Thirty Seconds to Mars was the first band to shoot a video in China. Shannon on drums is Jared's brother. You know I'm here for more 30stm reactions. If it says directed by Bartholomew Cubbins, it's Jared. I'm also here for more eyeliner lol.
Every time I hear Thirty Seconds to Mars, I think of you ❤️ His reaction is my reaction. I love the video, but still have no fucking clue what is going on!
Let me try to get some meaning into the video and song. Thanks to one tiny information from @Brendan Wickberg I might have an idea how to understand the video and maybe even kind of connect it with the lyrics. The video starts in a China of the past. It's the young emperor's birthday and he is asked what he wishes for his birthday. Till now I never understood what he wished for as the wish had not been subtitled in the video. After I read Brendan Wickberg's comment about the emperor wishing for the "sound of tomorrow" it makes a bit more sense. Because we then cut the the dressing room of 30 Seconds to Mars in the present day. Jared talks about a ?dream? he had about a huge battle and him getting away. He's also the one hearing the talking of the emperor's guards in the dressing room while no one else can hear it. I think he's the connection between the past and the present. They then find this old map, which is, what I believe, the item that takes them back in time (a bit like the magical staff in the Jackie Chan movie "The Forbidden Kingdom" where an American boy gets transported back to old China by said staff). The two slammed doors and the flickering light is most likely the moment when they are transported back in time. Then someone opens the doors from the outside and they find themselves in China in the past and are led in front of the young emperor. When I understand it correctly, then the band is the present for the emperor. They are supposed to play for him, but not only music, but also in a sword fight. When they win, they can return home through the door with the x. Not sure how the text could fit in though.
There is a great documentary from 2012 called Artifacts about how 30STM had to fight their label who was ripping them off. It’s very interesting and enlightening to learn how music labels operate and basically cheat their artists out of a lot of money.
Yeah about style in general, it's up to our own liking. I don't condone someone changing what they like because "majority of people think it's bad or outdated or even cringe". I'm from Japan and visual kei is a big thing since the late 80's, and I still love those styles even today. I don't do it all the time, but it's nice once in a while.
The Director is Bartholomew Cubbins AKA Jared Leto lol Also the meaning is about learning to move on from your past and the key moments that hold you back. Coming to terms with the map that is you so you can navigate ahead in peace.
I must admit that seeing you react to the lyrics of a non rap song makes me really want to see you react to Poets of the Fall. They are such an amazing underrated band.
Not knowing if 30 Sec. said anything in regaurds to this video, but i always assumed that the video tied into the map of the world written on your face, and how history is written on the landscape. How the history of a person is on their face and the history of a place is written on the walls. The fact they filmed in The Forbidden City and the history of the place and searching for the heart of a place or person by shifting through their yesterday. I could be very wrong... but, figured id throw my 2 cents. Love the videos! Keep it up!! :)
I feel you TheThirdEarnest. As a 30STM fan this music video has always been one of my favorites but also super perplexing. You should definitely react to more of their stuff. In the video each band member is split off from the others and they seem to encounter and face their own fears. Later they come back masked and all have to fight each other to get to their destination. Consider it a trail (gift) that is given to them.
(about the confusing video) vikipedia says: "The video can be seen as a tribute to the film since several of the scenes and characters are directly inspired by the film".
People talk shit about "emo"... but this is UNDENIABLY a good song by any standards of rock music. And I'm too old to be admitting that... 🤣 But its the truth.
All 30STM music videos are mini movies. Someone commented here wondering what it'd be like to be in Jared's brain. Like that movie, Being John Malcovich probably. Crazy bizarre. I'd be interested in your take on Hurricane (if you can find the uncensored version), Kings and Queens, and City of Angels. Glad you were able to still pull meanings and thoughts out of this even not understanding the video. I didn't understand the first time either.
Saw 30STM a couple times . I remember specifically the concert at Carthage College here in Wisconsin . That shit was like a cd as far as music and his voice . Pure talent bro , PURE…FUCKING…TALENT 🤙🏽😎
What I got out of it is that they had to face all their sins or battles within themselves and then face each other in battle. Like for instance the guy whipping himself, maybe that band member dealt with physical pain he would inflict on himself or that he punishes his self for things. Or like when Shannon sees the man with the lady being coddled. Like maybe Shannon has a problem letting go of his mother.
Glad I wasn't the only one who was lost with this video! Lol. Beautifully shot for sure. So much eye liner in this video! 😁 Jared's voice is amazing. For another video show casing his amazing vocals, check out him on BBC Radio One covering Rihanna's Stay. It's stripped down, acoustic, and raw. The opposite of this, and it's amazing!
Jared directs all his music videos and they are ALL crazy (down a rabbit hole for sure) but I love them. I believe all that you see is his creativity coming through. Jessica below dissected it pretty good. Not much more to offer.
My own takeaways, it's a bit of Jared's ego coming through. The boy emperor asks for "The sound of tomorrow" not "A sound", that turns out to be 30STM. Through mystic forces the band is brought to the past as they are the gift to emperor's birthday wish. Their time spent in the past they get to witness some strange rituals and practices of the era. Although a lot of anachronistic stuff happens not historically accurate for time period, it's a representation of stuff that did happen through the different dynasties.
Someone needs to tell him about Josh A and Iamjakehill I want to see his reactions to them just any song would be fine maybe Gucci Coffin or something I don't know
I think the singer Similar to 3 doors down And also citizen soldier Cause remember usually when you look at some of the band members from different bands I think this singer is actually from these 2 bands by just mentioned
Great reaction! I felt same but the video finally explained to me this way, & pretty neat: Short version kid asking to see himself grow up. Long version: Emperor calling 30 Seconds to Mars to enter all experiences, up to x marks the spot, that rightly belong to the child emperor so they then may reflect them on their faces as they sing for his birthday of the very wrinkles that are forming on his face as he grows for who but the emperor ought so precisely provide the map of the world? hahah ha that was pretty fun, highlights for me included "Where you going girl" and "I thought that was a sushi roll".
Ernest asking the real questions. "What would it feel like to be chopped in half?" LOL. Also, the whole time I was confused as well. Kept waiting for something to show up at the end but whatever, song was dope.
The way they shot this video and "a beautiful lie" which is a different story (not Chinese), is done it a way "similar" in how Fallout Boy recorded their videos for their "Save Rock and Roll" album. Not exactly the same because Fallout Boy had a story that unraveled from the first to the next (like chapters of a book) but in a similar style.
just an idea.... I've never think of this earlier but... any connection between a beautiful lie (cus damn there must be a reason why this vid ends the same as the other one starts, not sure its cust because it follows on the album) and also these kinda creepy looks/imagines - does it link to the kill??? dunno
Jared writes the lyrics while he’s filming Alexander so probably about Alexander but he loves to confused people like that. You can’t truly understand his ‘film’ but you just keep watching because it’s so beautiful and artificially pleasing. Also he’s the director, he used another names when it came to directing but that’s him, always grand and powerful.
I’m sure another music video took over it in the following years BUT at the time when it was filmed this was the most expensive music video Ever shot...
Their were 3 edits of the video. This one was the 14 minute full version, a 5 minute edit, and a 3 minute edited version from what I read (may be paraphrasing here.) I read their was a Chris lord alge mixed version of the song (sadly can’t find it on RUclips.)
I think they just wanted to put out a song and wanted to make a cool video. They don't seem to fit entirely together, but it's beautiful shots and an interesting story sprinkled with music, or it's music interjected by amazing visuals. Either way you look at it, feels a bit like a 2 in 1. The Album version logically is barely 1/3rd the length.

