Blade Runner 2049 (2017) Explained
Deliberately paced and densely layered, Blade Runner 2049 can be a bit hard to wrap your head around. What’s so important about Replicants giving birth? Are artificial people any less human than naturally born people? And even after thirty years, we still want to know - is Deckard a replicant? Let’s take a deep dive into this thrilling, cerebral epic.
Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner is the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi cult classic, which was loosely based on Philip K Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Though Scott’s Blade Runner didn’t do well at the box-office, it was considered as the foundational film in the cyberpunk subgenre. Moreover, many critics hail it as one of the greatest American movies of all time. The idea for a sequel first emerged in the 1990s. But financing and licensing issues took more than two decades to resolve. In February 2015, it was confirmed that Denis Villeneuve would direct the sequel and that Blade Runner’s protagonist character Deckard (Harrison Ford) would reprise his role.
The World of Blade Runner
Blade Runner was set in 2019 California; the world is heavily polluted and a large chunk of the human population has already moved to off-world colonies. The all-powerful Tyrell Corporation has created bio-engineered humans, whose slave labour is the foundation upon which off-world communities are built. Called ‘Replicants’, these humanoid beings gradually develop self-awareness and become more ‘human’. Some break away from the colonies and escape to Earth.
In order to hunt them down, government-sanctioned bounty hunters called “Blade Runners” are recruited to ‘retire’ the Replicants. Because Replicants are so indistinguishable from humans, Blade Runners must use a unique ‘empathy test’ called the Voight-Kampff Test to identify them.
The 1982 movie mostly revolves around Los Angeles Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who goes after four replicant fugitives. They are all part of Tyrell Corp’s Nexus-6 model, whose lifespan is only around four years. In his journey, Deckard comes across an alluring Nexus-7 replicant named Rachael (Sean Young). She’s made with implanted human memories. Eventually, Deckard’s experiences make him question the nature of human identity and the commoditized outlook of replicants. Eventually, he flees away from Los Angeles with Rachael.
30 Years Later
Blade Runner 2049 is set 30 years after the events of the first film. A lot has changed in this universe, and some of the events are hinted at within the narrative. Around 2020, Tyrell Corp introduces a new replicant model, the Nexus-8, with extended life spans. Soon though, the replicants increasingly rebel against and their manufacture is prohibited. In 2022, an EMP detonation by replicant terrorists causes a massive digital blackout and destroys the database of replicants. Tyrell Corp goes bankrupt.’.....

One of the (Very) Few Perfect Films in Cinema History.
Absolutely.
The original or 2049 ?
@bumblebeetuna443
Shading toward 2049.
With that said; the way(s) in which each of these compliments one another is Absolutely Insane, Beautiful, and Wonderfully Staggering. (It seems that) one could come before (or After) the other. Either Could stand alone. And/Or they can/could in fact be one in the same Beautiful Film.
Except for the god damn meandering pace🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
@alexmason8557
"That [as You put it] God Damn [Your Words, Not Mine] Meandering Serpentine Pace🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄" I'd Wager is More than likely Intentional. Along with Not at all (a God Damn - Your Words) a bad thing.. 😐🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄😐😐😐😐🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
It’s also worth noting Joe’s personal struggles are what draw a lot of attention to this film. The portrayal of a man in pursuit of finding his true meaning in life while simultaneously struggling to decide between duty and selfishness. Men often face both of these conflicts for many years resulting in the male mental health crisis seen today.
Especially when it comes to women abusing using power over men.
I’m going through that right now. I’ve put so much effort into being the best version of myself and in some way its gotten me very far, but in others it hasnt.
Then sometimes I waste away playing video games with my friends and feel happy.
Selfishness or greater duty, which side will I fall
stop the woke shit and enjoy the film
BR2049 is Beautiful, a chef-d'œuvre, one of the best movies ever made, outstanding work by Denis Villeneuve (as always)
Too bad that great movies such as this one don’t do well at the box offices. I guess people are just so used to fast paced stuff with a whole lot of fighting they don’t appreciate a meaningful story anymore.
At first, i would put this on at night to lull me to sleep. I got half way through across a few nights and it started to get my attention. I decided to sit down and fully watch it……..soooooo fucking good. Everything I can ask for in a movie. Beautiful cinematography, sound design, and the ability to provoke thought in the viewer. I love how Denis portrayed female characters in a strong, beautiful, and intimidating manner. Bladder Runner 2049 and Dune have my heart
Bladder runner damn need some pepto bis mol
A rare film that is a worthy sequel but also is possibly even better.
He just wanted to be a Real Human Bean...
a Real Hero...
Beans
Underrated comment
Probably the best movie ever made, Every second has meaning. If you miss 30 seconds then you miss something important. This movie is super lit asf
Great film! I watched it 3 or 4 times and every time it was as enjoyable as the first. Never found it dull, I don't understand how people can think that.
Great video, thanks for the detailed explanation. Now I must watch the older movies which I didn't know about. Great movie by the way, I'm impressed 🔥
Blade Runner Blackout, is an animated "Movie" but its not very long. Then if you want more information on Wallace. Watch Blade Runner Lotus. A 13 episode anime that really takes a deep dive. But fills in a lot of games in BR2049. Good luck.
