South African batsman Faf du Plessis after playing in Australia said that Australian players are like a pack of wild dogs. They start circling the opposition batsman and everyone chips in and takes a bite. You can see that pack mentality in this video. It is a pity that Match Referee only saw the reaction of Harbhajan Singh instead of watching who started the incident and how cleverly Harbhajan was provoked and led into the trap. Australia's sledging tactics backfired on them when it was exposed that they start most of the incidents to gain an unfair advantage over opposition players. Typical bullies. Running to Mommy when someone gives it back.

The more I think about and review these types of incidents between Australia and India, the more I'm convinced that it is a cultural disconnect that escalates to these public spats. As an Aussie, even at schoolboy level, you are subjected to some pretty nasty stuff from your opposition; yet, you learn to fight fire with fire. Certain things are out, such as derogatory comments directed at family, sisters, girlfriends etc, or racial background, but everything else is in. That includes, most commonly, commentary on one's sexual prowess and variations on that theme. And it is relatively easy to rebut. It's almost expected that you will cop it and the agitants expect to receive it back. In a way, it's kind of a 'perfect' dichotomy, and at the end of play, everyone has a bit of a giggle about it all. The teams get together and you hear things such as, "Oh, what about when Macca said....., and then Wazza said....." That's why Australians hold dearly to the mantra of 'what happens on the field stays on the field'. Now, I can appreciate that other cultures won't cop to this sort of 'banter', which we find humorous, but others might take offence. The Aussie cricketers are slowly learning to adjust to this as cricket becomes an international sporting franchise, and the IPL will surely assist in the process. That said, it is understandable when, the Aussie cricketers are so severely scrutinised for even the mere scent of commentary that could be considered directed racism (e.g. Darren Lehmann's suspension prior to the 2003 World Cup), whereas an Indian gets away with a particular racist remark - after the teams had previously met, and discussed in a gentlemanly fashion - that said remark would remain off the table. It must be particularly rankling that the Australian Captain had, at first instance, attempted to deal with the matter in house, shake hands on the agreement, only for it to be torpedoed by a very disrespectful and universally disliked cricketer. And then, to bear witness to its own administration fold like a pack of cards before the monetary might of the BCCI! It's become a secondary sport to the game of cricket to beat up the Aussies for their aggressive 'sledging', but the rest of the world engage in the practice too and my take on it is that Australia, whilst pretty savage on the field of play, are probably the most adept when it comes to judging where 'the line' is - merely by virtue of the fact that they've been doing it the longest - whereas other countries, newer to the 'art', are probably the greater villains.
***** Yes it was. That's why he got suspended for it! And he didn't actually call a Sri Lankan player anything. He yelled out "black cunts" when he got back to the change room and was overheard by the Sri Lankan team manager from the visitors change room. I didn't see Slater standing anywhere near Harbhajan to know for sure what he said. I don't understand why initially there had to be a ban on Harbhajan considering there was no proof whatsoever against Harbhajan. Was it a prejudice or self- entitlement of Aussies that had caused the judge to make the decision against Harbhajan ? Those who have problems with BCCI keeping ICC in check should try to understand why from this particular instance.
I will agree the Mumbai crowd attitude was despicable to keep carrying on like that and there have been numerous incidences with the Indian crowd one I remember particularly when broadcast on live TV like the World Cup Match semi's between Sri Lanka and India 1996. Again in Australia a section of the Indian crowd began throwing rubbish when Indian batsmen was runout. Having said that Australian crowds particularly Sydney have not been too pleasant either especially with the Sri Lankan team.
It's not really nice.what if the Indian team went to Australia and the crowd hurled racial epithets, that wouldn't nice and I'm a hundred percent sure it'd have international news as well.

Australia's this unnecessary aggressive culture only lead to ball tampering incident in South Africa years later. Where they have finally learnt the lesson. Also the behavior of the Mumbai crowd is pathetic and disgraceful. Looks like nothing had changed from 1994 WC semifinal in Whankade.
Tony grief always supported india, Boycott once lashed Sachin in 1999 WC, Tony came to his support stating wrong toss wrong call and No agarkar and Sachin not fully fit and emotionally down others should take responsibility !!!! @mcnesta80 : I am not saying that Indian players are saints .If you get the time please watch 'Fire in babylon' you will get a very good idea of how the Windies were treated.
Aussies don’t like the taste of their own medicine. Racial comments are bad and should not happen at all, but aussies teams have bullied/sledged/cursed/cussed/cheated/defamed and what not and there are double standards floating..infact sandpaper gate is still not over
i happen to be a person who bears a huge interest on recent happenings of the world.. i am definitely not a narrow minded selfish freak.. i am well aware of the happenings in india and all other nations around the world.. it may come to u as a surprise but i know the business tycoons, the famous personalities and political condition in india very well..
