I am not from UK, so its not local diving for me. I got hooked on Cyprus and Malta but I did my OWD here in Poland in our cold and dark lakes. I have to say that I absolutely love it, it’s an entirely different kind of diving and I was worried that it might be boring. It’s not! I highly recommend it to anyone. It’s a bit cold and dark that’s true but it’s an amazing experience. So happy to finally make this scuba dream come true! Take care everybody :)

Good video :) I live in the South West of Victoria in Australia. The winter sea temperature where I live is around 11 to 12 degrees C (colder in fresh water); tip: wear two hoods in winter and one in summer :) Also a big yes to being involved with cleaning up our water ways - I really enjoy doing this now days, and not just at home but now has extended to when we dive in other locations too :) I'm glad your promoting to dive in your local area - thank you :) We don't have the fame of the Great Barrier Reef, however when people see our videos of what is in this part of Australia they are quite surprised of how nice it is.

As a diver from Bretagne (France), I agree. Although we've got less visibility than other warm water sites, we've got great marine life. It's just harder to spot, that's all. And once you're experienced with muddy waters where you can barely see your outstretched arm (worst case), you look like an alien to mediterranean-dwelling divers! "Viz was good, almost five meters!" - Med diver: "I couldn't see anything, I almost had a panic attack!"

Where is it possible to dive in the Bretagne? I would love to go on a holiday there!

@@emmylee8862 On the south coast, you've got the gulf of Morbihan, Etel, Belle-île, the bay of Lorient, the Glénan islands. West coast: Bay of Douarnenez, Brest, Ouessant. North: Saint Malo. A lot of good diving spots! I'll always recommend my home spot: Larmor-Plage, situated near Lorient. There's a lot of shipwrecks from both world wars and others at depths between 6 and 56 meters. One must see is the wreck of the U-171, a german U-boat, that is one of the most accessible in the whole country (38 meters).

I live and dive in the Netherlands and would love to go diving in the UK when it's possible. But where should I go to. Any recommendations?

Cornwall. I live here so I might be biased, but way out here we get some fantastic viz, and a very high diversity of life - seals, blue sharks, basking sharks, mola mola, some fantastic corals. I was born in England but one of the reasons I moved to Cornwall was specifically to get back into diving. I wasn't disappointed! The other good thing about Cornish diving is that we have North, South and West coasts, all very close to each other (you can drive accross Cornwall north to south in under an hour) so if the weather isn't playing nice on one coast, the other will prob be OK.
We don't have inland sites like you get in England, but we do have some very sheltered salt water sites - so much so that new trainees here often don't learn in a pool - their first dive may be on a WW1 submarine, or a rocky reef full of soft corals and jewel anemones. It's a very special place and I love it with all my heart.
Our waters are still temperate, but compared the Netherlands you'll find them a bit warmer (people from Scotland and the east coast of England also find the same). Right now, it's around 12-13c, and we'll get up to around 16c in August/September.
On the downside, be aware that UK diving has really suffered since the rise of low cost flights in the late 90s/early 00s. Here in Cornwall we've lost several good dive shops and charter boats, so getting fills and things now isn't as easy as it was. If you do come to Cornwall, base yourself in Falmouth, Helston or Newquay, otherwise you'll be spending a lot of time finding a place to get gas fills.

@@lmlmd2714 wow thanks for this. Normally I just get a city or region when I ask something like this. This made me very enthusiastic. I will definitely check this out when I can. Thanks.

I’m living in Istanbul and local diving is definitely excellent thing, nearest dive boat is just 15 minutes away from my home with train and this allows diving more frequently with small budget

Yeah, it does seem to be a European thing. I've seen them in Ireland as well - but never in Australia, South East Asia or the Red Sea. They're a brilliant idea, I don't know why other places haven't copied them.

I feel like SOOOO many ppl have this opinion that lake diving is boring scary or that there isn’t anything to see! Here in land locked southern Arizona we dive ALL YEAR ROUND in our local lakes there’s actually a lot to see! Everything from busses to sailboats even a cj7 Jeep! Not to mention the MASSIVE carp and cat fish everywhere! I’m talking fish as big as I am! I also love that after a fresh water dive I can just quickly rinse my stuff I don’t have to worry about salt corrosion oh and mask removal and replacement is much easier in fresh water (no burning eyes)

ive been diving for over 30 yrs now and apart from the recent pandemic i havent stopped now things are returning to normal i am not only getting back in but teaching my son and together we will be diving pordominently the uk as its diversity is awsome as already described the seal encounters are amazing as are the basking sharks! . The wrecks around the UK are too awesome with so much marine life to see and encounter. The best thing i like about diving the UK is that you never know what you will likely to see as there is always something different........So If you are reading this and considering the uk give it a go as like me you wont be dissappointed!
    thanks good vid !

What locations are the coral reefs in the UK?

    • @lmlmd2714
      @lmlmd2714 3 года назад

It's often confusing, as we have two types:
      1. "Cold-water coral reefs" - These are deep reefs, beyond diving range, and are totally different species of reef building corals that don't have any photosynthetic algae. The science guys love them but we never see them.
      2. Soft corals - these aren't reef builders, but live *on* rocky reefs (and wrecks). You find them all around the UK, but they are most diverse and common in the south-west (Cornwall, SW England and SW Wales). Finger Corals are extremely common, but we also have two gorgonian (sea fan) species, and various cup corals, some very rare. They aren't as spectacular as their red sea counterparts, but they are beautiful, interesting and very photogenic, especially in macro. As a rule of thumb, anywhere in the south-west with decent rocky reefs that provide a mix of shelter from storms and exposure to currents is going to be good for corals.
I'd say nothing individually about diving here is world class, or even remarkable in and of itself, but the fact we have a bit of everything from seals to sharks to corals to crustaceans, seagrass meadows, kelp forests and so on makes it crazy diverse.
