I think the movie is underrated. It can't hold a candle to the book of course, but it is a piece of art seen on its own. The music, the actors, the costumes! Wow!
It's not glorification, it's just showing us a way different culture, one that we didn't know much of. Like it or not, geisha existed, so why not get to know their story? Yes there was love and happy ending in the film but the point wasn't that, it was the life they had to live and the situations they had to face.
Dear John Williams, You are the most awesome musician ever, you are the hero of music. The songs that you compose always fits into the films, like Star Wars, Memoirs of a Geisha, Jurassic Park, E.T and etc.. YOU'RE THE BEST! Best of luck, Leticia.
This was a really beautiful book and movie indeed. Japan is so much more than just anime. The culture is so pure and beautiful. Although to this day this book remains a favorite, I feel like people need to hear Mineko Iwasaki's story out; the real Sayuri. Many people do not see how much this ruined her life, and she deserves to be listened to!
This film always take me to the world of my ilusion. i cant even describe my feelings. It something magical... The colorful and just so beautiful movie :')
As much as I love the soundtrack, it makes me rather sad knowing the truth about this movie. The man who wrote the original book was based off an actual woman who told him to keep it a secret. He misinterpreted many aspects of her story (which made her community angry), sold a book on it, and then a movie was made off it where he got more money. The woman the movie/book was about did not receive a penny and she was bombarded with death threats and her life was ruined.
It was not about a real woman...Arthur Golden originally wrote about a young boy who's mother was a coincidentally a geisha but once he was introduced to the world he decided to write about the mother instead and how her life could have been. There never was a Nitta Sayuri
MsMaritya if it was, then they were not a proper Geisha. Real Geisha during that time did not sell themselves for sex, even in the more "cultured" way that they portray in the book. There was a short period in japanese history during a time of increased political unrest and decreased wealth, that Geisha started selling more sexual favors to keep themselves afloat, but the practice mostly died off after the country returned to stability. That isn't to say that geisha never had sex with a favored customer or became mistresses. It's simply that sex was not what the geisha were selling. They sold company and culture. Many were accomplished scholars and artisans.
He was an immoral guy, but a pretty good writer. Sad. I read another good book about the life of a Geisha... I can't remember the title, but she wrote it after hearing about this book and all the lies. It was very good.
In the last year I have watched this movie at least 6 times. Someone at work lent it to me and when I watched in the first time I immediately bought my own bluray copy on Amazon. The first time I watched it I cried at the end. The sixth time I watched I still cried at the end. Very well written. Best movie of all time
Maestro Williams whom I love seems to use similar motives in most of his compositions, but this one I think is a stand alone unique piece. What sheer brilliance, very lucky to still have him with us, serenading with his glorious tones.
I had the privilege of living in Japan almost 9 years. What an enlightening experience. I read the book and loved it so much I loaned it to everyone I knew read. With no exception everyone said it was the best book they ever read. I think it is time for me to read it again while listening to the soundtrack.
i love this movie too much. I think it's safe to call it a favorite movie of mine, seeing as i've seen it so many times, know it by heart, and love the soundtrack to it. It is such a sweet story, and somehow I loved it even more just because of Sayuri's beautiful, beautiful eyes.
The book was absolutely amazing, and the I think the movie matched it so well. Especially with the lovely art and music that made it be that way. John is a wonderful composer and I will forever love his work.
what i like about Geisha life is that it sort of symbolizes the life's of people who go through so much, just to achieve something, like taking the bad and sorting out to the good. if you want something that's good and happy, what do you do? you FIGHT for it. being a Geisha is hard work, and the process is not easy, learning to walk in kimono, walking in those tall sandal like shoes, painting your face, as if to hide back the real you, the painful hair waxing and sleeping on those weird pillow things (you know what i mean), so your hair can stay in place, etc. but Geisha life shows that everything is not perfect, and sometimes before things get better, they get worse. but how the person handle it and the outcome of it is what defines the person.
When I was reading this book I wasn't know the movie and I watched the movie after I finished the book. I must say the book is very good and the feelings books gave me it's amazing. And the movie is closer to the book but read the book first it's gonna be more charming while you watching the movie :)
As a fan of the book it's a must-see :) Not as good as the book (which is usually the case) but the cinematography is stunning. And Zhang Ziyi is breathtaking as Chiyo/Sayuri.
You think so? The sound track is stunning. Scores are usually a good way to tell if a movie is good or not. Do you know where I can watch it with English subtitles? Or is is English spoken?
This is just pure art , i am utterly fascinated i can't even describe it with words ♥♥ the movie is beyond amazing with the music , scenery, acting, outfits , i feel like it's so underrated
I love the movie. I'm such a nerd when it comes to movies and stuff. Though I have to admit that after watching the grudge I've been scared of pictures that look straights at you but this picture is so beautiful. She's looking through me and reassuring me that I'll be ok through my struggles. Thank you memoirs of a geisha you are the best
sayuri is such a beautiful women with fawless beauty and the eyes of a blue dragon fire color to match her perfect name and I love this theme it matches her
This song is like the song of birth, the song of creation of the universe and the world. I feel so in sync with all when i listen to this song. So so pure and beautiful.
I read the book and Omg this book brought me to tears yet I felt like I was there, watching every scene that was happening in every single page and learning something new about how Geisha were actually trained back then in Japan...This book was amazing
There is really no reason why they couldn't have had the dialogue in Japanese. At least Zhang Ziyi had to memorize her lines phonetically anyway because she could speak so little English at the time, plus Japanese is easier for most Chinese people than English. It's just so utterly inane that a movie about Japanese culture, in Japan, has to be spoken in English just because it's directed at an English-speaking audience. Subtitles, hello? That would've showed a little more respect towards Japanese culture, and other cultures in general.
LOL! Amazing comment! I completely agree with you. I do not know much about Mandarin and Cantonese, but Japanese accent wise it would have been easier for the actress. My Japanese instructor was from China and I am from England. We were talking about the American accent, which she had such a hard time mastering. Nobody ever thinks of American accents being difficult to tackle, but they really can be. It would have been more realistic if it had been in Japanese, but maybe they figured since they were using a Chinese actress (not to mention the US military in the movie) they would just make even less sense lol.
***** Don't you realize what you're saying? In American movies not all actors are born in America, even so, they act. Why shouldn't different nationalities be in this movie like in any other. Acting is to become someone else in the process and that's what they did.
It's an American movie, therefore it's in English. If it's a German movie, it'd be in German. Likewise, if it's a Japanese movie, it'd be in Japanese. Quit bitching.
Jimmy G More annoying IMO that they took Chinese actor. They couldn't find one Japanese female for the part? I prefer when actors are of nation they are supposed to represent. As much as I like Connery wasn't too happy have him in hunt for red october as a russian either. Ah well. At least she did do her part well which is good.
Never knew this movie was so good. I consider myself a really manly guy and I found this movie an epic adventure. Learned alot and found geisha to be fascinating and same time very tragic. Beautiful yet wounded deeply. A masterpiece. I never thought to look and when I did I forgot it was 3am.
I think the picture sends shivers down my spine because she isn't looking at me. She's looking through me.
John Williams... what a fucking musical genius.
+Bert Jete must you use such foul language? so UNcool
Judith Schlomer Yes
limited vocabulary, I see
Judith Schlomer Limited no, to the point, selective and preferred, yes.
+Bert Jete lol i don't swear, but i do see your point. and yes, he is a genius. this music is beautiful.
I think the movie is underrated. It can't hold a candle to the book of course, but it is a piece of art seen on its own. The music, the actors, the costumes! Wow!
I am also sometimes sentimental; but what is the great worth of this? It's a glorification of the idea of so called high end prostitution
Adrian Zonderva
Who cares?
SLWs just have to crap all over everything, don't they?
It's not glorification, it's just showing us a way different culture, one that we didn't know much of. Like it or not, geisha existed, so why not get to know their story? Yes there was love and happy ending in the film but the point wasn't that, it was the life they had to live and the situations they had to face.
I don't think the movie is so light compared to the book. You're right, it's a masterpiece :)
Dear John Williams,
You are the most awesome musician ever, you are the hero of music.
The songs that you compose always fits into the films, like Star Wars, Memoirs of a Geisha, Jurassic Park, E.T and etc..
YOU'RE THE BEST!