Also, in no way does the stump recording of the whole incident indicate what Harbhajan actually said. It's just because Symonds is heard saying that he said so that the whole issue arises. Does this mean, kind sirs, if Symonds says that the sun today is going to set in the east that we are to believe him? Harbhajan was charged on "Zero" material evidences and only based on players' testimonies. Why then is the testimony of the OZs more acceptable than Indians'?
@dooshsayswhat : Agree with your response. So similarly in India people affectionately call each other "Monkey". I suspect Harbhajan wouldn't even have known that Monkey is a racist term. So in a nutshell, there needs to be a some sort of guidelines for abusive language used in cricket.
I've said it before and I say it again. This issue was blown way out of proportion and unduly politicised. Symonds exhibited TNB and was very really vindictive in the way he incriminated Harbhajan. Having said that, the turbaned idiot could do well to attend a few classes on anger management. As for Symonds, it's in his blood and cannot be cured.
This was started by aussies when they said - whatever happens in the grounds stays on the ground. Who are you to decide that? These pseudo rules are causing these kind of problems, please remember crowd everywhere remembers what is said to their icons and their teams and when their turn comes they give it back sometimes nastily.
The offset of this all is the results of the test matches since then. There have been a total of 9 series (including the last 2 matches after the 2008 Sydney test), 4 in India and 5 in Australia. India leads 15-9 in the test matches since then. India has won 2 series in Australia while Australia has won none in India. India has played better cricket than Australia. Let your bat and ball do the talking!
Michael Slater will come down in cricket history as the worst behaved cricketers of all time. What he did with Rahul Dravid was not sledging but abuse and foul mouthing and unbecoming of a cricketer.
Very old incident now Australian players have very good relationships with indian plyers they come to commentry here i mean who were involved in this incident like brett lee ponting also harbhajan nd Symonds plyed for one team after this they become friends Everything is fine now
Symonds was not abused for 3 games. Only the Mumbai crowd got nasty and they were wrong in doing that. Mumbai has been a nasty place for cricket. They even booed Sachin. They deserve to be penalised for it. That said, Slater saying whatever he is saying, is an asshole. Nobody has forgotten his behaviour in India. Symonds wasn't abused racially by Harbhajan in Sydney. The Australians were running scared so they had to go to mommy with a complaint. If it wasn't for nasty umpiring, India would have won that game comfortably.
@kuushaal i agree. its embarrasing for those who stay here to watch a live telecast with such idiots on the ground. '96 WC - Eden gardens against SL was a nightmare and we thot wed never get over it. But wankhede crowds make us go through it all over again and every single time thrs a match thr. i think the ground authorities need to be ruthless and evict unruly people without any explanation.
@dkanade1 There's the cultural clash right there, in Australia "bastard" is interchangable as a term of endearment or abuse. Paradoxically, if someone is "a bit of a bastard" they're nasty, but if someone is a "real bastard" he's a top bloke. Conversely, perhaps due to our shameful history towards aborigines, racial vilificaion is extremely sensitive here.
@adityanaikdesai ...Not at all. Firstly, there's harsher penalties in place for racism as opposed to just bad language, for a reason...if you don't understand that then you don't understand the difference. I agree that simple name calling should be no big deal...but if you want to include racist remarks in there, then you open up the floodgates. Regardless, the was an agreement at the start of that series to stamp it out.
I am an Indian residing in India am obviously a huge supporter of Indian cricket team but seeing the way the crowd abused and discriminated against Symonds made me bow my head in shame and feel sorry for the guy.. I mean no person deserves to be treated like that let alone a cricketer..
Aussies are the most race obsessed peeps I've ever met in my life..but I have to say that our people were a bit too harsh on Symonds..If we had to send a statement, we should've done it by owning their asses on the field..not through racist remarks
Michael Slater... The inventor of sledging! And by the way, money matters... Right now both these players are team mates and have been seen celebrating several times for Mumbai Indians!
When you do to someone you need to understand that it’s gonna come back. Australia thinks if they say something to anyone that’s spirit of the game and within limit. If others do it’s it’s breach of cricket. Absolutely crybabies.
YES, YES. What is this reaction? Looks like an Indian standing up for himself. Not taking shit. Great to see Symonds get out after the Mumbai sledge. Shows that sledging is not ineffectual like its perpertrators tout.
...and the White's urge for Brown skin is reflected by the increasing number of Tanning facilities provided by Hair/Beauty Salons and the number of people going to beaches in order to get tanned. It's both ways mate, heard of the saying, "Grass is greener on the other side." It's all about that!
Yes we Indians can be pretty mean to others sometimes but what happened to the Indian team on that your is just disgusting, the entire Australian team, audience and their media really hurt our team.

