That is slick! It never occurred to me to use the motor as a jig, I always assumed you had to scribe out lines on a fixture table and make sure the neck was true. Are you welding with an old Lincoln Invertec or is that a new Aspect 230? Only thing I'd add is to use a pipefitter's wrap-around to make sure the cuts are square, and to bevel the cuts for penetration. Nice work tho, your confidence shows.
I am curious what you use for the gear shifter crossover afterwards? I see the frame is cut forward of existing crossover on seatpost downtube? Thanks.
HEY LOWBROW!!! Will the ironhead hardtail you sell fit on a 1979 AMF ironhead 1000, I just recently bought the bike and I heard the frames are different than other ironheads?
TIG welding is not an amateur skill, especially when your life depends on it. MIG is much easier to learn, very strong and with a little practice, you could perform this mod in a day.
hi what is the Diameter of the neck tube that you are welding too top tube and what is the distance between the rear engine bolt holes? top to botton my 1974 harley has modified frame that had been stretch out a littel thank you
From Tim "My machine is a Lincoln Electric V205-T. It’s a “SMART Machine” (Lincoln’s terminology) so it can run 120 and 200 volts. The machine senses which it’s plugged into and regulates the amps accordingly. I typically have my machine plugged into 220v for more amp range and only plug into 110v in the field when 220v isn’t available. “TIG” (GTAW) electrode is referred to as ROD. I use ER-70S-2 (ER=electrode rod). ER-70S-6 is also acceptable. I prefer the -2 because it has more detoxifiers and less silicon and seems to perform better on dirty/old steel. As fas as amperage goes, a good rule of thumb is 1 amp per 1 thousandth material thickness. This frame was 1/8 wall tubing (0.125 thousandths of an inch) so I would recommend starting around 125amps and dialing it in depending on your speed of travel. I like to run hot and move fast so my machine was set at 180-200 amps. I may not use all that heat, I like to make adjustments on the fly with the foot pedal. I also rarely floor the foot pedal and set my machine higher than what I plan to run so I do not need to stop, get up and adjust my amps. If you are new to welding here’s what to look for in a nice weld bead; 1. evenly spaced B. Relatively flat (no caterpillar looking beads) 3. Nice wash in (edges of weld should be flush or just above base metal. If the edges are undercut, you either are too hot, moving too slow, or aren’t adding enough filler). I hope that helps!"
well you aren't gonna restore it if thats what you are asking... Choppers man depending on how much class you make it, it could be worth way more then a stock ironhead.
How many channels are going to that same old song you used at the beginning. It's worn out. Time for something more original. Surely there is other copyright free tunes you can find with a little effort.
I've been looking at this for a little while. Thanks for going over the details. Just hoping they're still in stock when i get the scratch together.
Great job man thanks for sharing and God’s blessings for you all
Damn I'd love that bike!!!!!!!! trade you my 2004/'06 project... Straight across!!!!!!!
Really enjoyed the video, great, Thanks
Good Tip For A Square Cut on a round tube
Use gear clamps , this will assure a nice square cut guide
Great video

Just need the option of using a drum brake. Other than that, really nice hard tail.
Fire shirt 🔥🔥🔥

Video looks amazing! Timmy's uber professional persona is bitchin'!
On the 89 sporters frame, can I use the stock rear brake calipers?
Never welded, looks fairly straightforward. Plus shops charge $$$. On a scale 1-10 how hard is it to weld on Hardtail and do passable job?

I believe he said 1 inch
I do not have a tig, I have an old Lincoln stick welder can you weld with at stick?
yes
what type mig/stick welder that you are using input 120/220?? output amp?? type of sticks used thank you

Lincoln Electric Welders >
👍
Have 69 ironhead rear drum won't fit no cross over, to bad what I'm looking for
Who is this guy....and what has he done with Todd? : ) Still a good video. Very nicely done. But Todd's okay, right?
Todd's fine, Todd doesn't weld. :)
Can I get it for a 97 road king
Cool
Question, will that ruin the value of the frame ?

@@lowbrowcustoms I have been thinking about welding one on . My grandfather gave me a 74 shovel the last newest bike he ever owned .
@@JohnDoe-mt8rf your grandfather, your bike; but that would be pretty sweet restored or kept original.
YES , STOCK FRAMES ARE RARE ! DON'T BE STUPID , ORIGINAL FRAMES ARE WORTH FAR MORE , FIX AND STRAIGHTEN AN REPAIR , 😎
@@JohnDoe-mt8rf Keep it stock ! put a taller front wheel on , adjust your front fender bam ! 👍😎
Angle iron is a better aligning jig.
King Diamond \m/\m/.
Nice King Diamond ripoff shirt.
Interesting, ironheads started in 1957, not 1952.
The Harley-Davidson Model K was manufactured from 1952 to 1956. The Ironhead was just the OHV version of the K at the time.

Shame on you for cutting that 1952 - 1972 Sportster frame. How stupid you are to make a rigid frame out of it?
Meh, choppers man.. can't all be stock
😂 Taking a bike and changing , to a hard tail is beyond stupid ! VALUE AN RIDEABILITY GOES OUT THE DOOR ! GOOD LUCK ON A 2000 MILE RIDE ! 😂
Tell me you ride a bagger without telling me you ride a bagger