pure? explain tentacle hentai then bitch!! Explain the huge problem with train groping.
john willow that racist. It just a complement about the Japanese culture.
Dirty Weeb that’s like saying “explain white fetish porn”. You have weird things in every culture lol
Christina A Good point.
Okay I find their culture interesting but far from pure seeing what they done to others in the 20th
This song is so beautiful and praise John Williams who wrote such a beautiful piece of music
I swear he has a gift! He even made the music for Jurassic Park and Jaws👌
and...Star Wars, ET, Indiana Jones.....
John Williams wrote a beautiful piece of music so the Japanese must be wonderful and magical people!
This film always take me to the world of my ilusion. i cant even describe my feelings. It something magical... The colorful and just so beautiful movie :')
+ShinraiTensei Ok girl you made me curious. I'm gonna watch it now.
+ShinraiTensei you should read a book, if you think this about movie ...
Markéta Slaninová I'm not a book reading guy... But I should ...
+Markéta Slaninová The book is so beautiful and a great read.
+Savo E. (ExotIc) Me too.
this is absolutely sick.......one of the best movie soundtracks I've ever heard. But then, you can't expect anything less from John Williams.
Délicatesse, élégance, espoir, désespoir, tout y est... Cette musique est juste incroyable, comme le film.
A pleurer tant c est beau
This movie is one of the best movies I've seen. Beautiful music, beautiful scenery and a haunting story of the memories of a Geisha. Truly lovely.
John Williams should have won the Oscar for the score of Memoirs of a Geisha!!
John Williams is a national treasure. His lyrical and majestic style places him in the ranks of Mozart et. al. I never tire listening to his work.
Love this movie. Soundtrack is what brings it to a whole other level though. Zhang Ziyi is so stunning!
Hatsumomo stop making accounts just to dislike this
Apparently it smells like fish.
It's amazing how you start seeing water flowing throughout the theme when you close your eyes. This is perfect for sayuri!
As much as I love the soundtrack, it makes me rather sad knowing the truth about this movie. The man who wrote the original book was based off an actual woman who told him to keep it a secret. Yes but the story about the mother was based off the story of a real woman.
MsMaritya if it was, then they were not a proper Geisha. Real Geisha during that time did not sell themselves for sex, even in the more "cultured" way that they portray in the book. RainAngel111 That's what they're saying; the author of this (awful) book twisted her story to make it more profitable. It's pretty disgusting.
He was an immoral guy, but a pretty good writer. Sad.
I read another good book about the life of a Geisha... I can't remember the title, but she wrote it after hearing about this book and all the lies. It was very good.
listen to the rhythm of emotion
In the last year I have watched this movie at least 6 times. Someone at work lent it to me and when I watched in the first time I immediately bought my own bluray copy on Amazon. The first time I watched it I cried at the end. The sixth time I watched I still cried at the end. Very well written. Best movie of all time

