  • In this second episode of Brandon's Book Club, our five guests continue their journey through Part 4 of Tress of the Emerald Sea.
We return, once again, to Tress's magical world as she embarks on her next adventure. Each guest dives into the ways that Tress's decisions in the third part have altered the course of her ship, so to speak, and how she develops as a character in the process.
We hope you'll continue to join us for all five episodes as we dive deeper into the mysteries of this realm.

I'm not sure if you will see this comment, but I just wanted to say that I have started my journey with reading your books. I learnt about you when someone recommended your writing lectures. It seems like really great advice you were giving so it sounded like you probably had something worth reading, and you did! I am just starting out with mistborn and I am nearly through the second book.
I listen to your books as audiobooks and only allow myself to listen while doing housework so that a horrible chore becomes a treat, and if I want to know what happens next I better get folding laundry. Let me just say my house has never been so clean!

One thing I REALLY respect is that (presumably) you told the folks here to be honest. Even when there is valid criticism towards your books, such as the humor, or the tosher story, it appears that they feel comfortable talking about what they didn't like about the book even in your own home.
Thank you for actually encouraging critical discussion over your books! No book is perfect, and dialogue about what didn't work for you as a reader, even if its your favorite book, is extremely important! Its honestly probably what makes you stand out as an author above the rest (aside from your narrative voice and stories).

There would not be tides because the moons are not moving in relation to the planet's surface. Well, there would be a slight tide from the star but much less. There would be slight permanent differences in "sea" levels from directly under a moon to directly between two moons along the equator. Sort of like an undulation except they don't move, it's static. It's an unmoving sine wave wrapping around the planet.

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 Год назад +2

@@adhd_projects Yep. My post was already getting long so didn't want to add to the confusion but yes there would likely be squat mounds under each moon from the incoming spores. Sort of like bumps on the peak of each sine wave.
Also, the peaks and troughs (amplitude) of the wave would be greatest at the equator (assuming the moons are around the equator, would be really weird if they weren't) gradually tapering off to zero at the poles. Though I suspect things like wind, liquefaction, etc. would smooth it out to essentially zero way before the poles. The wavelength of the sine wave would be 1/12th of the average circumference of the planet.
And finally, could a physicist chime in on something? I'm wondering if the peaks of the wave actually line up directly under each moon or would the planet's rotation cause them to be offset either ahead of or behind each moon?

On the note of convenient events, I felt the same while reading it, but on thinking about it critically I've decided it's actually one of the keys to achieving that fairytale quality. And think about the stories we all tell, not as authors but as humans - what usually makes a good story that you just have to tell your friends and family? I can almost guarantee you that that sense of convenient coincidence will be at the centre of your story, will be what makes it so compelling and relatable, because we've all had those moments where everything just weirdly aligned in our favour (or against us!)

For the whole book I was waiting for that pewter tankard to come in play with spores, right after I saw how aluminium protects spores...
From the moment I read about roseit for the first time I was thinking about Whitesand and how similar it seem while also clearly being different in a lot of ways. And the fact there's only 12 moons we saw so far and not, like, for example 16, you know?...

@@adhd_projects if I remember correctly 16 is an arbitrary pattern for the cosmere. Hoid could have taken a shard making the pattern 17, but he was a smart lil immortal. There could be 16 aether's, but if there was that would be unrelated to the 16 shards as the power being split into 16 was an active choice by the original shards, and not a byproduct of the fundamentals laws of the universe

@@LegosSnake I don’t think that’s true. I’m pretty sure that hoid could have taken a shard but didn’t and Ati (maybe odium?) took up the shard he was going to. Welp. Another great episode I missed seeing live because reasons. Oh well.
People already talked about the lunagrees a bit, so that part's covered. I survived the tosher and was pretty indifferent to it, but the people in my own reading group can attest to that I went crazy over the whole worldbuilding - really too bad that we only got to see some spores and not all of them.
As for talking rats and familiars - Brandon actually said in past WoBs that it's possible to make an animal sapient by infusing it with a lot of Investiture. This gave birth to the Lord Beaver, the Slothquisitors (and catquisitors), and quite possibly a handful of other weird stuff on the 17th Shard.
Also, dragons! Due to my reading process I get to read about the dragon itself next week, that's going to be fun!
I'll go with the experimentation as favourite part, probably, and the King's Mask as least favourite - I appreciate sicerity over giving people false hopes.

It could also be like solubility. Oil and water don't mix well and a fairly defined separation would exist. However, the gravitational pull of the moon on the spores would need to be similar from each moon on the spores to prevent some forced mixing. The spores would also need to be of a similar density to prevent them from layering on top of each other.

I’m confused about the geosynchronous moons. For something to be geosynchronous it needs to be along the equatorial plane and it needs to orbit the planet at the same rate as the planet spins. But the moons are not on the equatorial plane meaning they can’t all be geo synchronous. At least not in the traditional sense. I just chalk it up to magic but real orbital mechanics don’t work this way.
