Most most helpful Adam. Gavin and others have spoken about this painting with masks. I have used lots of masks before in Lr but haven’t played too much in Ps with them yet. Thanks. Cheers.
Dropped my hiking pole crossing a river to a waterfall this last weekend. I have no confidence in my balance with my camera and tripod in the middle of a river. 😁 Enjoyed the video. thanks
Really enjoyed the video and the post processing was awesome. It's nice to be entertained and to learn at the same time. Great shot as well. Love the neoprene pants ;-)
Thank you dams. I am on the way to a waterfall soon, and this was just in the right time. I did take notes and certainly will help me a lot. Please, keep this sort of content coming, Is gold for me.
Brave parking on the side of the road :) The undisputed king of backwards drone flying :) Super Helpful Adam, wish I had waterfalls here in flat North Texas.
Great video. This is the first time that I have come across time blending but I can see where I can use it in my photography going forward. I'm excited to try it on my next outing. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks. This is a particularly clear tutorial on this technique. It’s 105 F here today in the east Columbia River Gorge. The scene of this tutorial seems from another planet, where the aliens wade about in neoprene waders.
Nice walk through! I’ve seen this method before but for some reason it’s taken me a few tutorials to wrap my head around the concept of painting black and white layers. I think it finally clicked for me with this video. Thanks, Adam! 👍🏻
Uhhh, you make it look so easy. ☺️ A wise person once said "processing is easy if you get it right in camera first". Explains why I have a difficult time with blending. 🙄🤔 I guess I should write down some of these golden nuggets of info, maybe I'll remember them when I'm in the field. 🤞 Great video Adam. Can't wait to hear about your new project! 🌳
Excellent video Adam thank you for sharing it. The finished photo turned out great you explained the technique in photoshop very well and made it look easy I might see if GIMP will do the same job
Great video. Thanks for explaining this in simple terms. Although I know the process I need to hear and see it many times to keep it locked in! Keep it up
I really love this photo! Probably besides mountain peaks, waterfalls are my most favourite subject to photograph! Great tutorial with the exposure blending as well!
Wow! I absolutely love this video, thank you so much! I appreciate your clarity in describing what you're doing. Oh and congratulations on your landscape photographer of the year back when it was.............I hope Gavin gave your trophy back, LOL.
Thank you for the tutorial on blending images Adam. I need to try out this technique on those situations where there is the need for a mix of exposures and focus points.
It's funny I've been using Photoshop for almost 30 years so messing around in there is no problem for me ... getting all the exposures or focus points I need out in the field not so much! 😂 I really appreciate your the step by step explanation waist deep in the big river! It's really helpful to know your approach for getting certain areas of the photograph in focus with the proper exposure.
I tried the same thing about a week ago! Mine was not so successful. Your Photoshop skills are far superior than what I tried. Thank you for showing how it should be done. I have brand new chest waders, however I can feel water slowly trickling in. 😂 Great tips Adam Cheers!
That was an excellent video Adam, so informative and very helpful indeed. I am pretty sure that I will need to watch it another couple of times to get to grips with the photoshop stuff but I am so looking forward now to giving this a go and I feel quite confident ( thanks to you and this video) that I will be able to put together a lovely waterfall photograph….oooh I am so excited to go out now. Thanks for sharing it Adam, keep up the good work 😁👍
Really liked the waterfall texture on the faster exposure and think it looked spot on when you blended it into the middle exposure. It's all personal preference I know but I think it gives a little more drama and force to the waterfall. May try raising my shutter speed a little next I'm out
Agree on this one & personal taste. I also liked one he showed a little slower where you could see where the water would meet with the ware on the rock below. I think it depends on how much water is flowing. Like you said this one, show the power of the water flowing. If it had a lot less water flowing slower, smoother or a slower shutter speed would set the mood, so to speak. Happy shooting.
Hey Adam... I've planned a two day getaway with my wife to Sooke & was wondering if there is any decent landscape locations nearby you would recommend? Water falls, seascapes or rivers within a half hour drive.
Adam i just love your style and learning from you. I was wondering when doing photo stacking or time stacking . Do you keep the aperature the same for each shot and just change speed? In your video you mentioned shallow depth of field on the ferns to the left side. Did you change the f stop for that shot or was each one done at a more open aperature... Love your videos and pictures thanks Adam