The movie and music is mesmerizing. I absolutely love the book!❤ After I read I've studied more about Geisha and Japanese culture!
I completely agree with you 💯
Some geisha gave me a tug job to this song. God i love kyoto
Can’t wait to see Zhenya skating to this beautiful music
And now it's one of her most beautiful skates ever.
This movie will never get old. I watch it constantly I can never get sick of it.
Are you still watching?
I love watching this movie.. over and over again!
I had the privilege of living in Japan almost 9 years. What an enlightening experience. I read the book and loved it so much I loaned it to everyone I knew read. Exquisite piece with Yo Yo Ma and John Williams

I had this soundtrack in my mind today, on my birthday... one of my favourite movies.

And the movie is closer to the book but read the book first it's gonna be more charming while you watching the movie :)
Incredibly stunning piece executed perfectly by 3 legends and a perfect full orchestra.
Omg, I have this book and love it. I had no idea it was a film!
As a fan of the book it's a must-see :) Not as good as the book (which is usually the case) but the cinematography is stunning. And Zhang Ziyi is breathtaking as Chiyo/Sayuri.

It's in English! And yes the soundtrack is amazing, really reflects the beauty of the cinematography
Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki is the real story. Arthur Golden based his book of off of her life but, didn't portray it as she told it.
AL SG There is no real story, the book is a fictional work.
This is just pure art , i am utterly fascinated i can't even describe it with words ♥♥ the movie is beyond amazing with the music , scenery, acting, outfits , i feel like it's so underrated
John Williams is the God of music...
I agree totally with you! he is the greatest composer of all time :D
He is a true master of his craft, and what makes him even more remarkable is that no matter how much time goes by he never seems to run out of ideas.
By far one of my favorite movies and the book is absolutely amazing. The music is simply superb gives me chills everytime I listen to the soundtrack.
This song make me think about all the lessons of this book and movie... Real life, REAL life is hard.

I always put this theme for my sister since her name is Sayuri,
bless you for honoring her! how lovely
REALLY?! Oh my God, it's indeed one of the prettiest names out there. I was planning in maybe naming a future pet of mine Sayuri :)
Yo Yo Ma and Itshak Perlman? And Williams. Incredible
Music and books are two of my favorite things, because both can take you to magnificent places, without even moving a finger. This song is fantastic.

***** Would you happen to know the titles of the music in the film? Just watched and must say, amazing film.
they are stupid
C'est vrai que cette musique reflète parfaitement la beauté du film. Musique comme film, tout est magnifique.
I love this song even in the movie when she becomes gashia
being a geisha was far more better than being an oiran (sex slave)
One of my favourite movies & books ever... love it & the music is so atmospheric 💖💖💖
Who is John Williams ?
Is he God?
+Nigel Fletcher well in our eyes and ears he is the god of music scores
Come on! Yes, he is cool and so... but he is not John Williams!
He's made some of the most iconic music in cinematic history so yes.
Yes he is God.
*YES HE IS*
This was one of my favorite books and movies as a kid

I loved the movie and now the sounds track as well
I know the movie got a lot of criticism and life wasn't easy but it makes my life feel so boring
Maybe that is because it is? Just an observation. You could make a good living in a pair of heels and a short skirt.
aaaah John Williams never disappoints me!
Beautiful grooming story, incredibly inspiring how he avoided jail. So touching, much like the interaction between the child and the 40 year old man
😯
Beautiful song.....
I believe she blinked once
Wow, spooky, which point?
The book is pure gold, I always recommend it
Evgenia fs song😍😍
Never knew this movie was so good. I consider myself a really manly guy and I found this movie an epic adventure. Learned alot and found geisha to be fascinating and same time very tragic. Beautiful yet wounded deeply. A masterpiece. I never thought to look and when I did I forgot it was 3am.
Something sounds so similar to this and I can't pin my finger on it...
