I remember watching this on TV as a teenager, it made an impact because I was born in Cowra and my mum remembered the breakout. Thank you for the upload 👍
Brilliant series, very old school Aussie, thanks. A tragedy so much has been butchered from the dvd release in the name of PC. Late 1970s and 1980s were high water mark of Aussie TV.
Haven't seen this since they showed us thing in Cowra High back in the early 90s. I use to live like half a K from the prison sight back in the 80s and would go for walks there a lot before it all got fenced off. Had to do a model and paper about the camp. For some reason I forgot to do the model and was told I would get very low to no marks for messing up. I was given extra time to build one, but told for each day I was late, I would lose one point (20 was top score) My parents let me stay home the next day and I worked my butt off. I went to the site with my mum and drew the camp in accurate 2D detail. Found some old chip wood board as the base, got some nails and fishing line to simulate the fence. Bought some play dough, made each hut and quarters to the right shape with roofs, glued them in the right spot to match my sketch, and was so embarrassed how cheap it looked with like 5 different coloured dough, I got an old white spray can and painted the huts. Most turned white, but the red ones turned pink and blue sky colour and stuck out like a sore thumb no matter how much paint I put. Sprinkled some sand on the wet paint to simulate the ground, did it all in one day with my parents disappointed in me for not doing it sooner when I was supposed to. It was about 24 x 24 inches, I walked it to school the next morning from my house. Saw my history teacher as I walked through the car lot, said "I am so sorry, this is as good as I could do it in one day." His eyes lit up, he was so happy with it, later in class we had like 15 or so models on display, some were super expensive and painted nicely, but mine was the only one to equal scaling and positioning of each hut and fence and grounds, which I was surprised. I got called up and praised by my teacher in front of the class and got the full 20 points. I was asked a week later by the Cowra exhibition committee if my model could be donated for display for a while at the committee museum, I was still so embarrassed by the pink huts I almost said no, but there it stayed for a while (a year I think or a few months). Looking back, I wish I took more pride in my accomplishment. I didn't even know I hit a home run.
This is not the real Part 1. It's actually the second part of the original series. The first part on YT is titled 'Cowra Breakout New Guinea Story'. It should not be missed. Not only does it give the back story of the two main characters, it's a brilliant piece of television.
I can’t remember if this was ever shown on UK TV. Many Australian series were of course. Vietnam and Bangkok Hilton come to mind as debut vehicles for Nicole Kidman. Anyway thanks for downloading looks interesting.
I did actually upload them. Links.. Part 2: ruclips.net/video/n5Z_fojMewY/видео.html&ab_channel=TankengineGames The Backstory: ruclips.net/video/z0d3CVST6qo/видео.html&ab_channel=TankengineGames
I don't know if this was shown with 4 or 10 episodes in Australia but in some places it was definitely 10 episodes. Wikipedia says each episode was 1 hour but I think it was probably closer to 50min. So the VHS and DVD releases are missing at least a couple of hours of footage and they also cropped the image from 4:3 into widescreen (at least on DVD) and changed the opening title sequence. The DVD back cover even says 'digitally remastered and re-versioned'.
17:51....AND ARE YOU SURE THAT BACK THEN, YOU FOLKS, HAD ABORIGINES SERVING WITHIN THE AUSSIE RANKS....AND IN SUCH EASY GOING MODE?!....I DON'T KNOW GUYS...I JUST DPN'Y KNOW. I MEAN.....SOMETHING IN THIS FILM, REGARDING THE DETAILS, IN VARIOUS THINGS, SIMPLY DOESN'T FIT IN RIGHT!...WITH...OR WITHOUT THE INFAMOUS ABORIGINE ACTOR WHO PLAYED AT "CROCODILE DUNDEE" BY THE WAY! (...Or do you honestly thought, we couldn't recognise him?! Obviously he is Bill Sandy, portraying "Teddy" in there! Don't worry...we might be Greeks - from mainland Greece that is - but even we, happen to know a thing or two, here and there, about the Aussie film industry!)
Way too much editing. No where near as good as Original. Even the DVD has been butchered. One of the original characters in the very first episode has been entirely removed from the series..

Many thanks for posting. Can't believe it. After all these years.

Very nice story! It's quite interesting, but I'd have to agree that accuracy is more important than looks. Good job mate! Bloody good story.
@@tankengine8889 Thank you very much. Thanks for sharing the movies.
Thanks for the upload. This was a 4 part mini series. So much has been edited out from the original show
Wow! Is this episode 1? Thank you for uploading.
WOw, this has been such a long time. Thank you for the upload.
Wow thank you I have been looking for this for a long time, since 1991
All good mate.
I already have copy of this on DVD, but like this one, it has been butchered by the editor. There's about an hour cut from the original mini-series.
This part is nº2

I posted them in reverse order funnily enough.
@@tankengine8889 Whichever way you posted them, they're very much appreciated. Thank you. Best Australian mini-series I've ever seen.

The actress who plays Sally Murphy has a look of Olga Kurylenco

That's a shame how they remove snippets, it's a good miniseries... But it makes me wonder what they cut. Anyways thank you for finding that out.
Maybe the scenes that were edited out were the ones that showed Stan as a complete winching wimp.
Me too thanks a million...
Best aussie film ever!

SUBTITRARE IN LIMBA ROMANA.
What is the moral of this story. Cowra is a better place for Japanese to work and live than most Japanese corporations.
