Congrats on the promotion! 🚀✨ I'm always so happy to see how having grit can help anyone without a CS degree to become the best engineers. I am a self-taught software engineer myself, with a background in molecular biology, so I could be biased but I truly believe that from my own observations 😁 It's great to see these stories that can motivate others to follow their dreams. Tudo de bom para 2023!
About what you said, that you get burned by NOT working on / doing things that matter to you, I can assure you of that first hand. There was a period in my life that I was working ridiculously hard at work for 7 months in a row and after that period passed, I realized that I got burned out not by too much work but by missing out on friends, my hobbies, working out, taking care of myself, going to the cinema, etc. Things I have always loved doing. So the lesson was, you can work hard but ALWAYS make room for other things that you love doing.
Hi, Jackie. I hope you enjoyed the sun, the food and the family at Christmas. Desejo um bom 2023 com muito amor, saúde e prosperidade (💶 😂). See you on next video.
Enjoyed your video from Korea~! Your progression also instills me that I can enter the workforce as a self-taught in the future. I keep doing my best:) p.s. Portugal looks beautiful and warm👍
congrats for the promotion Jackie! I follow you since had like 7k followers on IG and it's amazing how you are been growing in this time. Saludos desde Mexico!
Hey Jackie, try waking up earlier but gradually! I find that when I need to switch my sleep schedule, waking up earlier by 15 to 20 minutes every day until I reach the wake up time I want works the best for me. Abraços e boas entradas de Sintra!
Congratulations for your promotion and your home town is soooo beautiful Also please make a video to how to be consistent By the way love your content keep it up 👍 my dream company is also Amazon and I am currently learning DSA and presuming diploma in computer science next year I will be 18 and I hope I get internship at big MNC like Amazon thanks your videos give me motivation to study 😊😊
I'm at home (Germany) for the holidays and I can't imagine working from my parents house for more than a week. The WiFi is sooo bad, I can't even pull a repository haha. How do manage that in Portugal?
haha omg really? that would be too frustrating. luckily the Wifi is great at my parent's house, they probably did it on purpose to make us come back :p what area are you from?
@@techmentormaria oh that’s so exciting 😊 how are you enjoying it? I always wanted to live in the big cities in my 20s, but slowly starting to get tired of it now, thinking of moving out of the city in a few years :) but NYC must be an amazing experience 🥺❤️
7:18 in Italy a latte/cappuccino/anything similar at lunch or even after is considered a serious crime (lol, jk), second only to pineapple on pizza. Maybe we don't do code reviews, maybe we skip tests, but no milky coffee drinks after late morning is an absolute rule to follow🤣 Congrats for the promotion! 👌
7:56 Best way to code review is to write test cases. Then if all of those pass skim the code for anythign that stands out and use pycharm for example to fix formatting so its all uniform. After that send to dev or staging and do some random testing and that should be enough. You can always just push it and hope it doesnt fuck up the hole program.
Congrats on the promotion. Do you normally work from a laptop? Or do you normally have a different setup? I usually run two 28" 4k monitors with my left one in Portrait orientation for writing code. I always feel so restricted when I'm traveling and have to work from a laptop screen.
I work from an ultrawide monitor at home, and on the laptop if im remote (which is rarely) 😊 I agree that it’s complicated to work only a laptop long term!
I will never understand why a lot of people does this: work at a FAANG, making tons of money BUT not investing on having a proper environment to work at home (desk, chair, monitor, keyboard & mouse, lamp) and instead just use a random chair and a small laptop
Code reviews are somewhat difficult for me too , especially when I need to suggest an improvement. There’s some fear of making the person under review feel uncomfortable
Helo I really like your videos and I would love to know why you went to England and how you learned English as a Portuguese. Thank you for what you do, you are an inspiration!
Thank you 😊 I started reading a lot of books in English while at Uni, which helped me in improving my grammar and vocabulary! I moved to the UK for a new job 😊
Hi Jackie, I am going almost through the same path you have gone through. I am Electrical Engineer holding a master degree, but my work forced me to start learning some software development and I really enjoyed it and joined a bootcamp earlier this year. May I ask you if you had any experience as a Software developer before you joined FAANG?
Hey, that’s great! 😊 wish you great success! Yes I did a year of software development before starting at Amazon, but it was at the same company that hired me as a grad aerospace engineer, so it was a natural/smooth transition for me because they needed people with coding skills and I kind of grew into the role over my grad scheme by picking data science / software development focused departments
Wow, I guess Electrical Engineering is awesome, should be interesting. I'm actually looking to major in Computer Engineering which is supposed to be half CS half EE (Electrical Engineering).
Work life balance é a parte dificil de ser engenheiro de software, mas, a dica que dou depois de 23 anos programando é não ser a pessoa pro ativa e se policiar em nao se comprometer demais. Less is more ..
SDE1 can be entry level or junior, whereas SDE2 can be mid or senior :) I’d consider myself a middle level engineer. After a few years in the role, an SDE2 usually maps to senior engineer at other companies (Amazon has less levels so it’s more difficult to compare, one has to look at the role descriptions). Hope it helps! :)
There's a short book called “What to Look for in a Code Review” from JetBrains employee. Even though it's short, I got valuable insides about different code review styles and especially it described Ping-Pong reviews which caused my burnout. Hope it helps!
@@CSJackie once our startup crypto exchange takes off (I'm based in New York City), I plan on applying for a second residency for Portugal via their Golden visa citizenship by investment program.
