The history of Mormonism's founders and early days is highly entertaining, often unbelievable, and always riveting listening! Be well!
They push you through the sessions. No time to pray or meditate. I do not get this guy's point. It's not true. When I went to the temple the only thing I remember is being brainwashed to honor and obey my husband instead of God and to give everything I have to the church. That repeated information over and over the same thing over and over is called indoctrination. They say if you do something 15 times it's stuck in your memory if you do it 30 you can memorize it something like that. I was never able to be by myself, or without many other folks I did not know. So many people in one session it's like going to the movies. You'll never get the opportunity to be by yourself or spend much time in the ceiling room, pray or meditate. Won't happen. I make my home my peace my place for prayer meditation and getting close to God. No other folks or interruptions.You cannot possibly focus on a higher power.. The only thing you do is get indoctrinated. Truth. But remember, you have to pay a price for that membership. Is there a financial price to pay for God's love and acceptance? Paying money for a relationship with God in the temple? It just doesn't sound right to me.
The story of the predator illustrates why abuse continues to be a serious issue in the church. I'm all for having a society that encourages rehabilitation, but that should not come at the cost of putting children in harm's way.
I'm a victim of child SA. Mine happened in my home, not at church. Nevertheless, hearing about this predator potentially being called as a Primary teacher pisses me off. This is exactly why the church needs to implement full background checks for ALL child/youth leadership, worldwide. I'm grateful for the work that the Britvengers did in getting this implemented in the UK; it needs to happen here in the US, too. I also think that there needs to be a way for predators to attend church without endangering children. Maybe each stake could have an adults-only branch/ward? It can be voluntarily attended by single adults (the 30+; there's already YSA wards/branches, after all), empty nesters, etc, and mandatorily attended by those on the sex offender registries. But I know, the church "leadership" will never listen to ideas from a non-believing member like me.
The Methodist church here in Anchorage always does background checks on people who will be working with the youth, and there is never one on one with a youth. The Mormon church should be more like them.

I have mixed feelings about the predator at church. My first thought is nope! But my second thought is that Jesus spent his time with the sinners. People who have done terrible things don't deserve to be shunned forever. But, there's no way to know when they have truly changed. (Note: the power of discernment is not the answer!) The fact that they encouraged the Primary to call him as a teacher: what???! Couldn't he just attend church and then go home? Did he really need a calling?? It is not the church's place to rehabilitate or to test if someone has been rehabilitated!
Sometimes the people who do things so terrible they do deserve to be kept away from the innocent. Has nothing to do with forgiveness…because we humans are not able to discern one’s intentions or heart, we can forgive but not put ourselves and others in danger! The “former” sinner should understand the consequences of their actions, they may last a lifetime. Jesus is safe to be around that person, but Jesus would never want others to be put in potentially dangerous situations. My granddaughter’s grapest was protected and shielded from others in the ward knowing about it. He was in the ward. I was told to keep quiet about him and what he did. Told me I could only talk about it with the RS President!
You raise good points. Catholics finally made a “no tolerance” rule that predators could not be in ministry ever. Also with online church, this person doesn’t have to attend in the building. Seems like someone in the bishopric could also minister to him at home occasionally so he has some human contact w/o putting church goers at risk.
The Godhead doesn't makes sense to me from any perspective. The Trinity version, where is one God in three people... what? That doesn't make sense! The Mormon version where they are three guys with a common purpose, like a presidency, makes sense until you find out that one is God, one is his son, a God in training, and one is a ghost... also a God in training! So we've got two trainees who we need to listen to the same way that we need to listen to the big boss. Ok... but what if the trainees goof? What if the HG tells us where our keys are instead of warning us to stay away from a molester? Does he get reprimanded and we pay the consequences? ?
So sorry about this mum passing. She deserved better and longer care in hospital.
