    I used to fix those all the time, and raised my family in the repair business. I ought to get and restore a couple myself, just for old time's sake. Maybe one from each decade.. 50's, 60's 70's, 80's. I loved Zeniths above all others! Hand-wire me, baby.

    Man oh man. You must have a high tolerance for just "fuck it, try it" with these things. SO many of those things, I wouldn't even consider plugging in until I've cleared out the dust and crud from the boards. Really surprising to see that Toshiba at the end. LOVE these videos!

    I had a procession of colour TV's in The UK:
    They all had tired CRT's. The red parts of the pictures all exhibited flare at the edges.
    All were 90 degree delta-gun CRT type. A re-gun in any case was more than the sets were worth.
    I was offered a 405 line NTSC colour TV. It was a prototype from when they were considering which colour system to adopt in the UK. I didn't realise what the hell it was at the time (1985) and I turned it down.

    Fantastic, I watch every one of these TV videos, its the exact opposite of how I work on tube electronics and yet if find it quite intriguing. Like Mozart vs. Death Metal. I use a Scalpel you use a Chainsaw. My favorite are the Push and pray moment when you turn the power on. Id be on the isolation transformer, Every electrolytic checked, Variac, 100 watt bulb in between, B+ on the volteter etc etc. Plug it in and duck works too. Them flyback transformers though, they can be scary stuff.

    A treat to come home trashed after a long day and find a long Shango video.
    I don't collect TVs but today I got an old computer monitor for free. It reads *_Radio Shack TRS-80 Video Display_* manufactured December 1977. Looks like it's a modified TV, the case has holes to accomodate a telescopic antenna. It turns on, shows a white screen, bright tube. No idea what could do with it.

    • @PapiDoesIt

      The Radio Shack "trash 80" computer did indeed use a TV (GE I think - I had the actual TV) but without the tuner circuitry.

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 8 лет назад

      Judging from the labels, I think it may be an RCA. It has a DIN connector coming from the front.

    • @PapiDoesIt
      @PapiDoesIt 8 лет назад

      +MisterTalkingMachine you might be right about it being RCA. It's been a long time.

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 8 лет назад

      I just read the labels more carefully, it actually says _RCA Model no. KTR 122S_ in the back.
      Would like to figure out what kind of interface it uses, so maybe I could display something on it with a microcontroller or something.
      If else, guess I could feed a composite signal into it.

    I've got a BK Precision CRT tester I bought new back when having one was the thing. It's the model 490. They really come in handy to verify the CRT condition. If folks only knew the kinda money a tech has in all their test jigs they'd understand why we had to charge so much cause that's how we paid for it. Great videos Sir.

    Shango066 that comment at the end about the porno made my day Lol also I just got done restoring a Emerson with the identical chassis as the one in your video (I have a video on my channel of mine) the plastic parts are super brittle including the plastic that holds the Slugs in the coils. even though it is High hour it still makes a okay picture I completely restored it. if you decide to try and get yours working let me know and I can send you the Sams in a PDF file for it, it's super hard to find being it's not a common chassis.

    • @shango066
      @shango066  8 лет назад +3

      Cool, whats the sams number? I have most of the set in filing cabinets. I thought I fired that one up and it kinda worked, maybe it had bad caps or im sure it does

    • @Jtechmodern
      @Jtechmodern 8 лет назад +3

      +shango066 it's sams 702-1 your's is just the tabletop version of my console model, I believe it's the same sams it covers several different models and looks to be the same chassis :) I remember in your video it already had a new horizontal phase detector which is a plus, if you do make a video on that set it could definitely be interesting! I found out mine from the factory came with a cap that did not match the schematic in the I.F/AGC section it was supposed to be a .01 but instead was a .47 and you could tell it was original so I don't know how it even worked when the set was new, when I got it restored it was throwing off the horizontal sync till I changed it to the .01 the schematic listed, I also talked to other TV collectors and I guess it's not uncommon for Emerson to put wrong caps or underrated values in their sets,would definitely be a good set for a resurrection video!. if you find out you don't have the Sam's let me know and I'll email it to you, I had to pay $22 for a "digital copy" of the sam's from there website which was a rip-off really for just a schematic and is probably worth more than the entire set, so if you find out you need it I'll just send a copy of the pdf file so you don't have to pay there ridiculous prices as well! by the way your videos are great! being completely honest it's more entertaining than cable/pay TV I probably watched close to all of your videos.

    Would there be a place that sells CRT / Tube testers anywhere anymore? If I have to go to eBay that's fine as well, but even though I've only got some 8 tubes I got out of a Zenith radio (a double diode, two pentodes, a triode, an unknown small tube missing some pins, and one with a plate cap?) that I don't know if they're in functional order.
    I don't really want to do this for a job per se, rather as a hobby because I always thought tubes were cool, and when I finally got into electronics, tubes were all but gone (ca. 1980).

      It applies a bit more voltage than normal to the heater & then when you press the button it dumps a charged capacitor across the grid-cathode connection, this burns off some of the emissive material off the cathode to expose a fresh layer.

    • @bobweiss8682
      @bobweiss8682 8 лет назад +4

      Cutoff is a measurement of how well the control grid (G1) is able to control the electron beam current flowing from the cathode. Specifically, the cutoff voltage is the grid voltage that just "pinches off" the beam current. If the G1 aperture in the gun is eroded, the cutoff point will shift dramatically.
      On that CRT tester, you are supposed to adjust the grid bias to set the meter to a specific point before measuring the emission.
