping. Definitely my go to.
Great stuff! It’s nice to see someone react to more live Dead.
Arguably the best band of all time but definitely the “Gratest”American band of all time!
Absolutely. There was no American band with more depth and layers than the grateful Dead , except maybe Zappa⚡
Disagree
I agree 100% If you look into their stats and history no one even comes close.
Fast becoming my favorite reaction channel. Very nice! 👍🏻
Help on the way studio is a great song.... I’m not a dead head but love help on the way studio.... awesome guitar solo
I love watching people enjoying the Dead. I used to turn around and look at the crowd when I was at a show. Such a treat. Glad you like it.
You're just getting started on your journey, and I envy you, in a way. So much to look forward to! I started with The Dead at about 14 yrs old and have just turned 65 and probably listen now more than ever! Since you're a lyricist, you will enjoy your trip with Robert Hunter (wrote primarily with Garcia) and John Perry Barlow's (wrote primarily with Weir) lyrics. Great stuff! I heard you mention, "I don't know why they're all together (these three songs) like this". You will also find that certain song "groupings/pairings" are prevalent in their live shows. Deadheads have named a lot of them "Help/Slip/Tower" or "China/Rider" (China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider) or "Scarlet/Fire" (Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain), there are more, but you get the picture! One of the truly great things about The Dead is that they had the sense to record damn near everything they ever did! I'm still discovering "favorite" versions of songs I may have heard a hundred (or more) times before! I'm going to drop you this tasty "China>Rider" here, from Winterland 1974. A lot of footage from this run made it into "The Grateful Dead Movie". I love the dancing kids on stage! 70's Dead is hard to beat for me, but I love it all! ruclips.net/video/EvPe4CEkSbE/видео.html
Tom Mathews man that takes me back.
@@Hartlor_Tayley Ain't it so! That's one reason I get such a kick out of these reaction videos! Remembering what it was like for me to hear this for the first time! Watch that China/Rider I just dropped him! Jerry playing Wolf is magic for me!
Tom Mathews I love how it’s all so warm and casual, it just flows.
@@Hartlor_Tayley Exactly! And full of that signature "bounce" The Dead really had, especially in this period. I'd like for Daniel to get a good dose of the "Scarlett/Fire" from Cornell 77! That's a stellar version! The sound is so great on those Betty Boards, from 77 especially! I made two shows that year, Tuscaloosa AL, and Atlanta GA. A very strong year for The Dead, in my book!
Tom Mathews Houston 1972 version of Playin in the band. Weir sings a verse or two then it’s straight into wild freeform improv for 25 minutes, and it goes places. . I think the freeform jamming is one of the most charming and unique qualities that the band had but I don’t know how this sounds to people in 2020. I mean we request the accessible songs and don’t bother requesting the more out there type of stuff, funny thing is it was the really out there jams and songs that got me into them in the first place. Here is that “Playin”. All 26 minutes. To me it’s a thrilling ride. archive.org/details/gd1972-11-18.123077.sbd.miller.flac16/gd72-11-18d1t06.flac#i
Where the heck has this channel been hiding? Great reaction. Can't wait to dive into what you've done, and any future reactions/analysis you intend on doing. Until then, keep safe and keep on keeping on.
Welcome aboard! Glad you enjoyed it:)
Thank you very much for doing this triplet of songs. The Deadheads will be so pleased, they will follow your channel for thirty years. The follow up Album is Terrapin Station, the title track is even more proggy but it’s an entire album side. If you like help on the way you’ll probably like Terrapin. The recent remastered version is best. They never played this song suite in its entirety live, much to the chagrin of Mr Hunter. Imho the Garcia Hunter ballads are where the Dead really set themselves apart. This performance you reacted to is like halfway between studio and live stylistically. Love all the comments about this piece. The Good and the Bad. I wish you had more time to delve into lyrics more. Great reaction and analysis.
My favorite songs by them are Truckin' and Touch of Grey. Good barbequeing music. Great live band...saw them in Austin, Tx in the early eighties...Got high on the fumes.
Good Choice!! Miles Davis (I hope you know who he was) said of the Dead "They're a jazz band who plays rock". This brings that to life. The Great American Music Hall was a small room. This show was their first since they " broke up" some 14 months before. This was also the first time they had played these songs publicly. Your observation about them playing one song into the next and making it work is exactly what they did. You'll recall Sugar Magnolia ended with the "Sunshine Daydream" part. I saw a couple of shows that they started with Sugar Magnolia and didn't play the end part but instead went into another song and another song and so on. Anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours later, they would spontaneously start Sunshine Daydream out of nowhere and it all worked. If you're interested in going down this rabbit hole even further, I recommend a website, www.archive.org. It has all sorts of recordings there. They have a Grateful Dead section with literally hundreds of shows. The Dead always allowed the audience to tape their shows to the point that their shows always had a tapper's section. As a result, there are thousands of cassette tapes that are traded. This community is awesome!
