More like the industry and a shitty dealer happened. Had nothing to do with a girl.
He was into drugs well before he became famous or the Ariana situation. Just listen to his Faces mixtape. It was made well before their relationship and is basically the diary of a drug addicted artist.
Trying to live up to expectations intensified the drug use until he got slipped the wrong shit.

I could see if he only started talked about being a drug addict once she entered his life or left it, but that's simply not the case.
