Was better. Horror movies for example in today's day and age rely too much on shock value and cheap scares. A psychological impact is much scarier, which is why in older movies you see more of that

@@FlyingGunman00 This. It's why even though most horror movies from the old days don't hold up all that well now due to obvious technology and film technique advancements within the film industry there's still quite a few that can give modern horror movies a run for their money. The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre came out in 1974...it's *still* a top tier horror movie even today.

Other great ones that you didn't mention in your other comment like Alien and The Fly for example are other examples of older movies that prioritize mood, atmosphere and storytelling while having incredibly well-holding-up special effects which noticeably have more effort put into them than just slapping some CGI on top. So for me you get the best of both worlds - the storytelling and the creativity

Heavily agreed on Alien and The Fly. The Fly in particular imo is quite underrated within the horror hall, I don't think it gets talked about enough. The original Psycho (a 1960 film) legit knocks 90% of modern horror movies out of the way. With ease mind you.

@@monadreher2428 Yup. It's just all so samey, the aesthetics, the creatures, the cinematography, the atmosphere. Mass produced boring horror. Generally a lot of movies coming out today wind up imitating yesterday's classics. The Substance which recently came out for example borrows from Cronenberg heavily... Joker from Taxi Driver and so on... but at least with these slight copycats they try to do something different from everything else... not another Marvel or the 7th sequel of a boring action movie or an unnecessary reboot or remake

Him bringing the snowcat up to the hotel was the only reason Wendy and Danny got away, if it wasn’t for that the whole family was steak and eggs. And if you watch the sequel: doctor sleep, you see that Danny and Wendy got to live the rest of their lives because of Dick and beyond that, even mentors Danny from beyond the grave with his shining ability. could not watch this with out leaving a comment in praise of the wonderful shelly duval (RIP). the director of this movie pushed her to her absolute mental and physical limit, causing her to experience many different forms of illness throughout and after the making of this film.
the scene where she’s frantically waving the knife at possessed jack was filmed a horrific 127 times before the final, perfect scene was made: a result of her very much real delirium, fear, exhaustion, and trepidation while filming it. She played this role so well, but at what cost. :( RIP Shelly!!!

Dick (the chef’s) purpose ended up being; saving Wendy’s life & providing the getaway.
Without Dick, Wendy dies and/or there’s no vehicle to escape nor any way to contact anyone.
There was another scene at the end where Danny and Wendy are in a hospital, and Mr. Ullman (the man who hired Jack) visits Wendy and Danny at a hospital.
Ullman says there’s no evidence of Jack or Dick’s body, and the hotel is completely intact.
He then hands that tennis ball to Danny… end credits.
The scene apparently aired one week in theaters, and Kubrick removed it and had all it all completely destroyed never to be seen.
A few pics of the scene are out there, but evidently no video exists.

7:53 it was the 80's, as kids we could roam around lots of spaces and not see our parents for a long time. We did it outside and inside - I'm talking hours. I honestly believe w less technology, ppl used more intuition(using real human intelligence) - like you could feel if something was wrong and most of the time nothing was. ☺, that's why Gen x and millennials and everyone before are the way they are - we were like little adults trapped in kids bodies. Love to watch ppl react to this movie; all the empty scenes help you figure out Jack's place in the movie, no bombs, no explosions, just you and the movie, thinking, critically and not sensationally. Every single thing is important, from land scape to setting to furniture to wardrobe. This came on tv all the time back in the day, I think I saw it multiple times by the time I was Danny's age. For these movies, you gotta talk less, listen more, you guys kind of talked over some important parts and I feel you're trying to play tough in front of each other and for the camera. Btw Mr Halloran(the black guy) was their angel and a martyr, he died like martyrs do - that was easy to figure out imo at least I did as a small child. There is a reason why movies like Scream mention all the older movies, they simply could not exist w out them. That is why you guys get nothing, but sequels remakes and throwbacks for entertainment nowadays; you simply can't top these greats. Thanks though guys, I'll definitely check out all your other old school movies reactions. Lol, how can they make it seem like a "sixth sense thing" if that movie came out in 1999, lol come on. Also, horror movies rarely if ever never got nominations at the Oscars.

    1. Joe Turkel/Lloyd plays Tyrell in "Bladerunner"
    2. "Here's Johnny" was adlib by Nickelson.
    3. It took over 65 takes for Jack to chop through the doors. He used his voluntary firefighting skills to get through all the takes. They had to keep building doors.
    4. The reason King didn't like this adaptation of the movie is because he didn't like the changes Kubrick made. This thing was remade just for King and although the remake was more in line with the book IMVHO it wasn't as good at this one.
    5. Two of the changes he didn't like were Jack's decent into madness was too rapid, and Wendy wasn't such a patsy in the book.
    6. Shelley Duval 😇said making this film was the worst thing she ever experienced in her life. She said she would never do it again.
    7. Jack Nicholson and Scatman worked together in "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest".
    8. The real villain here is the hotel itself.
    9. Watch Dr. Sleep. Danny is an adult and many of the loose ends will be cleared up.

