A similar thing to Yucatan happened apparently with Calcutta. Some brits came to the place now called Calcutta and asked the farmers what the place was called. They thought the brits we asking about the crops they were transporting and they replied with "kal kata" which translates to "cut it yesterday" and the name has stuck ever since. (This might be utter bogus as is the case with most naming stories)

    • @FreddieHg37

In the Yucatán peninsula it's very likely that was the case since either: "Mahathan Yù Ak Ah-tán" or "Yūk Ak kat'án" were ancient Mayan peninsular dialect forms of saying basically "I don't understand your language; I don't speak your tongue".
Spanish who first arrived there must have heard these sort of phrases when trying to communicate a lot and thought that was the name of the area, and this, plus the fact that there were a lot of placenames similar sounding may have lead the Spanish to believe it was the case, example:
Yu-Cal-Petén ("Yu", meaning string of pearls or pearl necklace, "Cal" meaning neck or choke, and "Petén" place or land), Yuca-Petén (place of the yucas, a lot of villages, settlements and areas were called like this as well), Yalxán, Yalsihón, Yaxkukul, Yaxkukulcán, among others.
There were other similar phrases in Maya dialects that the Spanish may have heard which contributed to this like: Yu'ukatán (I'm not from here/they're not form here), Uh Yu hthaán / Uh Yu Ka ht'aan (Listen to the -funny - way they speak), Ma'naatik ka t'aan (I don't understand your speech), Ci u t'aan (I can't understand), Ki u t'aan (I don't know what you're talking about), etc.
Also another chronicle refers to an encounter one of the ships of Columbus fleet had with Honduran Maya merchants in the Caribbean with whom they exchanged goods and they started their conversation with "Yuk'al-taan Mayab" meaning something to the effect of: "everyone who speaks our language (Mayan) comes from where we come" (Mayab was the placename ancient Maya gave to the area of the Yucatan peninsula and part of northern central America and they were from modern day Honduras).

I've heard that "kangaroo" comes from "angaru" which means something along the lines of "I don't understand you".
This was during the colonial times, when a British man asked a native what the animal was, and he said "Angaru" or something like that.
      The name stuck ever since.

10:55 Making the Germans go through Belgium was actually the whole point of the Maginot Line (plus creating jobs during the Great Depression). The idea was Belgium would build their own thicc fortification line cutting straight north of where the Maginot line in France ended, making for a much shorter and cheaper line. Then, when it looked obvious war was happening, the plan was Belgium would permit French and British troops to enter their territory before Germany mobilised, letting the Allies man those fortifications. But then not only did Belgium not really build anything (because Great Depression and they were too broke to pay for it), the Belgian government also chickened out and declared neutrality and wouldn't let Allied forces into their territory until the Germans were literally crossing the border.

@@pecetabla8042 yes that too. the line was supposed to follow along the Belgo-german border, which would have been less costly. but when Belgium retracted their pact with France, they decided to build much lighter fortifications on the Franco-Belgian border, as building the same level of fortifications on this section would have been significantly more costly due to lowlands and swampy areas.
But the most critical mistake was to neclect the Ardennes forest hills (south of Belgium on the french border) thought to be impassable for the german tanks. And there goes the blitzkrieg.

Places and things being named due to misunderstanding are surpriisingly common. As far as I know, the UK didn't use to have spruces. When Polish merchants arrived with spruces in England, the English merchants asked "what's this?". Polish merchants answered in Polish - "świerk". Since that was difficult to understand, the English followed up with another question: "Where did you get it from?", to which Poles would answer "Z Prus" ("From Prussia"). Write that in accordance with English phonetics and you get "spruce".

The Maginot line worked perfectly. It defended open terrain. The real surprise is how quickly German troops moved through the forest where to engage where the line was weak.

    • @Clemehl
      @Clemehl Год назад +2

To be fair, the initial plan was French and Belgian troops to defend on Belgian soil because both countries knew that they will invade Belgium first. That is also why France didn't initially plan to fortify its border with Belgium. When Germany remilitarised the Rhineland by 1936 and France/England didn't act, Belgium just gave up its alliance with France and went neutral... This is were WWII started: Germany knew that France/England will respect Belgium neutrality, therefore completely safe from being invaded by their West flank, so Germany could do whatever it wanted.
France now have to plan to defend the Belgian border which was way harder to do. The first Maginot Line took 10 years to be built, financed by German war reparation. The second one only had 3-4 years, extended on harsher soil, without German war reparation (finance was a problem): it was lighter.
France and Germany made ballsy moves. France thought it could protect Belgium and went all in. Germany thought France would be ballsy, so they went by the Ardennes to flank them. Basically, if France didn't tried to battle the German on Belgium soil and stayed at home, France/Germany war would end in a stalemate even with French semi-obsolete material and half population.

The Maginot Line's fault wasn't that it didn't go far enough into France but that Belgium didn't build their part of the line which allowed the Germans to go around the fortifications. If they had completely their half, the Germans wouldn't have broken through the Ardennes because their would have been hundreds of fortifications in their way. This is Belgium's fault for stopping construction after the Rhineland was remilitarized and their King thought that neutrality would be a more effective defense than an impenetrable line of forts.

The difference is that the Americans went in with the objective of incorporating Canada into the US, while the British and Canadians only fought to defend Canada. As the Americans were unable to fulfil their objectives, while the British were able to sustain the status quo with a meagre defense force because of Napoleon, and the fact that the Royal Navy had also annihilated most of the US navy, causes many who actually look into the war to realise that the Americans had lost, while the British and Canadians had won, as they had succeeded in defending.

In the Yucatán peninsula naming it's very likely that was the case since either: "Mahathan Yù Ak Ah-tán" or "Yūk Ak kat'án" were ancient Mayan peninsular dialect forms of saying basically "I don't understand your language; I don't speak your tongue".

The forest of Skund was indeed enchanted, which was nothing unusual on the Disc, and was also the only forest in the whole universe to be called -- in the local language -- Your Finger You Fool, which was the literal meaning of the word Skund. The reason for this is regrettably all too common. When the first explorers from the warm lands around the Circle Sea travelled into the chilly hinterland, they filled in the blank spaces on their maps by grabbing the nearest native, pointing at some distant landmark, speaking very clearly in a loud voice, and writing down whatever the bemused man told them. Thus were immortalised in generations of atlases such geographical oddities as Just A Mountain, I Don't Know, What? and, of course, Your Finger You Fool.