Your explanation of layers and masks is so simple that even a newbie to PS can easily understand it. What is missing is what do you do after you finish the time/exposure blending etc. If you save the image, PS quits and sends a .tiff file back to LR if I understand the workflow correctly. Do also save the photo in PS as a .psd file? Advantages and disadvantages of this?
My weightlifter legs would never work in neoprene; I'm thinking of a proper pair of hip waders for similar scenarios. Great demo of exposure blending, which I've seen Gavin do frequently. So, your not-so-secret "Gibbs and Hardcastle" project has already started? Or are you guys still arguing over the title sequence? 😉 Whichever, I look forward to it.
Your videos are always a welcome addition to my weekend. It is great the way you get into the logic of the files you create and how they all combine to the finished image. My question (and OCD) is how to keep track of the intention for each file in the finished image. Taking a shot of my hand at the start and end of a series helps, but doesn't explain how each image is intended to be used in post processing. The number of composition sets and subjects increases the complication of remembering WTF I was thinking in the field. Do you keep notes? Record audio?
Hi Adam! I have a rare break in my work schedule! I'm going on a short road trip to Victoria BC Sunday to Tuesday. Any good tips for nearby places to go find some shots? I am meeting family at Butchart Gardens Monday. How do you find ways to make pictures of places everyone else has done a billion times unique? Your videos are so damn helpful and just make Canada shine, the tourism board really should subsidize you! Also, it's been a while since you did a gear review- especially interested in what you look for in a travel tripod. Thanks!
I really appreciate your video Adam. I very much want to learn how to blend in PS, I'm not dim, but PS is so not user friendly. This video gave a glimpse of how it can be done. I think I would need more of a step by step guide to really crack it. Also, I'm not sure which operating system you use, so when you mention shortcuts, it would be helpful to say if that was on Mac or Windows. If you have something, including paid content, that goes into more detail, please shout. Cheers
Can you show the same focus blending process with Luminar Neo with the layers etc., as many have moved from PS to Luminar Neo to avoid the high subscription fee. That would be really great.
Adam, If I were to want to add other masks to make local adjustments for exposure, color, etc, would I do that first on perhaps the base raw file in Lightroom, sync all those adjustments to the additional files, and then bring those into photoshop for final blending? I've never had good direction on what is lost once you save a composite image in photoshop. I have always been afraid that the resulting TIFF or PSD loses a lot data that exists in the raw files and adjustments in a resulting composite file are limited.
yes, I usually just do all of the rough adjustment in Lightroom and then synch those adjustments on all of the images before opening them as layers. Once Ive done the time blends as illustrated I'll then finish the image off in PS. I flatten the photo and save as a TIFF or if Im not sure if the image is finished as a large file with all of the layers in tact. Everyone has their own way of doing things but this has worked fine for me.
Hi Adam, how are you starting the process. If I open in photoshop, it opens in Adobe raw, then opens in photoshop after I've made basic adjustments. Should I be opening my images in lightroom, or lightroom classic, or? Because my current option doesn't have all the available options all you guy's seem to have with opening multiple images and so on
I usually start with an image in Lightroom. Once you’ve done some basic work on the images, select all, right click and you should see an option to open as layers in PS.
Shoot JPG's, Keep an eye out for what the light is doing, experiment with filters. Think about it, film was around for many years before computers and many great images came from film and still do without any computer editing. Learn your craft, learn about light, composition.

Wow, you weren't kidding Adam! Massive thanks for this masking tutorial.
Thank you. Great tutorial.

Love your Adam. Great tips and video
Great tutorial thanks
Great tips on masking. Simple but refreshing. Not sure about the trousers though lol
Thanks Adam for showing how relatively easy it is to blend those layers , just need to remember to use that method in the field

A great explanation!

Thank you for a brilliant tutorial! What a beautiful image you have created of a fabulous location.

Thanks. Masking is hard for me so the more times I see it done well the better.
Great video, your explanation of the blending process, in the field and in post opened up new possibilities. Many thanks,
Glad it was helpful!
This was great, Adam. Thanks. Post processing couldn't have been explained any clearer.
