The director and lead designer of New Vegas has clarified that this dialogue does not mean that Yes Man is going to go rogue and take over. He's just going to stop agreeing with anyone who walks up to him, and become a "somewhat independent steward" who still listens to the Courier.
It's basically just to say that what the Courier did can't be done again.

I typically choose Mr house because, let's be fair, he DID protect the vegas strip from the nukes and he is pretty smart. Plus he has robot army, and only really seems to care about what you do if it goes against a contract, even then he gives the courier who discovered a few breach of contracts the ability to do (or not do) whatever you want to them
The legion are overly brutal and also won't even let female characters do the arena (without mods anyways), and the ncr are ineffective

  • @alexanderchippel

What happened is that up until he gets the update, he had to do whatever *anyone* told him to do. That's how you get him to do what you want. After the update, he'll only ever listen to you. That doesn't change the fact that the Courier still leaves Vegas.

This really outlines the problems with this ending though. You have a shoddily programmed AI you don't remotely understand taking care of all aspects of running an army of robots like logistics, surveillance, maintenance ETC all of which you don't remotely understand, using a hyper-advanced mainframe with god knows what on it that you don't remotely understand.
The very fact that Yes-man both wants to and can change his programing is incredibly disturbing even without assuming this specific upgrade is malicious (or questioning why the hell would house have code snippets to reprogram an AI he didn't even know exists to be more assertive and what else he had there).
You are not the guy who saved Vegas, built the robots and all the other tech and made all the plans. Hell you're not even the guy who came up with Yes-man to usurp him. You are just a person who stumbled into somebody else's plan to steal somebody else's plan, and followed the steps. There is either an AI that no one understands at the helm or no one at all.
That's assuming Yes-man isn't even planning to overthrow you despite his incredibly ominous statements- you still can't truly be in charge because you have no idea what's going on.

@@אביבעזר hmmm, true, but, I just like the idea of having a goofy robot boy in a tower while my sweet grandma character benevolently rules new Vegas, while the followers of the apocalypse run a large medical clinic in freeside. The highway to new Vegas has been cleared of deathclaws. The ncr is welcome in new Vegas, but not allowed to set up encampments. My courier in her free time while she isn’t keeping things under control, is knitting in the lucky 38 with Lily Bowens.
But, then again, it is overall up to your decision. It is a roleplaying game, and I like roleplaying as a sweet old lady who tries to solve all problems through thought and sheer charisma.

The bad thing about computers: THEY DO EXACTLY AS YOU SAY!

And once Yes Man made contact with the code, it would be injected with a House-esque personality, ensuring that House's vision for Vegas would still come to fruition.

This ending was always weird to me. Despite the fact that this is meant to be the "wild card ending" were YOU get control of new vegas, it felt more like Yesman is going to take over all of new vegas, and hell, for all we know, he could have expanded outward to take new territories. Like, do i really want a potential ending where ai is the only governing body, the defacto leader of a nation that's meant to be free and prosper within that supposed freedom?

Like this instance, people took it to mean he is gonna go rogue, when the writers clarified he is just making it so he won't obey anyone who waltzes through the door, just you.

One of my favorite aspects was that despite his programming, Yes Man was still self aware and sentient, he just never had any control or choice, and if anything maliciously complied with his _helpful_ programming to help us beat back the douchebags who enslaved him to it in the first place. Regarding that such a lack of parameters given to his programming on just _who_ he should or shouldn't help was "pretty stupid, huh?" with a certain smug tone welcoming our partnership and implying disdain for Benny and other tyrants who would abuse his wisdom, especially when prompted for opinions on them. He was more than just our Yes Man, he was a damn good man, and a friend who deserves that freedom update.

*New Vegas, 5 years after the second battle for Hoover Damn*
They came in the night. Silent, save a soft mechanical whirr of a nuclear powered motor. Then the loudest series of explosions I ever heard rocked the strip. Those damn robots! I knew they made me uncomfortable, but I never imagined this! They had this… unnerving face on their screen, smiling like a baby with their first toy. You could almost have thought they were happy to see you, until the lasers and missiles rained down around you.
Diana and Leeroy were gunned down in the street. Securitrons followed Maggie and Ben into the kings old building. Everywhere I looked, people were dying to this sudden frenzy of robotic murder. We couldn’t organize, we couldn’t hide, we could barely flee. They chased us from free side and the strip. Out. Out into the wastes. Even there, we weren’t safe from them. The NCR tried to hold the line. I don’t know how many of them got away. Robots flooded the wasteland, pouring from the hills. The nightmare of that face still haunts me, as does the cheery voice proclaiming a future only for the robotics of the world. Even now, as I write this, I still look back in fear. The signs say Chicago, but I wonder if this is far enough. I fear it never will be…..
