It must be a privilege to have a great great grandfather who was as fine as that on the fiddle. Tommy Jarrell is one of my ultimate favorites, cheers to you.
I love stuff like this! People that love to play just getting together for front porch jam sessions. My uncle and his sons used to get together and just play for hours in his drive way. The neighborhood folks would come out and sit in their front yards and porches just to listen. My Uncle Dean passed away this summer, 2014. I dont think there has been a guitar, fiddle, or banjo played since then. They lived in Blue Springs Missouri.
This summer we're teaching this and a bunch of other American fiddle tunes to a group of teenage beginners and orchestral violinists. It'll be fun. I'm stoked. It's great to be looking back 40 years at this session and looking forward to new players in July.
Just remind them that this is the perfect music for those who are uncomfortable with it! It was made for fun and for relaxing and not for perfect performances.
That's great-do you play old time music. i try but I'm from California, not Galax, VA, ah ha ha. I really like clawhammer banjo and fiddling. Genuine American music. Ya! I saw Seeger play banjo at a festivl once and had his dvd on banjo styles, and in the seventies I listened to Tommy Jarrel on record and copped some of his songs. I love this music.
The old gentleman in the hat seems pretty baffled by all that sound coming from the four-stringed devil :) Actually, with that concentration, I wouldn't be surprised if he's a fiddler, too.
That banjo player is top tier too, love his playing.
This is my great great grandpa!

Cripple Creek ran through my Great Uncle Andrew Lindsey Porter’s front yard in Speedwell, VA. Love to know if that is the one the song is about.
I'm pretty sure this tune refers to cripple creek running through Virginia, so yes it is
why did people downvote this?
Jackson's in the valley... :)
This fiddle player is cooler than all modern pop musicians rolled together.
not really, this shit was kinda lame

I read Frank's name spelled Bode on the Frank Bode LP album cover. Bode is pronounced "Bodie".
