A WORLD WITHOUT GUNDAMS?!?! "GAIA GEAR" (1992 Radio Drama) EPISODE 1-3 DISSECTION

  • For over 30 years, many GUNDAM fans have believed that "Victory Gundam" was regarded as the FINAL ENDING CHAPTER to the UC Timeline.
But what If I told you that before that anime was even released; the creators of gundam produced a sequel to the events of Char's Counterattack and a follow up to Gundam Hathaway's Flash set 100 YEARS into the future. A story that many of us in the west haven't even heard of before.
That story was "GAIA GEAR". Released as a series of 5 novels written around the same time as the original "Hathaway's Flash" books (and later an audio drama which I will be dissecting), Yoshiyuki Tomino created a brand new story that was centered around "Afranche Char" (a clone of the late Char Aznable) as he fights the forces of "The Manhunter Agency" (who we're first properly introduced to us in the Hathaway's Flash books) and their armies of highly advanced "Man Machine" mobile weapons.
Piloting the titular "GAIA GEAR α", Afranche must help a fledgling resistance stand against the federation's agents now bent on tyranny. On his journey, he'll uncover the truth and reasons why he was created. Unlock and discover as well as hopefully rectify the past mistakes/flaws of the fallen Zeon hero and ultimately try yo live up to his genetic forbearer in his own mission to survive this new age of overpowering technology, human de-volution and suffering and sheer utter chaos.
(Sorry for any audio issues. microphone isn't up to snuff. ALSO I got super mad when I realized I didn't make this video for widescreen. Oh well, that'll be a fix for part 2.
ALL MUSIC, ARTWORK AND IMAGES ARE OWNED BY THEIR RESPECTIVE COMPANIES AND CREATORS.

The Gaia Gear Alpha is an honorary Gundam in my opinion.

One thing I thought if Gaia Gear gets animated. What if Metatron refitted and rebuilt older UC MS but to Man Machine specs. Imagine a refitted Zeta Gundam but with minovsky flight tech and beam shields added. Also the only thing shared between Lala and Everly is that they are south Asian. Lala is indian while Everly is either Indonesian or Philippino. But the comparison is done for laughs with Afranche Char comenting on his predecessor's taste in women.

Lol that’s one way to look at it, but I recommend that you continue watching, as there is a very important meta-contextual reason why Everly looks the way she does. Part 10

I’m glad someone is doing a full analysis on Gaia Gear and how it speaks more generally to the ethos of Tomino’s other Gundam works.
Reading the current fan translation of Tomino’s Hathaway Flash novels, I envisioned that and Gaia Gear forming a sort of duology. The man who wasn’t Char but became him vs the man who was Char but became someone else, though I’m speaking purely from cultural osmosis and summaries surrounding Gaia Gear really. I’m an EOP, so I have to wait on the fan TL for that as well (I decided not to consume via the audio drama, since I prefer reading Tomino’s novels to anything not his own TV anime).
Amazing content, lovely to see actual Gundam analysis beyond the usual suspects.

The first time I came across Gaia Gear was in late 1989 with an issue of September '89 Newtype Magazine. The awesome artwork and apparent story (obviously a story, but I could and cannot read Japanese) got me instantly hooked. I immediately grabbed whatever Newtype magazine came into the comic shop from that point on. I know there was a radio play collection put together sometime in 1992 and in 1991, a company called BuildUp made a few limited 1/220 scale Gaia Gear kits.

I came after watching the first part of your Gundam Sentinel work, congratulations on the implementing of your battle grid, it was truly essential for a 3 times more complete image of the battlefield, also thank you for this funny and detailed essay, I'll continue from here on.

If Hathway could be made canon to the main UC timeline, then so can both Sentinel and Gaia Gear!

Sentinel is canon. Gaia Gear at least needs to be made canon and given non P Bandai kits.

Sentinel has always been canon, and HF has been since Bandai decided to start milking it in Video games back from G Generation F.
Also, That HF movie is NOT canon, fuck that brownwashed Kenneth Slegg. Kenneth is an ARYAN with blonde hair and blue eyes. This is SPECIFICALLY written in the novel.

so the federation knew about Char being cloned and didn’t think about cloning Amuro as s countermeasure

Lol, this is the federation we’re talking about. They’re dumb AF and we all k ow it. XD besides, this is the manhunters who’ve discovered it. Not the federation themselves.

Jupiter tried. Didn't end well. Also unlike the Sazabi the Nu Gundam's entire cockpit was missing after the Axis shock.

I've always been aware of Gaia Gear since around 2012 but have never been able to track down much on or about it and have always been very curious so thanks a million this is greatly appreciated. I look forward to the next video and intend to tell others of your channel. Again thank you.

In the Victory Gundam Manga, all of the Newtypes were loaded in the Space Colony and went somewhere far away in deep space. Led by Grey Stokes

    • @GaiaGaiyus
      @GaiaGaiyus  2 месяца назад +2

Actually that’s not entirely true. A large group of newtypes departed the earth sphere on the Dandelion Expedition; however the Victory Gundam: Project Exodus manga takes place during the events of the second half of the victory anime. Where with the world of the UC as it stands at that point; there are still a large quantity of newtypes still scattered about. By the time of Gaia Gear; ever since the dandelion voyage, newtypes have managed to slip away and back into myth. Leaving Gaia Gear to tell the story of how it is the world of UC has treated their disappearance after 50 years. After 50 years since the events of victory, the people of the earth sphere see the newtypes and philosophy attached to it as more of an old legend… but they’re not entirely extinct.

He's actually what the Spacenoids deserve. Char's memories and capability with Amuro's compassion and perspective on Earth. Shame it's tragically ignored by everyone in that time. Though if Gaia Gear and G Savior get refined versions of their respective stories it might be interesting to see both MM and MS working together.
