I am now in my late 70s and read this poem for the first since schooldays. I was embarrassed when I shed a tear or two, and so I was pleased to find this video where the reader shares his emotions too. Unpretentious and very moving. Thank you Mattie. ❤
That's very kind of you to say, Patricia. I'm so glad to find someone who shares a similar emotional connection to this beautiful poem. I'm very happy you enjoyed my reading
This is the poem that pushed my to start this channel in the first place. Wonderful stuff. I've lost count of the 'ruined' takes where tears forced me to stop recording and start again. Then I finally realized that I could just leave them in. They were honest tears, and the poem deserved them.
This was my and my sister's favorite poem that my Grandmother used to read to us when we were children. Written the same year my Grandfather was born. Had to listen this Halloween weekend. Such a fitting, suspenseful poem.
My second time listening to The Highwayman Mattie and it moved me again - even more than the first time. It’s the raw emotion that pours out of you. Truly stirring. Thank you Mattie.
I watched your performance of “The Highwayman” again. Love it. I was first introduced to this poem many years ago in school by a substitute teacher. Her performance was great also. I fell in love with it then and have read it countless times since then.
I understand completely; I am deeply moved by the poem every time I read it. I'm so glad you enjoyed my reading, and very much appreciate the compliment. Thanks Robert.
This is such a powerful story and one of my absolutely favorites; ( I have so many favorites, ha ha ) Many , many thanks, Have you ever heard Phil Och’s RUclips version - It’s so beautiful and so apparent that he feels the same way about this great poem as you do , Mattie .
It is a wonderful and moving poem indeed. It perfectly captures idealized romantic love, and it gets me every time. My love of this poem was the principal motivation for starting this channel. I learnt how to film, light and edit just so that I could read this poem. And it took me so many takes! Every time I reached the poem's climax, I would break down. I was entirely unable to finish the poem without tears. Finally, I just accepted that tears would have to be a part of my reading. Thank you for introducing me to Phi Ochs, Trish. His version of this poem is truly beautiful.
Thanks Evan, that's very kind of you to say. It's one of my favourites too. In fact, this poem is one of the reasons I started this channel in the first place. A real pleasure to read. Thanks again for watching the video, and for paying me such a great compliment.
Really enjoyed this reading. Refreshing to see your emotion shining through, which is how a narrative poem like this , should affect us when we read it/hear it. I'm teaching this in my English Literature class and I love it. Thanks for taking the time :)
Thanks Stacy, I very much appreciate your comment. This was my first video and many attempts ended up on the cutting room floor. I had some odd notion that I shouldn't get too "caught up" in the reading myself, as that might distract the audience. So I'd start filming, and then give up if I felt the tears approach. Which they always did; it's just such an incredibly moving poem. Finally I gave up and just let the reading take me where it would. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Robert, that's very kind of you to say. I will absolutely read "Maud Muller", and thank you for the suggestion. I'm working on two story requests at the moment, as well as three other poems (two of which are original) so it may take a little bit before I can get to it - but get to it I shall! Thanks again for watching and commenting.
Thanks Crystal. This was my first video. I did so many takes trying (and failing) to keep the emotion under control while I filmed it, because I thought it might be a little distracting for anyone watching if I got too caught up in it. In the end (as you can see) I just gave in, tears be damned. I have to say, I'm glad I did. Especially knowing someone else got a little teary-eyed, too. Thanks for that.
@@MattiesStoryland It had just the right amount of emotion and tears at the end should be a part of it. Thanks so kindly for commenting back and I am enjoying your stories so much.

I cried , too ,,
Another favorite of mine and well read. Love the imagery, the mood, the rhythm, the tight, action-packed story, and the "Waltzing Matilda" type end.

A beautiful reading of one of my favorite poems. Thanks Mattie!
Thanks, TKE. This poem is the main reason I started the channel 🙂 I'm so glad you enjoyed my reading of it.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you, Lynn. One of my favourite poems, and also one of the reasons I decided to start this channel to begin with.

Thanks, Bernie! 😀
I Appreciate You. 💯
I have Always Loved this Poem.
Thank you, Regina. I've always loved this poem, too. Beautiful and tragic, heartbreaking and uplifting.
I first heard this from Phil Ochs the folk singer in the 1960s. It’s slightly paraphrased but still a powerful song.
It is indeed. Thank you for watching and for commenting, TK.

Our fabulous teacher read this a tad slower. But I love it xxx
Wonderful poem, isn't it? I'm glad you had a great teacher to introduce you to it, and very happy that you enjoyed my reading.
Mattie, I could listen to that voice reading anything.
Far too kind, John 😀 Sincere thanks for checking it out.
Perfect! ❤
Thank you, Arden 😀

The only reading I've heard, that comes anywhere close to how well my Grandmother used to read it. Thank you. I really enjoyed listening
High praise indeed, Roman. Thanks again.
Well done. Enjoyed the reading.
Thanks! It was a pleasure to do.
Very moving, gave me goosebumps!!
Thanks. It's such a beautiful poem, isn't it?

Mattie you made me cry.
You are a credit to our grandad, a true Seanchaí
Thanks Marie. You have lifted and humbled me simultaneously 😁
Great performance. The best I’ve heard. Thank you. Please consider reading Maud Muller by John Greenleaf Whittier.

Hi Robert, thanks again for the request. I just put it up on my channel; sorry it took so long!
Wow, that gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes at the end. Very well done!