This movie actually drove Shelley Duvall nuts. Kubrick is a great director, but he might have been a little too rough on Shelley- working her into a state of terror for the realism of the part. Maybe that was the only way. It's debatable, like everything. It was too much for the poor girl.
I'm speculating, as all of us are with this movie, but I think everything was a manifestation or illusion created by the Indian spirits in the hotel, combined with Jack's memories of his past life there. The hotel's spirits began to inhabit Jack. In the gold ballroom party scene, Jack continued having flashes of his past life, there in 1921. He'd always been the caretaker there. He couldn't see his reflection in the restroom, or see Grady's, because he was both a part of the manifestation as well as a witness to it. Delbert Grady was a projection from Jack's memory of his past life there. Having been the caretaker there in 1921, it was like returning home. Delbert Grady was there as a waiter in 1921, and Charles as the possessed caretaker that killed his wife and kids much later in 1970. Delbert claimed he did the evil deed, but there was a link between the Grady's, I think. It might have been Charles coming through Delbert when he said that.Jack wasn't afraid of ghosts, other than the part of him that was still somewhat himself, as he sure freaked out when he saw that spirit

The $19 million dollar budget for this movie would be considered a $75 million dollar budget in 2024.
Speaking on your discussion about this film, it sounds like you're judging this one far more on the entertainment and rewatch-ability value, as opposed to an art and deep thought value.
Movies like Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday The 13th, and Halloween have a more entertainment value through their fast-pace and surface level satisfactory. They're meant to give you something straight away and be a fun ride, at the cost of building deep characters and deep stories.
But for movies like The Shining, The Exorcist, and even the recent Dune moves are meant to be slow and atmosphere building. It requires long attention span and patience, so that character establishment and development are allowed to be more organic. You're supposed to allow yourself to be taken in by what is going on.

Also wanna say when this movie first came out it wasn’t well received and it wasn’t just Stephan king that didn’t like it, it lowkey had to gain its following and eventually it became one of those classic movies you have to watch so y’all being so mad at them when the older generation didn’t like this film at first. 🤷🏾‍♀️

If it's any consulation guys this film is a bastardization of the novel. The only thing this has in common with the source material is that it takes place in a hotel, nothing more and nothing less. If plot elements don't make sense that's because Kubrick had an entirely different vision from which imo he should've just made an entirely original work instead of completely overriding and changing Kings original story and borrowing its namesake, which btw King was very unhappy that he did. Nickleson's acting is what carried this film and if he wasn't in it with his super crazy mannerisms idk if the film wouldn't have been this successful.

Yeah, I gotta agree with them. Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall did an amazing job, but this movie was not good. I see why Stephen King hated this adaptation of his book because it really didn't make a lot of sense tbh. Granted, I'm into psychological thrillers, but this was way too vague. I'd rather read the book.

Okay the main thing I can’t agree with is Rob about Jack performance(he says stuff like that on purpose just to go against the grain) that’s just a flat out lie he was outstanding BUT y’all are so mad at them for not liking it just because it’s a “classic” but THE FUCKING ARTHOR HATES THIS MOVIE! Stephan King himself HATES this wonderful classic y’all are crying over so now what ? 😂 the book was better if we are being real the movie itself isn’t the scariest movie ever but it was good because it was based off the novel let’s remember that kids! Art is subjective just because some find it scary doesn’t mean everybody will and just because it’s considered a classic doesn’t automatically make it good let’s get over ourselves.

people seem to be real upset that they didn't care for the film simply because its considered a horror classic, but the fact of the matter is that this film was critically panned when it was released. reviews were mixed at best and Stephen King fans hated the changes made to the story. it became acclaimed over the course of decades and gained notoriety from constant being constantly parodied in pop culture.
i love the film and it's undeniably iconic but the way people in the comments are insisting it's a generational issue causing the guys to not appreciate it is just flat out wrong lol. horror is just a divisive genre.

    • @Nomad7222
      @Nomad7222 Месяц назад +12

It didn't gain notoriety for being parody. It gained praise after the fact when people starting appreciating Kubrick's cinematography and set design in this film.

    • @n0nsticknick
      @n0nsticknick Месяц назад +5

@Nomad7222 there's a reason all four of them recognized moments like the bike tracking shot or the shot of the twins despite never having watched the film, and it's because the shining has been parodied and referenced in pop culture for decades. but you're not wrong, the reason it gets referenced so much is because of how iconic the film is.

Yeah, I've never gotten the hype around this movie. Yes, it's a classic that everyone should see, but it's not that great🤷‍♀️Nicholson is the movie for me. The sequel that Flanigan did, Doctor Sleep, is amazing! The attention to detail in that movie is fantastic and is way more eventful than this one.