@@hashtaggerri aww so sweet!!! This video is a little movie. Jared loves to make their videos in to movies.

All of the 30 seconds to Mars tracks bang

I think NF's line fits most of 30STM videos: "I don't know if I'm making movies or music videos".
Lol yesss
Exactly what I heard in my head watching 30STM today! lol
👍🏼Definitely an appropriate quote for 30STM videos & to a lesser degree NF videos. Love some NF & 30STM!
"I have no idea what's going on in this video"---- said 20 times by Ernest

YOU NEED TO REVIEW THE UNCENSORED VERSION OF HURRICANE!!!! Jared has such an amazing way with his music videos I love them so much
This
If he don’t get this video, he really won’t get hurricane
I dont understand what this guy and his band are doing here for your females, who seem to be showing major support.
More 30STM content please! Kings & Queens, A Beautiful Lie, Closer to the Edge, so many more
This is still the best music video of the past 20 or so years, in my humble opinion. Has yet to be topped.
There is a great documentary from 2012 called Artifacts about how 30STM had to fight their label who was ripping them off. It’s very interesting and enlightening to learn how music labels operate and basically cheat their artists out of a lot of money.

At The time, it was reported as the most expensive music video of all time
Every video they shoot has a movie aspect to it and they are great at doing that plus their music is beyond
