I’m in the same area! And recently planted two about the same height! I’ve been watering three times a week with the hose until there is a little standing water around them in the morning! Just trying to figure out a good schedule, one of them looks like it’s maybe turning a little yellow brown at the top!!

Great information yet again Jim! I absolutely love Italian Cypress, and I have a total of 6 in my yard here in Salt Lake City, Utah (7b) and they do absolutely amazing here in the dry desert. They have taken down to 5 F with out even skipping a beat. And they actually do really good in ultra alkaline soils (8 -8.5 PH). They’re literally planted every 1000 feet in southern Utah lol, very very common.

@HortTube with Jim Putnam Hi, thanks for sharing your expertise. I live in California, and I have 4 Italian Cypress trees all about 5 years old. One of my trees is turning brown on the top of the tree and the brown/dryness is working itself downward. How can I help save the Italian Cypress tree? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you very much.

The soil here tends to not drain very well, anytime there's rain, there's floods and flash floods because the water doesn't soak into the ground.

Thank you for sharing this information. What about the wind... I think they are not wind lovers, correct? I was living in Germany and I spent time getting to know them. I notice the soil is red sand and drainage, as you said. Also, they like to be with other Italian Cypress in a row. I am now in zone 8b Mount Vernon VA. My plan is to replace clay for sand, but I don't know how deep to go😬 Also, I will make sure to include drain holes. To be honest, I don't know if it will work....I am planning to do the same for Lavender. I wanted to plant them in the walkway in front of the house. What do you recommend?

We are in SE VA and planted nine Italian Cypresses last April (seven in the ground and two in large pots). They did great through the spring, summer and fall but the deep freeze of January was too much and they all received varying degrees of winter damage. The trees are still alive and have significant top growth so we are confidant they were not diseased and had good conditions otherwise. We would like to try again but are wondering if we should plant now or wait until the fall.

Just came across your video, I recently planted some Italian blue cypress trees in the backyard and I’m out in Southern California! About two weeks ago I’m trying to figure out the watering schedule on these guys! I’ve been doing it about 2 to 3 times a week and giving them a deep watering One of them, it’s starting to turn a little yellow brown at the top and the second one is kind of doing the same. I’m wondering if I’m over watering or under watering?!

I have a cypress number 14 trees purchased from a nursery a year and a half ago and lengths ranging from one to one and a half meters and planted in the ground
At that time the growth was fast upward while the trunks on the stem were slow
Its height is now about 4. Meters to 3 meters
But the problem we are facing now is the appearance of yellowing in the trunks on the leg with the appearance of spray on it from the bottom of the tree to the middle of the leg, while from the middle of the leg to the top is still green.
The tree also began to bend towards the ground
Knowing that I have used insecticides and fungi to combat this disease, but it is useless
I hope you answer before yellowing reaches the top of the tree and die

I have 2 Italian Cypress by my entry to front door. One each side, they are about 13feet tall. They were doing beautifully. Then last week the neighbors 60foot tree fell on my house and part of it was resting on them. They are bent now, the tops look great but the trees are bent and some of the leaves or arms were sheared off. The trunks were not damaged at all. Still very solid. Does anyone think they can be straightened and fixed? I am in Central Florida. The tree guys that took the fallen one away said it would be no problem. Just wondering what you all think...I should do...

My Italian Cypress was doing well until I took out a lawn near it. I believe much of its roots had spread under the lawn and gotten water from the water for the lawn. For 6 or 7 years, that's almost all the water it got. I never watered it directly. I have watered it a lot since, but it has done poorly. I have read that Italian Cypress can easily be watered too much and get root rot. If the symptoms of being watered too little and too much are the same, how do I tell? I live in Las Vegas. I haven't given them any water in several weeks. Can I assume that if they had root rot, it's gone? If I water them once per week, will root rot go away?

I’ve killed around 6 of these in the past three years. I had one hang on from early January until last week I came home and it’s turning brown real bad so it won’t be long. I love these and trying to get them to grow around north central North Carolina. I told a neighbor a month ago that maybe I should dig a big area and mix sand with the soil. Do you think that might work? Didn’t help that we’ve had 20 feet of rain this year since I planted them. I’m guessing I’ll never get one to grow in the ground since you don’t see them in my region. I love how they don’t take up so much room in the yard. Thinking of giving up and try emerald green arbitovae but they aren’t unique. There’re quite a few around my area.

Jim, I have some Italian Cypress that I started in large pots a few years before putting them in the ground last year. The years they were in pots they didn't get as much sun as they should have so the bottom (first 3 feet or so) are very bare.Is there any way to force growth from the bare spots (by scoring the trunk etc) or will they eventually grow out at the bottom because they look less than appealing considering they are statement pieces in my front yard?Or am I going to have to teansplant them with some new ones?
    Love tge videos.Best of luck!

It’s a Greek cypress! :-) For those concerned about their cold hardiness adult trees have survived -18 degrees Celsius, again and again in northern Greece but anything below that is kind of a high risk gamble.

    • @markkimba74

They grow on mountains in Greece which get covered in snow

    • @orpheasnestos7444
      @orpheasnestos7444 3 года назад

@@markkimba74 No, they actually grow mostly in the coastal areas and valleys where the climate is milder and more mediterranean. The temperature in Greece’s mountains especially in the north drops to way lower than-18 degrees Celsius so they can’t survive there.

@@orpheasnestos7444 they do grow mostly in coastal areas but many coastal areas elevate rapidly and have snow/frost on them, I dont think they will survive below -18 but they survive through UK winters as I have quite a few of them growing in the UK which were grown from seeds collected whilst in Greece.

our two trees have been producing a lot of seeds and whilst we have been growing them in the past year, the side branches keeping sagging to the sides, so we have to tie it fully with garden twine. How do we get them to grow straight up and what do we do about the seeds? They are starting to look untidy, unless we continuously have them tied up. Our neighbour ha one and it is growing beautifully. I hope you can help.

I just planted one of these yesterday for one of my customers. I am in the Northeast in Connecticut. I planted it where there was a Hinoiki Cypress that I had cut down at His request that had been there for many years that had died. My customer who is a tree lover decided to replace it with an Italian Cypress. What do you think it's chances are Jim ? I ask this because you said these mainly thrive in warm climates like the Southeast, Pacific West and the Mediterranean

By the way this specie is the "Cupressus Sempervirens" right?
