I remember a cartoon. When I was in the NAV. Posted outside the captain office. It was a 747 landing on an aircraft carrier. It came to stop at the forward cat area, the mast was knocked off the ship and one of the wings. And the pilot, caption read. " I told you I could do it!"
As an owner of a 310C, I am far too familiar with the prop AD in question. There are a few prop shops that can do the work, you just have to expand the geographic boundaries of your search. Although not cheap, it will be far less expensive than new props. BTW, that AD is pure BS, but there it is. There is a firm in FL that can rebuild the boost pump at a reasonable price, don't remember their name offhand. If not too corroded from mouse droppings, I know you would find the 310 to be much more fun to fly then the Azwreck, although more challenging to master. It will be faster and much more responsive, but can get away from an inexperienced, or briefly inattentive, pilot in about half a heartbeat. By comparison, the Aztec pretty much just plods along with mushy controls. Good luck with both.
@@therealjimmysworld Check with Werner Propeller in Tucson, AZ, always had good response from them. Also, there is a long established prop shop in or near Minneapolis, MN that is well versed in older Hartzell props. I'm not sure of the name, but it may be Alexander. BTW, pull the aft scowling inspection plates and pull the exhaust augmented tubes to check the rear wing spars for corrosion on the 310 before you go too far with the plane.
You don't need an aircraft to be in annual or even have an air worthiness cert. if you're using it to fly "pharmaceuticals" from Latin America to the USA. Just one trip alone would pay for the proper repairs.
This stuff is heaps of fun, you're a great loon of a presenter, but it's also really fascinating seeing how you've gone about evaluating your finds and now getting into the real business of getting them airworthy, if possible. Glad I came across your channel!
That straight tail 310 is a bit of a rare beast, you could restore it and paint it to represent a U-3 in service with the US military then fly it on the warbird circuit...
Corrosion can be a real headache. Will continue to follow your thread with interest. It has been a long time (1970's) since I flew a 1956 Cessna 310. The prop issue is a tough one as is the damage done by the mouse factory. Wiring looks rough but anything that old needs new wiring anyway. Yes, airplanes convert money to noise. Twins do it twice as fast....Looks like the Aztec is better than expected. Since you have the "Six" you are familiar with the IO-540 Lycoming.
If you make a good offer, like 5k or something, they might do the prop inspection. Money moves. Patreon could work, offer some behind the scenes or a live stream on there.
Scrap the 310, its a bottomless moneypit. I worked in a shop where we tried to talk somebody out of restoring a same vintage 310. He said fix it. One year and $200,000.00 later he had a 310 that was airworthy and worth about $50,000.00! Good luck.
Man, I'm glad you posted this... I was afraid she'd done away with you! Forget the 310. Yeah, it's lot more sexy than the Aztec but that Aztec will fly with anything you can close the doors on... and it will haul some ice. I was bringing one back (non-turbo) from the auction at Cape Girardeau many years ago and picked up a load of ice over what passes for the mountains out there. She never blinked... unlike me. Took about a day and a half (OK, probably 20 minutes on a real clock) before ATC could get me lower. All-in-all a good airplane to get your ME and fly your family around in.
Well Jimmy, I agree the Aztec is worth it. But the 310 is saveable too! I actually like it better than the Aztec. I would consider going ahead with it. Maybe restore it to a point where it can be sold.
So.... The Aztec, stood outside for decades, is rescueable, and the 310, stored inside protected, with practically new(ish.....) engines is a fail, because of two damn propellers? that's.... that's a rollercoaster...:(
@@fhturner3 Unfortunately, it's simply "because the FAA said so". There's an Airworthyness Directive (that's the "AD") on those things, meaning that there had been some kind of safety concern with them in the past, and they require special treatment that has to be signed off, for the plane to remain airworthy. Kind of ironic that the mouse poop isn't even the biggest deal on that plane -- it's bureaucracy. (but for a good reason, like, your plane not falling out of the sky)
I have to admit, the 310 is the more beautiful aircraft. I guess you have to look at it from a money standpoint unless your life's dream is to have a Cessna 310 and you don't care what it costs. I did that with my last big boat. I lost some money for sure. But I had it for 17 years and when I got her done, boy was she a beauty. Personally, I'd love to see the 310 get back into the air.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but restoring both will provide your channel with a lot of good content for months (even a year or so). What is that worth to you at your current and projected future subscriber count? Love your channel. I'm curious to see what you do.