Dude ! NOW YOU'VE discovered the why? In " why the dancing bear " ..... Welcome my little DeadHead
Cornell 1977 is the crown jewel in my opinion, enjoy! Been a deadhead since 1968 lol.
They usually dropped Help on the Way in, in the middle of a show somewhere to coincide the acidy jam with the acid trip everyone e was just starting to peak on-around mid show.. That's the Grateful Dead
' trip'!! Franklin's Tower one of my fav songs live, a sea of peaceful loving flowing tie dye. ❤️✌️
Pretty sure the bell referred to is the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, which was in the State House. It used to hang in a bell tower and was rung tio summon people to public meetings. The old 50 cent coins had Ben Franklin on one side and the Liberty Bell on the other, but I don’t think there was a tower called Franklin’s Tower.
Yes the liberty bell. May one good ring you can’t tell ( because it’s cracked). God save the child who rings that bell. ( like in 1776) the fight for liberty requires constant vigilance. One watch by night one watch by day. Rings like fire if you lose your way.
Nonsense
@@bradhelms9408 I think Hunter said it’s about the liberty bell.
These tracks are the ones that open the album Blues for Allah, quite possible their proggiest, with a strong jazz influence, together with Wake of the Flood and the song Terrapin Station. Although I love their sound live, Blues for Allah is an amazing studio record and worth checking some of that stuff on studio version. Great insight as always, Daniel!
My fave is when Jerry tinkers some Miles Davis or the Beatles outta nowhere.
i had a very strange experience one time listening to those 2 albums in one sitting without psychedelics….it was crazy…
Jazz was big at that time with Herbie Hancock, Chick Correa, Pat Metheny, Weather Report and a bunch of others
To us this was their Jazz album.
There is nothing like the experience of being in the middle of a live Grateful Dead concert. The energy is electrifying as you feel the love everywhere flowing through you.
If you like the lyrics to, "Box Of Rain", then you will also love the lyrics of this song. "Ripple", it is also from their album, "American Beauty."
💀&🌹4Ever!!! ✌
Franklins BBQ is an icon in Austin. There’s always long lines. I recommend the mesquite smoked beef brisket. Go early, they always run out.
Ps, I’m not implying this song is about this...I have no clue about Franklins tower...maybe a local hangout where there’s impromptu Drum circles,
Tie dye demos, hash brownies for sale, macrame, dream catchers....I m picturing it in upstate New York...or Vermont.
This is a fantastic version of Help/Slipknot/Franklin's. One of the best available.
Been a Deadhead since I first saw them in Boston in 1967 and I have collected over 5,000 hours of live stuff. 🐱👓
I love the poetic way you read the lyrics...
They weren't always this good, but that's why you needed to catch as many shows on any given tour as possible. You never knew when lightning would strike.
This Slipknot is the standard
That first note jerry hits on franklins is the sweetest note ever
Back for another listen. This was so fun.
also a suggestion; birdsong from pacific northwest 73-74
Now you are getting all of your individual ‘plates spinning’ in rythem!
😇
Your 13:10 -ish comment is GOLD! The crowds were FANTASTIC ( bit rough in the 90's). Some people dancing to 4/4 time, some dancing to the off beat of the drums, or Phil's bass or Jerry's guitar.. It's a beautiful mess. Just FEEL the music. And always remember: "If you get confused just listen to the music play"....!!
You may also want to look at Michael Palmisano's youtube channel. He is a guitar teacher who recently got the GD bug and has been reacting to great GD material. He breaks it down chord by chord, note by note as only a teacher can! Cheers!
It’d be kind of appropriate to follow up this terrific reaction with a live Phish reaction. There are certainly similarities in that both bands are improvisational/prog/jam/dancey, but they don’t really sound the same. No coincidence that they share many of the same fans though. Check out “Chalkdust Torture” or “Down with Disease” for a rocking groove, “Tube” for a funk number with a mighty blues change, “Stash” for fun prog, “Run Like an Antelope” for absolute improv insanity. Edit - “Divided Sky” is a beautiful tune that showcases the band’s more prog-composition chops.
Phish is 🗑
H/S/F was the holy grail. Was lucky enough to catch one in Eugene in 93' saw 10 more shows and never caught it again.
Help on the way is about becoming a deadhead. The dream is touring with the Dead.
By far the best version. Just incredible.
