  • Learn more about the School Street Development and how this community embraces the trend of New Urbanism. In the midst of the recent housing crisis, Chicago area developer, John McLinden, sensed the American Dream was undergoing a bit of a renovation. He formed StreetScape USA with a vision of implanting idyllic neighborhoods with urban character into the heart of suburbs and cities. Visit our blog to learn more: www.jameshardie....

Perfection personified! This approach to effective land use impresses me. The neighbourhood enchants, delights, and mesmerises the senses. Are there close shops and public transport in the equation?

Realistically, 26 single family homes rolled out at the same time is not 'new urbanism'. It's just the subsidized suburbanism of the 1950s. Sure, this will be a really great family neighbourhood for a decade or so. A lot of young families will move in. Their kids will have an amazing childhood. Then, the children will grow up. The homes will be owned by empty nesters. The neighbourhood will then be replaced by the usual suburban mishmash of elderly people with too much property to maintain (these properties will fall into disrepair), rented houses with an annually revolving door of 6 different roommate joint tenants (slum properties), and the occasional new family who wants to live in what will eventually be a rough neighbourhood. New urbanism demands a mix of properties and a mix of tenancies from the start.

I used to be a big supporter of modern housing but looking at this I’ve changed my mind. We need more of this

A house is NOT a consumer product. Because, it's part of the built environment, and affects more people than the consumer him/her self.
By the way, it's nice to see New Urbanism concepts being applied into housing developments.