My buddy bought a T-28 Trojan for only around 15k because missing log books at a estate sale couple years ago, shortly after he climbed in and found all the book's under the seat. or at least that's his story but I'm sure if someone's resourceful and has some of the log books to look over I'm sure someone can fill in the blanks lol
It's crazy that the 310 isn't worth more in flyable condition! It seems like a nice-looking plane, there seem to be lots of "Sky King" fans who have a soft spot for them, and as you said, there are only like 6 in flyable condition anymore... but it's still only worth $50K? Huh.
Great Airplanes you have Jimmy The 310 is a great Airplane. I'm a A&P and a pilot. Would love to help you but I'm working in Africa on Beach king airs 300 . I enjoy watching your videos.
I was a USAF Security Police Security Specialist stationed at RAF Upper Heyford UK during the shut down, and went to work in Law Enforcement after our mission went away. While working LE, I had the opportunity to work over at RAF Bicester, and watched the RAF glider club take off & land there. They launched via winch attached to the bed of a Bedford truck, that pulled them aloft, then they'd drop the cable nearly over the truck.
I've been looking at the Aztec market, and it's a pricey one, but a healthy market. The aircraft themselves are greatly loved by their owners for its comfort and space. Nice big windows for great views, and it's an excellent IFR platform. There really isn't a modern equivalent. Is it impossible to store the 310 until such time as the Piper is sold on? I wouldn't advise you to fly it yourself, as I'm afraid that once you have, you won't want to let go. One thought is that agencies, like the FAA, don't want the hassle of dealing with older aircraft. They're happy putting up all kinds of roadblocks to restoration. It's much easier for them dealing with new aircraft.
A&P/IA here. I used to maintain an Aztec. Pretty sure there is a 5 year prop AD on Aztec Props….basically disassemble, inspect for corrosion, reseal, reassemble. Btw….that was a 2400 hour airframe in Primo condition and the owner had to give the thing away. No market for twins with $5 fuel and 36 gph fuel burn. Clear Prop x2
For the 310 magnetos, Check the TCDS, note 13 for eligible magnetos. You can install slick 6310s and others. Education costs money. You can fix the 310 for less than my daughter spent at Columbia. (and she still needs a pilot certificate). Are the engines -Bs or -Ms. Easier to find -M props. Crankshaft dampeners are different. Maybe the crankshafts as well. It sure is hard to believe the Aztruck is more economically viable than the 310.
That's a shame on the 310, I really thought that would be the better candidate. It would be a good project for somebody that really wants to fly it and own it, but it wouldn't be cost effective if somebody was planning on rebuilding it to sell. Would still love to see it in the air and not a scrap yard.
If an A&P had the money to buy the parts then he could do all the work himself and save a ton on labor. Many pilots of older twins actually to earn a degree as An A&P and save a ton on repairs and inspections. They also have the philosophy of most shops won't do as thorough job since its not their ass in the air while an owner/mechanic who flys his own aircraft will take extra time and a lot more TLC in maintaining it.
Those magnetos only need a IRAN & AD check. Should only need minor parts if any & 1 hour labor each. Or send them to a mag shop for 500 hour inspection which cost $350 each. Call Tropic Air Power or Maxwell's magneto shop for the inspections.
That 310 is a terrible idea... so when is the save the 310 merch dropping? Would definitely support this project. One of the only channels I come back to everyday to look for a new video.
Damn Jimmy, I would have washed them before stuffing them in the hangar with other planes! What if you have now brought field mice into the hangar? I, for one, would not be happy, having them moving into my plane!
