Late 2009, 27 inch iMac can use 32 GB of 1333 MHz RAM, beyond what Apple says

- Apple says iMacs from late 2009, like my 27 inch iMac (Model Identifier iMac11,1), can only use a maximum of 16 GB of 1066 MHz RAM. But I found you can use twice that limit with slightly faster RAM. So if you are in the market for RAM, this hack seems to work.
*UPDATE June, 21 2015*
Still going strong with this RAM. No issues to report.
*UPDATE August, 7 2015*
Once again, the RAM is still working great. No issues.

Love you, man! I have 27-inch Apple iMac - Late 2009 and it's still in great condition, but too slow to process 4K video. After scouring for a long time to implore a solution, instead spending thousands, finding this is a godsend! Thank you!
did you tried? use this one the pc3-10600 1333mhz ddr3 so-dimm, i saw someone did but 2 years ago and the osx was old and now i guess you same as me you running high sierra. i want to upgrade it too but i don't know if risk on that or just go with pc3-8500 (1066Mhz) ddr3 i know that's the one that really works cause is the one i have but if i can have a bit more of boost i will interest it too. So if you try please could you let me know? Kind regards.
Hello Kyle. How did it went? Did it work fine for you?
@@Fajrspirita Yes, it did. Made it slightly faster. So it’s worth doing it for the older iMacs! 👍😎
@@KyleCorwith thanks. I have the exact model that came before (21,5-inch 10,1 iMac, Late 2009) and I hope it will work with mine too.
@@KyleCorwith hey, but I've been reading this page (that was shared by the youtuber) and now I wonder which one is your model exactly: everymac.com/actual-maximum-mac-ram/actual-maximum-imac-ram-capacity.html
It seems there are several 27-inch iMacs from Late 2009, and some of them don't accept the 32 GB of RAM. Which processor is the one in your iMac (Core 2 Duo, i5 or i7)?
Anyway, according to that page none of my possibilities accepts the 32 GB of RAM :(
For anyone scrounging for info on compatibility, I also have a late 2009 27" iMac Core i5 11,1 currently working fine after a month with 4 Crucial 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz PC3L-12800 sticks. I had a brainfart and ordered the wrong ram, but tried it anyways, and so far so good. The system reports it as 1333Mhz DDR3.
what macOS was your machine running? friend
It works on the C2D 21,5"too. But you need to use only 3 of the 4 slots to use 1333Mhz, I guess it's just that the logic board supports 4264 MHz in total and using 3 slots at 1333Mhz each, you get 3999MHz. (DIM 0-0 goes the main ram, DIM 0-1 FREE / DIM 1-0 and DIM 1-1 the other two memories).
I bought OWC RAM for my 2009 i5 iMAC and I was able to upgrade to 32GB. Works perfectly! I used
2 of OWC 16GB (2x 8GB) 1333Mhz PC3-10600 DDR3 SO-DIMM 204-Pin Memory Upgrade Kit.
I'm running
OSX 10.10.5 (14F2511)
Doug Winter how is your computer running now ? I'm about to do the same but with less memory 4gigs total ( 2X 2GB ) also did you notice a difference in your computer when you did the upgrade ?
Hi Sergio -- My iMAC is running very well. It runs like a new machine. I can edit video on it now. I'd get more than 4 GB of memory for your iMAC -- I'd go to at least 8GB.
obrigado , tenho um de 2013 late o unico com processador não soldado , estou a fazer o upgrade para 32gb de ram e 2 tb de SSD
what. os x are you using now
I think the difference between the model you got and cheaper crucial model for the mac may be the latency of the memory, not 100% sure but almost certain that's what makes the price difference, so you probably got a memory with a lower latency than the one for mac, thanks for sharing I think I'll do the same with a used iMAC late 2009 I just bought from a neighbor. Thanks!
what about 27 inch mid 2010 i3
nice!!! I can see one of my rare posts on the mac forums got some attention. I was curious about 32gb myself. even intel's spec sheets say the i7-860 through i7-880 is limited to 16 but the comparable xeons (x3460-3480) can use 32. now, what i find curious is not just the demonstrably untrue limit to capacity but also...the unpublished ecc support. 10 years on and I still have experiments to run. if i can get my hands on another MB953LL/A board (just in case i slip) i'll populate that third sata header. also, the minipcie card should be entertaining since usb 3.0 has been proven as viable.
Can I put a i7-2600 in this iMac.....or will it stay On a black screen if I replace its core 2 duo with i7-2600?
I want to know if it work for:
- iMac 27-Inch "Core i5" 2.66 (Late 2009)
- iMac 11,1
- High Sierra or Mojave
it does i just bought today the ram corsair risking thinking it won't work but it does...
if you sent me email i can sent you screenshot
@@abelesteve9881 so u have 32 gb for Mac Sierra? I have to know ASAP
@@bbvisuals1094 yes
@@abelesteve9881 will it work on late 2009 21.5 ?
Just ordered 32 GB of the Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V SODIMM Memory For Mac CT8G3S1339M. Will receive and install on Tuesday. Hoping it works. Saved $8 by purchasing 4 single 8GB sticks instead of doing two of the 2x8 kits.
How'd it go?
Thanks man!
Any issues with this protocol? Im running my late 2009 iMac on Sierra and wanting to upgrade ram and SSD. thanks
I also upgraded to a SSD and still running 32GB of RAM. Just note that the highest speed any SSD can do is SATA II in the 27" 2009 iMac. Still faster than a mechanical hard drive, but not as fast as one would like. Solid as a rock. The only issue i've experienced is an occasionally frozen computer upon waking the screen. However I think that's a bug with the newer OS versions as I never had any issue with Snow Leopard.
Will this work on a late 2009 Model Identifier iMac10,1?
Nope, doesn't look like it.

