I also learned that Jissoji has a plush tanuki son! As a proud thing named Paul who, too, also has a raccoon plush son, I am glad to know I ain't alone. 🥲
Chiaki Konaka also was the major creative driving force of Digimon Tamers (which he apparently really wanted to do and loved working on). That’s actually how I learned about him so knowing he worked in Ultra Series content in addition to the horror anime he’s written is a funny way to link some things I like (Tokusatsu and Digimon, I mean). Also while I’d heard of Shozo Uehara before I didn’t know he had that big of a toku résumé! Reminds me of how Koichi Sakamoto has worked on a massive amount of toku.
Uehara invented the sentai series (goranger main writer), the space sherrif series (the trilogy writer), and had a hand in creating the kamen rider series (though he wouldn't land a writing role until kamen rider black).
Great review. The episode with the woman forming by a puzzle is eerie and a neat idea plus they did a pretty good attempt at making Pigmon look kinda creepy. Lol at the "clown music" intro
You had me at "Japanese Twilight Zone," but you really piqued my interest with the X-Files comparisons and the presence of Chiaki Konaka. Digimon Tamers for life.
Good video! Dark Fantasy, while not being the best show in the Ultra Series, is one of my favorites. I don't mind the opening music but I'm heavily biased; I personally adore the ending music used in the first half of the show. Also, you don't talk about my favorite episode in the show, episode 2, which I found genuinely unsettling with it's twist ending giving me a proper spook when I first watched it years ago.
Neo Ultra Q has a similar issue of having very few (if any?) daikaiju episodes, presumably because of budget. I still like it a lot but it's not really a Kaiju series. It's a lot closer to a straight "Japanese twilight zone" like this show is. DF feels influential on Neo Q
I hope you'll do more retrospective on non-Ultraman shows that were created by TsuPro, many of them are also underrated, like Bio Planet Woo, said to be a successor or replacement to the Ultraman series.
Always makes me wonder why this isn't under Tsuburaya Productions, but Tsuburaya Entertainment, yet the creatures are free to cross over into the Ultra series? Edit: Well I guess you explained it. Also +3 Gandar joke.

Found a bootleg DVD set of this free at g-fest several years ago. Someone went around and put DVD bootlegs of movies and shows on all of the tables at the con that weren't dealers tables. Got five or six different sets as my kids were running around trying to find and them.
Lol that complain about music felt personal. Yeah it dont have "Boohoo hahahaha Im scary music" but I think it is pretty good. It got that "Welcome to mystery" vibes. As you said, it is supernatural series