Cut bait and weigh anchor on the Cessna 310. It is a cool aircraft but old and not feasible to service ($$$$). Friend of mine had and right engine fire while taxing in his 310 A model. You will need to loose (sell) many t-shirts to fund this project. And in the end you will still loose your shirt. Great energy in your channel, enjoy watching you become broke. :)
A little commentary based on experience: The non turbo aircraft exhaust systems are fixed on one end only - the end that bolts to the exhaust port on the engine; the rest of a non-turbo system is unsupported. That allows the entire exhaust to freely expand and contract as it goes from cold to hot - very hot. Your turbo Aztec exhaust tubes are fixed on both ends - one at the engine, one at the turbo. This means they must have slip joints in them, otherwise when they get red hot and expand, they will tend to deform or crack. Most people never take these apart and lube them because it is a royal PITA but it is required every 200 hours, I believe, and IT NEEDS TO BE DONE. Folks bitch about turbos not being reliable or worth it, but they do not have good temp monitors nor are they doing the proper maintenance. When I bought my Aztec, the joints were frozen solid, and sure enough there was about a 10" exhaust crack spewing hot exhaust all over the bottom of the engine and the throttle/governor cables. (This was missed, by the way, by a shop in NC, who dutifully drilled the pipe 2" away from the crack to install a TIT thermocouple. That was the least of their misses; another resulted in a top overhaul.) To get those pipes apart I had to heat the outer pipe cherry red with an oxyacetylene torch (rosebud tip) and then dip the other part in liquid nitrogen before putting it in my vise and twisting hell out of it. Man were they stuck! Then clean up with emery cloth and lube with nickel-based exhaust lubricant. You can get that on Amazon, of all places. www.amazon.com/Permatex-77124-Nickel-Anti-Seize-Lubricant/dp/B0002UENJ2/ Enjoy. Believe me, I've made all the mistakes, so I'll look in from time to time on your Aztec project.
If the "Save the 310" t-shirts and Patreon don't work out, I'd try to sell the 310 to someone that would like to restore it, despite the costs. If no one wants it by the time the Aztek is in the sky again, you may have to part it out or scrap it. I'd love to see both airplanes fly again!
Well Jimmy guess you will be living in the camper until the FAA clears the Aztek for take off. Don't bother with the 310 it is too much of a money pit. Scrap it and put all of your time into the other plane.
Just checking - I know Jimmy wants some speed and although the Piper is called the 'Aztruck' it still has a cruise of what, 150k/175mph? Vs. the 310's 178k / 205 mph? Is that 30 MPH worth another (north of) $60K? That's a tough one (and I was one those rahrah-ing for the 310). ETA >> those numbers are probably all over the place, maybe someone has the relevant ones for these particular planes?
The 310 would only be worthwhile if kept 10 years and used in a business. However,in the bottom line country it will end up in the junkyard with all the other antiques. It's only worth it when the last A6 exists and a million plus will give the only piece of history flying. Keep up the good work Jimmy, some are not destined for beer cans.
From a 310 guy and I hate to say it, but the move to make would be to sell/scrap as much as you can on the 310 and then put it towards the Aztruck. However if you do try to raise funds to save it then I'm in!
As a personal preference, fix the Aztec. I rode in one in 1976 and it felt safe, solid and just right. A few years later, a 310 ambushed its pilot with a roll after take-off in a warm climate and no one lived. As a kid, I was smitten by the 310 for its style. The Aztec then and still does look downright ugly by comparison.
@@therealjimmysworld Agreed! That 310 has some absolutely stunning lines and curves. And not to mention that exhaust. But I have always been a Cessna man. Aztrucks are good for work, and can haul a lot, but they are just so darn ugly…… :)
My take is that refurbing the avionics (maybe not the autopilot?) will be the same cost regardless of the plane. I owned a 310Q with 3 bladed props and fortunately didn't have to do anything with them as they had been overhauled when I got the plane. I wonder what the cost would be to ditch the existing props and replace them with ones that could be overhauled and had no expensive AD's? Do other prop options exist as that seems to be the deal breaker?
Great videos, you're a way braver man than I. Been flying 20+ years mostly professionally. I'd love to dive into crazy projects like this, but am too scared. That looked like Seminole Lake Gliderport, got my glider rating there a long time ago, soaring is super fun. Looking forward to your adventures with these airplanes.
