When an umpire pays a free kick for the ball not being directly handed back to them 1 second earlier and has the ball in their hands, when blowing the whistle, the AFL has a rule all would be pleased to see changed asap.

The fact that one of our prime movers is not at his best - Papley and we are still missing Callum Mills tells me that there is enough upside within the team without calling the depth from the VFL. Once Mills comes back, Heeney will start drifting forward to shake the tag and will be used for impact in the middle. Adams McInerney, Gulden, Papley, Florent Parker can all go in the stoppages and centre so no worries from that point of view.
I guess the only worry for me is not the midfield but the one constant player that is at the centre right from the beginning - Brodie Grundy. Not sure how it will go if he loses form or gets injured.

There's really not much to argue about the Sullivan decision. The clock had stopped, so there was no 'time wasting', and there is no tactic to give Collingwood time to set up behind the ball because it was ALREADY in freo's forward 50 and everyone was already in position so it would not have made that much of a difference. As much as it might have been the right call and the whole 'rules is rules', but all i ask is consistency. Does every player get 2 or 3 warnings to hand the ball back before penalised or is it immediate consequences if the first person to touch the ball isn't the umpire?

Sydney look a different thing now. A few teams have had the jump on us early in matches. What set us aside from the rest is our ability to change and adapt to what the opposition is doing. I haven’t seen a team that can do that and still work it out to get the win. It may catch up sooner or later, but it’ll take a mammoth team to beat these Swans. And it’s not the same team that lost to Richmond. Since that game, swans have been almost untouchable

Kingy doesnt understand the difference between interpreting a rule and discretion in applying a rule. How hard is it to hand the ball back to the ump FFS. 9-year-old kids understand the rule. There is NO discretion for an umpire not to apply a rule. To make it even worse this breach of the rule involved the umpire. The rule is clear. It must be applied.

    • @kossend1
      @kossend1 4 месяца назад

Exactly, and the AFL even issued a memo about that rule before last years finals.
      40:23 "Another interpretation" King says.
An interpretation is something like whether a player had prior (interpretation in the heat of the moment), whether there was insufficient intent to keep a ball in, or whether a comment/gesture is dissent or not.
In this case the rule is simple - give the ball directly to the umpire. You can't argue that he didn't break that rule, so at that point it's not an interpretation. It's black and white application of the law.

@@jaredburgess8381 you cant just state things that are factually and objectively untrue then say “simple” and it’s magically true. If st Kilda made the 8 Ratten still would’ve been sacked. Nice guy but clearly incompetent.
Irrespective of what you think about the treatment of Ratten or Ross’ performance Gerald’s comments are materially misstating words that were written in a report. That is misinformation 101 and it is defamatory.

Um yes they did. Their incredibly delusional President Andrew Basset literally said something on the lines of "we think our list is a capable of much better things" during Ross Lyon's first press conference after they announced him as Coach. That exact same incredibly delusional President towards the end of last season went on the Saints Podcast and once and again talked up the list. Maybe do your research properly.
How exactly was Ratten incompetent. It was under him they actually won a Final and pretty damm comfortably too against a long time rival the Bulldogs in his first season as Coach. It was under him Max King quite clearly played his best footy and it was under him they actually attacked the footy. Sure they were pretty poor defensively but quite frankly most middling teams are naturally bound to be with the type of footy that is largely required in the modern game.

@@taliamason7986 I don’t care about what the club or president has said or anything else in regard to this issue. All that matters is that Gerald (knowingly or unknowingly knowingly) lied about a statement of fact, he spread misinformation. We see this all the time in political reporting, and it’s beginning to seep into AFL media (see also the “north are debt free” narrative pushed by so many recently which is also incredibly factually untrue). We need to stamp this out and hold journalists to a higher account.

I see no reason why Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon or Melbourne couldn't knock Sydney off if they play them in Melbourne.

Irrelevant. Tigers also rolled the Swans in round 3. Doesn’t mean they could do it again.
The comp is pretty close at the minute, what happen 2 months ago is irrelevant to now. It’s at the point where if any team is a bit off they could go down to “lesser” teams quite easily. Look at the Eagles smacking the Dee’s.
Or the Hawks nearly rolling port.

Collingwood were a month behind in their preparation - Brisbane & Collingwood players started pre-season training later than the other clubs after playing in the GF last october.
      - beaten by a half strength Sydney team tells the story.
      Saints beat Collingwood too.
Haven't lost since - despite injuries.
Season is a marathon not a sprint - you build up conditioning to peak in finals.
As David King said - watch out if you peak too soon - and will Heeney burn out?
      - you also need luck with injuries...Pies not having much luck at the moment -who knows?