" and my argument makes enough sense if you choose to let it get in to your head "
- I see, so that's your way of saying that it doesn't make sense, but it does in your head.
Whatever you want to tell yourself.
And yes, it is giving back to the Aussies! Ganguly started it!
Ponting : hey,Symonds. What did he say?
Symonds : Whatever, he is banned. You can bat well in the next game.
Ponting : No, Anil is also there, ask him whether he can ban him too.
Symonds : We'll see that in next match, if he takes your wicket,we'll complain.
Ponting; Ok then.
Australian media supported unsportsmanship then.
Iam supporting india and india fans
@Roper122 :) ok thn . . . in ur own words buddy 'Whatever you want to tell yourself.'
The funniest thing is symonds came back ncrawling to play for Mumbai once the australian board disposed him.
6:55 got to love the mumbai crowd HAHAHAHAHA
It's not really nice.what if the Indian team went to Australia and the crowd hurled racial epithets, that wouldn't nice and I'm a hundred percent sure it'd have international news as well.
@@abhimanyu3505 They were chanting "Aussies suck". With them its simple, They feel like they can sledge.when someone gives back they cry like babies. There is a reason I posted time. In no way or form I m backing Rasicm.
Wankhede Stadium those days no limits that days
@@abhimanyu3505 doesn't matter it would feel like an aussie player sledging...
@@abhimanyu3505 Australians are one of the most racist people, you should check out their views on people from the subcontinent.
Australia's this unnecessary aggressive culture only lead to ball tampering incident in South Africa years later. Where they have finally learnt the lesson. Also the behavior of the Mumbai crowd is pathetic and disgraceful. Looks like nothing had changed from 1994 WC semifinal in Whankade.
ask micheal holding about the crowds in australia and what they useed to call him ??
Tony grief always supported india, Boycott once lashed Sachin in 1999 WC, Tony came to his support stating wrong toss wrong call and No agarkar and Sachin not fully fit and emotionally down others should take responsibility !!!! And slammed Team management decision to bowl first!!! Tony grief has soft corner towards india!!!!
@mcnesta80 : I am not saying that Indian players are saints .If you get the time please watch 'Fire in babylon' you will get a very good idea of how the Windies were treated.
Aussies don’t like the taste of their own medicine. Racial comments are bad and should not happen at all, but aussies teams have bullied/sledged/cursed/cussed/cheated/defamed and what not and there are double standards floating..infact sandpaper gate is still not over
Culprit aussies
i happen to be a person who bears a huge interest on recent happenings of the world.. i am definitely not a narrow minded selfish freak.. i am well aware of the happenings in india and all other nations around the world.. it may come to u as a surprise but i know the business tycoons, the famous personalities and political condition in india very well..
Love my Mumbai crowd they know how to treat liers
Thank you Mumbai
Yes! He was talking about his hair!
@Roper122 right bro...
i love the way tony greig counters slats..i think he was correct in showing the aussie the mirror
We should publish this now... How Symonds was so much hated... Which let to his downfall in his career
This incident destroyed Symmond's career. Racial vilification being justified to protect money in cricket.
Nice to see Tony sir supported india
@bhriguaneja good its bout time u sorted urself out
The offset of this all is the results of the test matches since then.
Very old incident now Australian players have very good relationships with indian plyers they come to commentry here i mean who were involved in this incident like brett lee ponting also harbhajan nd Symonds plyed for one team after this they become friends
Everything is fine now
Symonds was not abused for 3 games.
Where can i find that documentary?? I've watched it years ago... Wanna re watch it.. If anyone hav the link pls share
Why they are sitting so close😄😄😄
So why he poke bhaaji ...he invited all this ....
tere man ki is common phrase in india very casual phrase ....
Aussies are the most race obsessed peeps I've ever met in my life..but I have to say that our people were a bit too harsh on Symonds..If we had to send a statement, we should've done it by owning their asses on the field..not through racist remarks
RIP Tony
That's why tony Greig is great....slater is the opposite
Kudos to Tony greig
@mcnesta80 : Agree with your response.
Teri Maa Ki was what Bajji said but Symonds thought it is Monkey.
@410and443 Tequila and Fun for the world ... And CHILE for u, amigo!
...and the White's urge for Brown skin is reflected by the increasing number of Tanning facilities provided by Hair/Beauty Salons and the number of people going to beaches in order to get tanned. It's both ways mate, heard of the saying, "Grass is greener on the other side." It's all about that!
Yes we Indians can be pretty mean to others sometimes but what happened to the Indian team on that your is just disgusting, the entire Australian team, audience and their media really hurt our team.
Imran Ali 😭
@Roper122 right . . .this is where you fall short of anything sensible to say and reply with really vague but smart sounding stuff just to go one up. sigh .. . wht were we talking abt again?