Hay Jimmy, Heres an idea :) Donate the 310 to an aviation school, and use the donation as a tax wright off :) I did that when I crashed my crop duster, between that and the ins. check I came out almost even. You can do it with the Beechcraft also, students would love to get their hands on them to learn on.
A possible source is MT Propellers at Canadian Propellor service in Winnipeg Saskatchewan. Seems to be the go to folks for props. In Canada too which means you get 20% dollar exchange. If swapping props anyways what about reversing scimitars?

I had a friend that had a Beech18, and one year he decided to sell it, and buy a 310. He loved flying the 310, but even compared to the Beech18, it was a major maintenance hog. The 310 kinda falls into the same catagory as certain vintage cars: you have to REALLY like one, to dump money into it and keep it pristine, because you'll never be able to get your money back if you sell it.

Thanks for the comment. Do you have the name or contact info for any of those prop shops? Thanks so much
@@therealjimmysworld Check with Werner Propeller in Tucson, AZ, always had good response from them.
Kudos to you Jimmy for giving the homeless A&P another chance to get his career going again.
Love watching Jimmy's video. It shows you can always have more airplane than money. This guy should be on a comedy show.
You don't need an aircraft to be in annual or even have an air worthiness cert. if you're using it to fly "pharmaceuticals" from Latin America to the USA. Just one trip alone would pay for the proper repairs.
Its that lure of easy money its got a very strong appeal..
@@roguedalek900 as a kid we used to watch the drug planes do touch an go's around here. Good fun.
This stuff is heaps of fun, you're a great loon of a presenter, but it's also really fascinating seeing how you've gone about evaluating your finds and now getting into the real business of getting them airworthy, if possible. Glad I came across your channel!
I’m kind of a sentimental aircraft guy but if you can get this aircraft flying again I want to see it. Go for it!!!
That straight tail 310 is a bit of a rare beast, you could restore it and paint it to represent a U-3 in service with the US military then fly it on the warbird circuit...
Work on the Aztec and set up a fundraiser for the 310. There are enough nutty old plane fans out there to give you $5 to save it from the scrapyard 😊
So....
The Aztec, stood outside for decades, is rescueable, and the 310, stored inside protected, with practically new(ish.....) engines is a fail, because of two damn propellers?
that's.... that's a rollercoaster...:(
And THAT is why engineers are the worst. Someone designed those props and simply failed.
I still don’t quite understand why new props are garbage and un-workable, requiring $30K replacements!
I'm confused as to why no one wants to inspect/overhaul those props? Were they damaged or horribly unreliable?
@@fhturner3 Unfortunately, it's simply "because the FAA said so". There's an Airworthyness Directive (that's the "AD") on those things, meaning that there had been some kind of safety concern with them in the past, and they require special treatment that has to be signed off, for the plane to remain airworthy.
Kind of ironic that the mouse poop isn't even the biggest deal on that plane -- it's bureaucracy. (but for a good reason, like, your plane not falling out of the sky)
It's super hard to find honest mechanics like this. Especially since even a few small repairs can net them $10,000 - $20,000 easily if they want.
Huh.
Great Airplanes you have Jimmy
The 310 is a great Airplane. I'm a A&P and a pilot. Would love to help you but I'm working in Africa on Beach king airs 300 . I enjoy watching your videos.
Parachute????? I love you dude. 22 secs into this video and this man has me in tears. OK. Now i know. Great edit.
Hi, I am from Minn I love to watch your adventures Fixing some of the abandoned airplane and brand it back to life. Keep it up.
I’m no pilot but I love flying and you’re channel! You always make me smile and laugh!
A full on resto on the 310 is going to be right at 150k.. and most of that is going to be avionics. Totally retarded for what aviation cost.
@@Subgunman If you want it done right...
Yeah your right, take them outside and clean them up
Hey I recognize that hanger, Iv actually flown In That piper cub with the floats. He’s a good family friend.
Your phone call at the end to Pastor Jim was so good. Completely cracked me up.