Such a good fucking movie. Visually breathtaking, the color work is incredible, the themes will stick with you, the music is incredible, it only expands on the first movie. Just a movie for the ages.
K is one tough dude, and a replicant. I think the movie wants you to think that he died, with the snow falling, and all. But I believe he survived, leaving the story open for the next sequel.
Great video just finished watching it and really enjoyed it
So excited for the show.
Thanks for this video! This helped me understand what was going on in the movie. I just rented it today, because the previews of it looked really good. I have not seen the original film. I recapped the story of it on RUclips to try to get a better understanding of it, before watching the sequel. I was half way through the movie losing what the heck was going on in the story. I finished it out though, and I was a little bummed of it being a wasted rental for me. I could not follow the story well. I'm happy to find this video, and understand it better! This movie is good, and even better with a couple more re-watches of the flick in the future, now having more knowledge of it.
-Thank You!
This is pure art
Great movie ! We need a Third movie !
Very nicely explained
Underrated film
This one and dune 2 the best
I've seen the first one close to a 1000 times over the years and I love the sequel!
cleared up a lot of things for me, thank you
Every frame is artfully done
I was travelling from Ethiopia to SA when I saw this movie. Thank you for breaking this down for us.
William Blake:
"Why wilt thou give to her a Body whose life is but a Shade?
Her joy and love, a shade: a shade of sweet repose:
But animated and vegetated, she is a devouring worm:"
"Man divided from his Emanation is a dark Spectre
His Emanation is an ever-weeping melancholy Shadow."
"Daughters of Beulah! Muses who inspire the Poet's Song!
Record the journey of immortal Milton thro' your realms
Of terror and mild moony lustre, in soft sexual delusions
Of varied beauty, to delight the wanderer and repose
His burning thirst and freezing hunger."
"The deep of winter came,
What time the secret child
Descended thro’ the orient gates of the eternal day."
Okay, you mentioned Blade Runner Blackout, great, good stuff. However, you did not mention the anime Blade Runner Lotus, which explains the rise of Wallace. And why he is blind.
Joe might have a child in the next Blade Runner.
The movie is basically a sci-fi remake of The Maltese Falcon. Every character desires something. The main focus is Anna, but others have personal goals. For example Luv wants Wallace to see that she is the perfect replicant, not Anna. Deckard is the only person, who doesn't want anything but gets what the rest are after. Yet just like the statue Anna isn't what people obsessed searching for them expect. One is fake while the other is flawed.
Some films need to be watched a couple of times to be understood and/or appreciated.
Thats why they bomb.
Its a sleeper and better for it.
what is the amplification of Gaff showing the Unicorn to Joe at the hospital ?
Definitely a great movie, hard to follow and understand and quite long, movies like this never do great at the box office but as time goes on ages very well.Just like Heaven's Gate which is one of the greatest movies ever filmed but got bad reviews and didn't do well at box office.
Blade runner 2049 and drive are Ryan goslings best films
its ironic that both movies were not fiscal successful in cinemas because (again ironic) both did not make enough to warrent a sequel
Blade Runner, which premiered June 25, 1982, was a $30 million film and made just $41 million
Blade Runner 2049 made $267.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $150 million.
the fact that movies need to make 2 - 3 x their cost is part of whats wrong with hollywood.
Joy is a tamagotchi
But in the end, what killed K?
Hi 👋
Blade runner 2099 is it true?
Love this film
One of the few good films hollywood has made that is based on a 1980s franchises and stands on it's own and isn't just used to cash in on nostalgia.
A sequel being made by Amazon Studios?! Not good news for me...
Nice! I know what's real.
Thank God for the blackout, am I right or am I right?!?!
Both Bladerunner films are master piece's...
A movie so powerful, it made me lose interest in movies forever.. 😢
What does that mean?
Was it so good that others didn’t match up you mean?
I couldn’t concentrate wt You t are trying to say in this video
12:30 sorry to be a nerd here but it anakin skywalker is the chosen one
K and Dr Ana are brother and sister.
Dr. Ana's childhood memory was implanted to K.
I wish I just saw this explanation instead of the boring movie
If there are ever moments that it's boring, they are purposeful and very good in the end. It might be a little boring, but it's still a masterpiece film with a great message.
Ryan Gosling is literally me
Seriously it was a great film with great atmosphere, visuals and design
The movie is made personal due his acting, gosh it's a "literally me" movie
Lets see what happens next and other movies i will see
The true chosen one is Jesus Christ. He died for all of us humans, and made all of us able to be with God, as His chosen ones. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Him.
Jesus IS NOT God! He is ONLY a prophet! Prove me is there any wrong in Qur'an?? You must believe Qur'an, you cant deny anything inside it, bro. There is only ONE God, No three god in one god or any confusing concept about it.
No such thing as Gods, and prophets are scammers.
@@BrushWayne47 No such thing as Gods, and prophets are scammers.
@@BrushWayne47 who should I believe, Him who was born of a virgin, in a manger. That died and rose again, and is now seated at the right hand of God, or a man, who sinned, and died for no one? Jesus Christ is the Son of God, He is the Word of God, made flesh, who came and died, overcame death, so that through Him, all can be saved. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but through Him.
@@fscottfitzgerald115 what does it profit a man, if he gained the whole world yet forfeit his own soul? Did you give yourself life?
