14:20 You have pretty much two linguistic families in Europe, the Romanic and Germanic languages and then the Slav languages on the Balkan and in Eastern Europe (plus remains of Celtic, Basque, Iberian and other small languages). Dutch is usually considered the genealogic link between Lower German and Old English; modern English took in a lot of additional French influence through the Norman conquest, which is why most of the vocabulary is Germanic, but you have oddities sprinkled in, like 'air' is analogous to 'air' (F), 'aire' (ES) and 'aria' (IT), while it's 'Luft' in German, and 'lucht' in Dutch. And a lot of naval vocabulary is shared between German, English and Dutch, als 'railing'-'Reling', Deck, Bord, starbord-Steuerbord, Captain-Kapitän and so on. Also, the vikings brought some Northern Germanic scandinavian words in.
Finnish and Magyar are fucking weird, though.

The similarities between English and Dutch aren't that surprising if you know a little bit about historical linguistics. Dutch and English (you can add German to that as well) belong to the same language family. Not only are they all germanic languages. They are also West Germanic languages, which is a sub-group of the Germanic languages. Therefore they are deeply related.
Thought I'd leave this here, as someone might be interested in it :)

With family in Iceland, I always want to warn people about visiting. Tourism is kind of destroying the country. Their infrastructure just can't handle the huge influx they've recently been getting. I'm sure it's helping the economy but you hear horror stories from locals. People going to the bathroom just in yards and things because there's not enough bathrooms around in the tourist locations too. Tourists deciding the beaten path isn't good enough and getting lost or dying off trail. It's a beautiful country but again, careful of visiting.
You also might never actually see a native Icelander while there, unless you go into a family shop. It seemed like everyone was an immigrant, except our own family. My aunt was excited to speak Icelandic casually again and couldn't find anyone to speak it with lol

The main reason so many European languages seem similar to English is mostly due to the fact that Great Britain has rolled over on its back exposing its stomach to invaders too many times to count in its early history, thus causing a ton of languages to drip over into what is now modern English.