The satirical news site The Onion did a fake history of the 20th century. This was an entry for 1967:
*Grateful Dead Begins Playing 28-Year Song
*
SAN FRANCISCO, 8 APRIL 1967 -- The Grateful Dead, a San Francisco- area rock group, began "jamming" an improvisational fusion of rock, folk, jazz, bluegrass and country Friday which the group claims it will continue to play through the mid-1990s.
It’s funny cuz it’s true.
Loved the Onion's 9/11 headline - "What the fuck? Seriously, what the fucking fuck?"
Wonderful honest, genuine reaction. Loved it!! New subscriber based on your 4 GD reactions. I will share as well to try and help you drum up subscriber-ship. I have numerous suggestions, but your Patreon friend is doing ok.
I would like to point out that many songs in the GD repertoire are actually released on Jerry Garcia solo albums. Unfortunately the Garcia estate will block these videos.
If you're interested you should research the battle over Jerry Garcia's Estate. It's ugly.
So maybe copy and paste these songs below to a note or .txt file as reference on your desktop to save you some time and energy in the future. This list should obviously include anything with Jerry Garcia's name as the artist either solo, with John Kahn, or with Merle Saunders, or the Jerry Garcia Band. It may even include other side projects he had such as Old and in the way, Legions of Mary, or Reconstruction.
It sucks bad, I know.

I'm no lawyer, and I might be wrong. These are just observances I've gathered from other reactors whom say they're GD videos have been blocked.
Keep up the good work. I'm gonna check out your Dan videos next. Curious how you react to those lyrics as they can be kinda dark in contrast to the fantastic sound of the songs.
To avoid writing a novel here today, I'll make more comments to break up the topics.
Peace from New Orleans.
First show 1978 they opened with this
Hooked me in forever
THANK YOU!! Great pick!
I've always loved the intro!
After minute 10, I can see that you are starting to ‘get it’
🌞
Jerry is definitely tweeking hard on some good Yaho. He’s playing fast.
It's the translation//////transition...tieing one to another...so subtle...so strong...musical geniuses...just let your-self go...magical...
Dare I say, we've welcomed another person into the fold
That feeling is Jerry’s guitar
Everytime I introduce the dead to somebody who hasn't really heard them ....I offer them this opener. If they don't like it then that's a wrap
They have a lot of songs that are part of a medley or are meant to go together. Like, for dead heads, this is called help/slip/frank and as you saw one goes into another ☺️ Like chinacat/rider, scarlet/fire, sailor/circumstance, estimated/eyes, st stephen/the eleven n many more 😉
And, the skull is called a Steal your face or sometimes a stealie. It’s a line in a song called he’s gone. Steal your face right off your head. It’s so famous, there’s a venue in Palo Alto called shoreline amphitheater that an aerial photo of the venue is a steal your face. It was literally made for the dead ☺️
Robert Hunter is a fine poet too.
Ben Franklin…
Never thought of That archetype
But there,
You EXACTLY have it!
It is both ‘collective’, and individual,
At the same time
🕉
Almost ‘perfect’
UNITY
😇
On this same album is the epic masterpiece "Eyes of the World".
How do I make a request? I love your reaction to “you get confused listen to the music play” and the solo to follow. You’ve got heart, man!
Who are the Grateful Dead and why do they keep following me?
Way back in the olden time hen i would eat gobbs of lsd and see the music, it was always blocks of massive stones that layered each instrument. I miss them so. Thank you little hippie type dude. The Deads catalog is vast young Padawan, bend your ears to hear the tunes. ✌❤🇺🇸😜
The crazyest mashup ever is “ If you wanna breathe my sulfur”. Slipknot n Spice Girls. Watched it 4 times in a row.

Grateful Dead lyrics, annotated. Click on the song you want to learn more about and you'll see some interesting stuff. Some info is from Bob Hunter himself! Often quite enlightening.
Weather Report suite
I second this-- I was going to suggest it, too.
Have you heard Weir's solo acoustic demo of Weather Report Suite?
It's gorgeous....
@@lisarainbow9703 no, I will check it out. Ty
Try and get the entire intro by Bill Graham. As he introduces each member, they begin playing their corresponding instrument. Great intro --> great energy. Didn't see my first show till 12/79 but definitely got on here.
Jazzy, yes. The bass bombs are juicy. Loving the drums chase each other. They are focused and on point.
Of course you missed the amazing intro of the band by Bill Graham, leading into Help on the Way. It’s a classic.
Nothing better than Jerry Garcia's guitar notes when he's in jam mode.
That image is called a “steal your face” ☺️ It’s a line from a dead song. Steal your face right off your head
