  • Telemann - Lukas Passion
    Soprano : Uta Spreckelsen
    Orchestra/choir/conductor : Frankfurter Madrigal-Ensemble, Hessisches Kammerorchester Frankfurt/Siegfried Heinrich
    Wie sich ein winz'ges Lüftchen regt,
    wie sich ein Blatt des Baums bewegt,
    so zitterd und bebet ein böses Gewissen.
    Doch ist das Herz vom Vorwurf rein,
    so laß die Bosheit immer schrein,
    sie wird zuletz verstummen müssen.
    How a tiny breeze stirs,
    how a leaf of the tree moves,
    that's how an evil conscience trembles and shakes.
    But if the heart is clean from reproach
    let malice always cry out,
    it will have to fall silent at last.
    It's an old recording (1973) of Telemann's Lukas Passion and I guess it's the only one. Either way, it features the beautiful voice of soprano Uta Spreckelsen amongst others.
    In spite of some of the text in this particular aria sounding like rap avant la lettre :p her voice is clear and she sings melodies with involvement, clarity and precision; even though she can sing with power and conviction, it never strays into a territory of musically inept histrionics as is sometimes the case with other soprano singers.
    I came to know and admire her singing through a piece by Vivaldi: Canta in Prato in A major RV623.. there are some more modern recordings of that piece with perhaps more interplay with the orchestra (and better recorded/reproduced sonically) but the singing itself.. I keep coming back to hers and think she's the best in that particular piece.
    This nice piece by Telemann shows his knack for catchiness in rhythm and boldness in harmony.