That was the least of their misses; another resulted in a top overhaul.)
To get those pipes apart I had to heat the outer pipe cherry red with an oxyacetylene torch (rosebud tip) and then dip the other part in liquid nitrogen before putting it in my vise and twisting hell out of it. Man were they stuck! Then clean up with emery cloth and lube with nickel-based exhaust lubricant. You can get that on Amazon, of all places.

Enjoy. Believe me, I've made all the mistakes, so I'll look in from time to time on your Aztec project.
Hey: Jimmy Call Mike's Propeller in Bakersfield California , I think they might be able to help on the prop issue.
Donate it to a A&P school
Bummed the 310 seems like it's destined to the scrap pile. But, I am excited to see the Aztec flying again. Good luck and keep up the good work!
Well Jimmy guess you will be living in the camper until the FAA clears the Aztek for take off. Don't bother with the 310 it is too much of a money pit. Scrap it and put all of your time into the other plane.
The 310 needs to be restored just because it's so bad, it's such a cool looking aircraft
Never have I seen a channel grow as fast as this one! Been tracking since vinyl applied to the Six.
Great stuff!
Some of those old flashlights sell for bank on eBay. I’ve seen some sell for $400. Depends upon the brand and model and condition.
There's visible improvement in video quality with every video in this series! Amazing work!
Save the 310! Lets all chip-in!!!! AND AT THE END - A RAFFLE FOR HER!!!!!
Glad to donate (from Australia)....I think you've given us value for money, and I'd like to see the journey continue.
My first flight in a 310g from Dayton to Sun n Fun. Unforgettable ! Save the 310.
Aztec cruises around 160 knots
30K for propellers? Not possible. If Hartzel and McCaully can’t or won’t do it for less, MT might be your answer. Save the 310!
Pastor Jim at the end.... Priceless!
Scrap the 310. Sell it for parts. Money better spent on the Aztec.
Too painful!! #savethe310
@@therealjimmysworld Agreed! That 310 has some absolutely stunning lines and curves. And not to mention that exhaust. But I have always been a Cessna man. Aztrucks are good for work, and can haul a lot, but they are just so darn ugly…… :)
You have a good looking aircraft. It looks good fixing it and putting back together to work again. So nice.
Yes finally Jimmy vídeo. Waiting for you man.
So proud of you !
You're a great and happy man
Congratulations Sir
Have a good luck
Hay Jimmy, Heres an idea :) Donate the 310 to an aviation school, and use the donation as a tax wright off :) I did that when I crashed my crop duster, between that and the ins. check I came out almost even. You can do it with the Beechcraft also, students would love to get their hands on them to learn on.
You can use 🐀💩 as tax write off now?
I love how real he is! Keep killing it mann
A possible source is MT Propellers at Canadian Propellor service in Winnipeg Saskatchewan. Seems to be the go to folks for props. In Canada too which means you get 20% dollar exchange. If swapping props anyways what about reversing scimitars?
After looking at what is needed, the Aztec is the way to go,but, the 310 is also "doable "
The beeping in the glider sounded like the world's worst rave. I would have list min mind. Kudos to you.
Love watching Jimmy's World it's great and sometimes inspiring.
I love the "oh you have a lot of experience buying private jets with other people's money"
Given your proclivity for bad decision making, I'm voting for the 310. You can restore it, then donate it as a write off!
Jimmy hi 👋
I’ve been watching each video it’s awesome to see you progress I’m a big fan
I just wanted to tell you that if one of those 3 planes looks like it’s just a huge pile of cash waiting to be set on fire consider focusing on the airplane with the least amount of problems and get the one that’s easiest air worthy
I can definitely see this taking a year but from personal experience I’d say start with the easiest and least cheap
Good luck Jimmy please take a strategic approach to tackling these aircraft financially
If you start spending money on 3 airplanes at once you’ll find yourself half done with no money left to continue
I’m rooting for you Jimmy
Remember CHEAPEST and EASIEST first
good look man
Jimmy :) you’re such a nice guy
Some additional suggestions
Pick one airplane to start with as far as buying and having work done on the aircraft
