    The master of loco repairs. Great job Bill and I must admit you have a canny eye on spotting the problems that get sent to you for repair. I've bought a few iffy locos at toy fairs and do get a sense of achievement in turning the model around to make it a good runner.

    Some venders don't have a test track, so it is up to the buyer to treat the product as a non-runner cause seller's want to sell and some will say anything. My day brightens up when I see that you have posted more content so know that no matter what it is we will take the journey with you. Great little repair and glad you got a break.

    I agree Bill, during COVID lockdowns I bought several locomotives from different sellers advertised as good runners. They may have been good runners before they went into storage (I am being charitable here) but all needed stripping and servicing two I retired as being too poor. I now only buy secondhand locos from my local model shop, I know he tests them and can show me them running. Cheers Peter from downunder.

    It's always amusing to see what kind things you'll find when preparing or servicing a used locomotive. Having a DCC chip cut from its harness and left in is certainly another one to add to the list.

    That fixed valve gear is a representation of the original prototype’s Lentz rotary cam valve gear which is simplified / cheaper for the Railroad range. The front pony truck is a pain, that design is also on the L1 and it is a liability. Good loco for you a P2 Bill, they were built for the Edinburgh to Aberdeen road and gave great service until they were rebuilt as Pacifics in the mid 1940s.

    • @FlyingScott
      @FlyingScott 2 месяца назад +2

      As Pacifics, the former P2s (now A2/2s!) still gave great service, just down south. The P2 design was so faulty that not only was it either a rebuild or scrapping, it made the LNER realise that they actually had never needed an eight-coupled loco for the Aberdeen route - V2s, B1s and even the W1 proved to have been sufficient all along!

    • @simonturner5450
      @simonturner5450 2 месяца назад +3

       I agree, my point was that they no longer gave that service in Scotland as they were reallocated south once rebuilt in the 40s. Thompson’s main objective was to reduce the complexity of Gresley’s conjugated valve gear to improve reliability and he replaced the leading pony which had shown a tendency to crack with a bogie. It’ll be interesting to see how the new build Prince of Wales gets on when that comes into service.

      Hello FS. Being a subscriber to your channel and having watched many of your (excellent) videos, I'm not surprised by your support of Thompson's P2 rebuilding prpgramme. And even though I KNOW you'll disagree, Gresley's P2s were far better looking than Thompson's A2s, IMO. Happy modelling. @FlyingScott

    • @simonturner5450

      @@stephendavies6949 FS would be correct to support Thompson. For too long Thompson has been underrated. His brief was to improve locomotive availability and capability during difficult wartime conditions and he succeeded magnificently in both tasks.

      @simonturner5450 I couldn't agree more. I've written similar words myself. But his Pacifics were ugly spuds, IMO. I do like the B1s, however.

    Always carry a 9v block battery when visiting flea markets or train fairs. You will be able to see straight away if the seller’s telling you porky’s or not 😂. A really nice loco. Easily justifiable on your Scottish layout Bill!

    An excellent find Bill; sometimes it’s the simplest of unfamiliar items that cause the problem. Yep a blank plate that wasn’t a blank plate. Something to remember when at a toy fair or market is carry a 9v battery, ask if it’s ok to test. At least you know it runs or not. This one was hard to understand as an intermittent runner - non runner from start. Truely enjoyed the running session; need a few more of these when n if you have time. Looking forward to next video; all very best Marc from Leighton Buzzard

    As a thought are the 'fake' cranks used so that the all flanged wheels can accommodate the curves of less than scale radius without being restricted by the inflexible side rods, this being even more useful in small radius crossovers?

    Hi Bill, I have one of these & was surprised to find the rear bogie doesn't boogie in the traditional way. Its fixed, a strange thing to do on a loco with 4 large drivers. What did you think to its cornering? Thankfully there are no flanges on the rear bogie wheels.

    Best intentions by whoever thought cutting the DCC chip and wires from the plate would make it work. I have wondered though, is it a big job to solder the wires across in that case where they left the remains of the chip to make it a homemade blanking plate?

      These represent a set of Mark 1 carriages painted in a special livery based on the LNER "tourist" colours for steam-hauled trains on the West Highland in the 1980s. The train in 1985-87 was TSO’s 4050, 4494, 4610, 4623, 4643 and BSO 9312. It had the branding ‘West Highland’ and ‘ScotRail’ on the side of the coaches all coach numbers were prefixed SC.
      There is an album of these carriages on Flickr, entitled "West Highland LNER Green: a gallery curated by DavidG901". Coach 4494 is a holiday cottage by Loch Awe station, still in green and cream.

    In Britan do they call 2-8-2's Mikado's or Mikes like they do in the states? I know you call 4-6-2's Pacific's. And what does Black 5 mean? Is it just a 4-6-0? Just learning about the British stuff.

      Yup we call 2-8-2 mikados as well, Black 5's are a class of locomotive made for the LMS. We call 2-6-0s moguls but we don't really have a name for 4-6-0s 👍