Hi
Do u think works in a:
iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 24-Inch Aluminum (Early 2009) features a 2.66 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor, with two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip, a 6 MB shared level 2 cache, a 1066 MHz system bus, 4 GB of RAM (1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM), a 640 GB (7200 RPM)
..
🤔🤔🤔🖐🏻
I have a quick question. Granted, we know the iMac 11,1 can run 32 GB. But, will it still run the RAM at 1333 MHz, the specs on the RAM, or will it run slower than that on this model? I am taking into account some of the hardware limitations compared to more advanced Intel-based iMacs that are made today. I assume no, but I just thought I should ask. I only ask because I wonder if the RAM slots may be slower than the actual RAM itself. Bear in mind that this is eight-year old technology now. But, it makes me happy that it can be done this way because I can do it to my iMac 11,1. Happy upgrading, everyone. Thanks. :)
If the Mac System Information panel is to be believed, it does run at 1333 MHz and not 1000 MHz of the original RAM.
That is a cool deal. I might try that in the future. Thanks. :)
What about 2009 late i5?
According to this, yes. Might be worth a try.
www.everymac.com/actual-maximum-mac-ram/actual-maximum-imac-ram-capacity.html
will corsair's RAM work on it?
I would assume so, as long as the specs are correct.
yes, it works I use a maximum of 32GB, and I have also upgraded the Late 2009 27inch Imac GPU to Nvidia NVIDIA Quadro K5000M 4GB, works smooth like butter, Uhuyyy
how did you upgrade the gpu
@@isktcha the GPU itself is not integrated to the motherboard, it uses a mxm port (mobile pci-e) so you can change it for other more modern and powerful GPU's non provided by apple, is not straightforward or plug and play, it needs logical modding (changing the bios) or sometimes even physical modding of the heatsink (due to physical limitations of an AIO computer) and apple deprecated the support of more modern Nvidia GPU's on macos, but you can improve A LOT over the included GPU, and more if you don't need Mac os, I ordered a few days ago a Quadro m2200 for this purpose
Thanks for posting this.
I bought these Crucial memories CT2K8G3S1339M: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJK2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
Which are stated to be exactly like the one you mentioned... but HALF THE PRICE!
So far they work great! I'll do a memory stress test tomorrow.
My old 2.8Ghz Core i7 iMac is now kicking hard with 32GB of RAM and 512GB of SDD storage.
What an amazing investment.
+thepresi2 Hi mate, can you please confirm this RAM continued to function at 32gb and you would still recommend? Cheers!
+tay01046305 Yes. They still work great, under heavy daily use. All good for me.
+thepresi2 thanks mate! what operating system are you running?
+tay01046305 El Capitan, currently updated
Sandro hey! How is the iMac running? Is 32gb worth the upgrade? I am also going to install an ssd. Can you edit HD video, maybe even a bit of 4K video?
