My wonderful BikeE CT RoadE edition recumbent bike

- Just wanted to do a quick overview of my unbelievably good early 1990s BikeE CT RoadE Edition recumbent bike. I got it for $50 from a family in Capitol Hill and the only repairs it needed were a new rear tire, derailleur adjustment, and lubrication. It is 21 speed thanks to the ingenious combination of a 3 speed internally geared hub and a 7 speed cassette. It's both comfortable and fast due to the seat and narrow ISO 451 rear/ISO 349 front tires, respectively. Future videos will show how I look riding the bike and hopefully some helmet GoPro footage. I forgot to mention BikeE existed until 2002 in Corvallis, Oregon, home of one of my other favorite pieces of innovative engineering, the HP DOS palmtops! The HP calculator division was located in Corvallis.
I’m going to beef up the swing arm, install a 1500-2000w hub motor kit and build a cheap electric cruiser out of the one I just bought for $100.
😊😊😊😊😊 Someone got rid of one, tires shot, chain rusted, wd-40😊, need replacement rail holders. 😊
Congrats and welcome to the bike E family.
They were manufactured in Corvallis, Oregon, and I bought my first maroon AT model (has an air shock on a swing rear axle) 2 years ago.
I have since gotten another AT that is newer with disc brakes and a 2 speed shift on the front sprocket instead of the back, though the rear cassette I believe has 9 gears, as well as a Tandem bike E CT that seats two riders.
Looking forward to more videos. Best wishes and ride safe.
Sweet! Thanks! Yes, I can't wait to ride up to Frederick and Baltimore.
They're great bikes.
Converting one into an e-bike (looking at a cyc pro gen 2 mid drive). A nice fat 20x2.0 60psi tire on back, 16x1.75 50psi tire on the front.
Nice! A BikeE EBike hehe. Sounds like a comfortable ride with those big low pressure tires. Mine are narrow (20x1.25 back and 16x1.25 front) and both at 90 psi.
Good morning! I'm actually going to buy my first recumbent, BikeE this afternoon. Looks to be in great shape. Lady is asking $140. Currently I ride a 90's model Specialized road bike but I hear recumbents are great fun. Any regrets with yours?
Morning, Joe! That sounds like a good price, especially if it's in good condition. I don't think I have any regrets besides not checking the seat to make sure it locks better. Beware that newer BikeEs have a problem with seat sliders cracking, which could lead to the seat sliding off the frame while riding. You can get replacements for $20 if I remember right. I would say the one disadvantage of a recumbent is climbing is difficult and after a very long ride you tend to get really bad leg fatigue. Otherwise, the ride is incredibly safe and comfortable, and drivers seem to like a bike that looks like a car much more ;-)
@@walnuthills11 thank you! It is actually in almost perfect condition. It's been garage kept so it needs a good cleaning. The guy I bought it from only rode it twice. He fell the first time and didn't want it anymore. I rode it a bit yesterday and it was very smooth and the shifting was smooth as well. This just might replace my road bike. Due to my posture, my hands fall asleep after a few miles.
I just picked up a very lightly used unit for $120. Thx for the info.
Congratulations! You are welcome. Enjoy riding!
Hi, any idea how much the bike weighs please? Thanks.
I am not quite sure but I would guess 25-27 lbs. Certainly lighter than my electroforged Schwinn.
I just got one and I like it for the small rides I've taken it on. I have a spring shock coming for mine because my ad5 is too damaged to rebuild.
Threw come walmart kids tires that are slightly wider and she carves well, super responsive!
Nice, I love the ride of mine as well!!
How did that spring shock work out, and which is it of it worked well? I have the same problem with my old AT.
Can you adjust the seat recline?
Sadly not on this model. Maybe on one of the others (RX, AT, etc.).
I didn’t think so. That’s a deal breaker for me.
@@benwhite3227 Oh OK! Sorry to hear this won't work. Hopefully a Rans, Sun, or Vision has an adjustable seat back. Good luck!
@@walnuthills11 Yeah, my bikes and trike all have adjustable seats. Most recumbent bikes have adjustable seat backs, but some trikes use part of the frame as the seat back frame. Thanks for the video and telling me about the seat.
@@benwhite3227 No problem, any time!
How fast is she?
15-16 mph average on country roads!! Pretty sweet.
@@walnuthills11 There's one for sale for $300 and I love speed. Ever see how fast it goes on pavement? Just wondering if they go pretty fast to justify buying it.
@@deltafour1212 The quoted speed is on bike lanes and two lane country roads with little traffic. Also note this bike has narrow road tires as it's the RoadE edition.
@@walnuthills11 Is that speed when you're trying to go fast or just a casual peddle?
@@deltafour1212 15 mph is a casual pedal for me. 20-25 mph is pedaling hard in the highest gear. 30-35 mph is pedaling hard down a hill. Going up a small hill is 8-12 mph and going up a steep hill is 6-8 mph.
