    What a charming puzzle!
    Also love to see the letter marks getting some love, feel like there are a lot of puzzles those would be super helpful in (in particular I personally think they're much better suited than shading for "marking known positions of an unknown specific value" use, since they can be used for either type of pencil mark and therefore can clearly record much more info about possible locations of those unknowns than shades without needing to resort to complex systems of flashes)

    • @HunterJE
      @HunterJE 2 года назад +1

      The other reason they're great is there are 26 of them and 25 of them are unambiguously distinguishable (I'd avoid "O" in the rare puzzle where "0" might be in play, but how often does that happen anyways?)

    I was utterly baffled by this one when I tried it, because I thought that "in a relationship" meant that there was a MATHEMATICAL relationship - like that they were doubles, or triples, or apart by some sum. I spent forever trying to figure out what that relationship could be, and never considered that it was just grouping arbitrary sets, and that the puzzle could be partially derived without *knowing* the relationship.

    Polyamory is when 3 or more people are in a relationship, and a relationship between more than 2 people is called a polycule. Polycules can have many forms, and not every member of one need be involved with every other.

    I did it slightly differently. I had already labelled most of the cells so that I could find matches (like how Simon did with the red cells using greys, but for all the colours). I then realised that the three cells making up the nine appear inside the sandwhich for the 18 clue and thus the remaining cell had to be a 9. Wasn't until a little later that I remembered the secret and applied it to column 9.

    Rather than calling the throuple "non-binary", you could call it a ménage-à-trois!
    I figured out all the colouring (and straight away started by working out _which_ of each pair went where), which would have been great if I hadn't somehow disambobbinified the deadly pattern in the threesome in columns 1 or 3 _the wrong way round_ ... no idea why but I thought I had resolved it just from the colouring ... but that then ballsed up the sums, unsurprisingly, and the whole thing came crashing down around my ears 😭

    One way you could tell that the couple on r5c7 and r6c7 have to be yellow quicker is by thinking about what has to go into column 6. By recognizing that you have to put two blue and two purple into column 6, and that they can’t go together, you must make the r5c7 r6c7 couple yellow. That then differentiates the couples around it.
    I saw this at 18:17 and was tearing my hair out until Simon got back around to that couple. How Simon and I’s brains work completely in the opposite way never ceases to amaze me!

    The full 9 color fill of the grid makes it really easy to break-in plus being wonderful to the eyes having it completed. I got to the same point as 41:20, but the next step solve path was slightly different. I noted that R{1,2,3}C4 summed to 15, but then I noted that R{1,3}C5 sum to 12, which meant that the remaining cells of box 2 summed to 18, however R1C{6,7,8} are the _exact same digits_ as R1C6 (Simon's unlabeled yellow, in both sets), R2C5 (Simon's purple-A), and R3C6 (Simon's red w/light gray flash)! 18-9 is 9, therefore R2C6 = 9.
    I was also able to color all the cells without using the 20-sandwich to eliminate the thruple coloration from R{4,5}C3, by finding a blue/yellow pair box 9 which forced the thruple out of the C{3,4} domino on row 7, and then eventually noticing that I had not colored any squares thruple in column 4, and could only place one thruple square in box 8. This forced box 5's column-4 domino to be thrupled, eliminating it from the box 4 domino in column 3.

    Fascinating puzzle. When you were explaining the rules I really could not get my head around it until you said that the nine digits had been divided into three pairs and one triple. Then it made sense to me, and the solve was really fun to watch. One of my favorite moments was toward the end when you reached your left arm across the top of your head and looked as if you were going to try to pull your right ear off in delight with the logic you had just discovered! Made me laugh. Thanks for this video! (I could have done with a little less of the innuendo stuff, it was not necessary to the solve, though I gather that many viewers find it very amusing. I do appreciate that you don't go as far as you could, so I guess I should be thankful. I do think about the youngsters who watch your videos, though ... just food for thought.)

      If the youngsters who watch these videos are old enough to understand the innuendos, then they are old enough to hear them. And for those that aren't old enough to understand them, well it doesn't matter, because they don't understand them anyway.

    "A non-binary set of digits"
    I mean, I guess that's technically correct, if binary refers to 2 and this involves 3 digits. Not how the term is typically used, but I appreciate you trying

    Simon is always good for a laugh. At 40:00 he says he hopes he can show that r2c4 is a B. He has a B in r1c2, then an A in r3c3, then a B in r7c3. What he missed was putting A in that same domino which gives him the B he wants. But instead he goes all around and puts in the B where he wants LAST.

    • @tremkl

      I think that was semi deliberate. He didn’t want to get distracted by doing the maths on row 1, so it made more sense to get all the purples labeled, then use the conclusion he suspected would be the case.

    SPOILER ALERT:
    I thought the 2 heart throuple HAD to have each of the 3 digits in it. I thought the digit in R5C6 HAD to be in R1C5. It wasn't until I watched the solve that it could be in R3C5, as there was nothing in the rules stating the thouple couldn't have a repeated digit.

    Amazing puzzle
    Anyway, 38:04
    Why did you need the letters?
    Couldn't you use the "grays" again?
    A purple-gray cell is different from a red-gray cell

    • @AlRoderick
      @AlRoderick 2 года назад +1

      It's better from the software's perspective, because colors are treated like an "OR", so double-clicking a red-light gray cell would get all the light grays, including the purple ones. Letters are tighty defined. The reason letters are in the software inn the first place is that sometimes colors are doing too many jobs.
