The reveal in "They Shoot Horses" where it grows clear that the winner will find nearly all of their prize money is already earmarked for expenses... The darkness of thar moment and what it all meant was so massive and horrible. I never forget it.
I've seen and read They Shoot Horses Don't They and I'm currently reading a non fiction work about the Dance Marathons...really intersting to see documentary images. Dance Marathons were the "reality TV" of its time.
What's the non fiction work you're reading, or well, the one you read 11 years ago... Jeez haha, but Ive just heard about these awful barbaric, exploitative dance marathons and I want to know more about them
My great grandmother Maybelle Nelson (tho she was married 6 times and I dont know what her name was when she won) won a 6 month marathon. But I cant find anything anywhere on it or pictures. Family History lost. =(
This was the most barbaric way to treat people who were down on their luck due to the Depression. To keep someone sleep deprived for hours to months is just the most unconscionable thing I've ever seen. "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" Today this would be TOTALLY outlawed as cruel and unusual torture. After several hours without adequate rest and sleep you would begin to hallucinate. I can't imagine the condition of the persons who endured months of this just to win some money. They probably dropped dead before they could even collect it. And in many cases these marathons were rigged by shady promoters and people got cheated. I once participated in an 12 hour skate marathon at a local skating rink. I too got cheated out of first prize when I had to stop and retrieve my skate stopper that had come loose and rolled across the floor. I did all 12 hours and was so tired that I slept all the next day. Imagine not sleeping for 5 months!
I am one sick individual but I could NEVER take joy watching one of these marathons where people suffer needlessly just to keep their belly full. Do yourself a favor and watch They Shoot Horses, Don't They? It's free here on RUclips, directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Jane Fonda.
@@philipdefibaugh7127 i know this was a year ago but just wanted to say that since it was during the depression the prize of money wasn’t the only thing keeping them there. they also got free food and a place to sleep, even if they could only do it for very few hours per day
no!! it’s horrific exploitation torture of desperate fellow humans!! true human kinship compassion love shares food warmth shelter compassion with their brothers and sisters not this!! thus is holocaust, horrific, haunting ~ can barely watch
No actually they had to keep dancing while eating, shaving, whatever. Got 10 minutes rest not sure at what intervals also how did they go to the bathroom?
This is Zombie dancing without the zombie makeup and costuming. I don't know who's scarier the near comatose dancers or the sinister looking nurses trying to revive them. I wonder what the prize was to the poor fools who lasted the entire marathon.
This is sickening... Even though I know everybody was desperate for a job at that time, it’s almost unbelievable to see that nurses were co-operating at this! It seems very much against the Hippocratic principles...
funny that you're reprimanding the nurses (who, during the Great Depression still needed jobs lol) and not the rich people watching the poor dance for MONTHS for so little money. shifting the blame to the nurses of all people (the people taking care of these practically tortured beings) is sickening
@@cruisindownthestreetinmy6490 Indeed! My “sickening” comment was referring to the practice of these dance marathons in general. It sickens me to think that people organised these types of contests and attended them for entertainment. The phrasing of my comment may have shifted the focus on the nurses. You very rightly pointed out that they were victims of this exploiting and humiliating practice too! Forced to go against their principles to keep from starving themselves…
@fashionhistorylover They had 1 hour of break time for sleep, bathroom breaks, etc every 24 hours. They ate, shaved, brushed teeth, etc. at a high bar while the kept their feet moving. They would also have semi-concious naps while leaning on their partners.

How much did they win?
What do you mean 10 months??
How often did they sleep and eat?

If anyone is interested, the film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" is available on RUclips, the full length movie, no ads, pretty decent quality.
This haunts me to my core. Exploitation at the cruelest level.

I can't believe those marathons lasted for months. It sounds so barbaric.
well, you are obviously younger, so maybe it sounds awful but the reality was so much worse

These were the precursor to TV shows like Big Brother, Survivor and the Great Race.
for me, the true origin of the Battle Royale genre, a lot of the spectacle came from how they did these

and the more fortunate just watch this torture and having fun!
They could sleep two hours and there were breaks, also food and drinks while they were on their feet. Still unconscionable
When I first found out this was the way of many to access medical care, my first thought was, 'yep, sounds American'.
The longest someone has gone without sleep is just over 11 consecutive days. They were allowed to sleep, but only in their partner's arms.
I'd rather get in the UCF cage and take on 5 guys at once than endure one of these dance marathons. Truly.
sooooo bloody evil. How desperate must these people have been, and how evil were those who called this entertainment.....just plain nasty. Poor loves.
Looks like a torture-show.
That is crazy. 5 months of dancing. They weren't really dancing. More like, keep your partner standing up or they're out of the dance marathon.
Dance with the devil marathon
It's called St. James Infirmary, though I'm not sure who sings it here. It's an old blues song so many people have done their own renditions.
So depressing what desperate people will put themselves through. The Jane Fonda film "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" showed it very well.
Stuff You Should Know (a free podcast i listen to on google podcasts) brought me here.
