African designers/architects are definitely needed. Many buildings constructed in various African countries are basically replicas of the West, which are not functional/efficient for the African landscape. They don't take advantage of uniquely African materials and designs that are harmonious with the environment.
you said everything very well!!! i keep saying, architects and contractors have to take advantage of the ancient architectural designs we used to have in Africa, because those were functional and didnt need any outside workers to accomplish that. Those buildings were the solution to all problems and everyone had a roof over their head. once that is sorted, economic growth will happen

Mr Benimana’s insightful talk raises several issues that are critical to the future of humanity and our planet. For me, it’s not so much a case of Africa and China ought not to be following Western building models and values, rather that the West ought not to be following Western building models and values, indeed, no one should be following current Western building models and values. We need carbon-free, nature-friendly, highly localised, community-based, sustainable, and resilient architecture, and we need it in a hurry. Mr Benimana is right; African architects are leading the world in this regard, but the rest of us need to follow their inspiration as a matter of urgency.
This is exactly what I always wanted for the world's cities, so that different cities in the world has its own distinct features. You can always know whether you're in Paris or Firenze or London or Oslo or Bali.. because they have their own distinct architectural style used in many buildings. I don't quite agree with what Bandung's governor (who's also an architect) Ridwan Kamil said about modern architecture (you can see it on Ted Talk too) I think it's essential to make cities' architecture distinct and unique from one another. It adds up to the experience visiting it.
You have made me a much proud Ugandan architecture student..... I have a saying that " ONE CANT KNOW WHERE HE IS GOING IF HE CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE HE CAME FROM". This was incredible. Every group of people needs architects, and to get that started is the probably the hardest thing. It will be an incredibly difficult challenge, but he is probably starting in the best place.
Look, the majority of Africa is in mass poverty, and is facing over population, as well as the degradation of land. It's easy to criticize. However, people like this man that are willing to stand up and take the lead on changing the fate of their countries is the first step in a prosperous society. It may take decades, but as long as people have a genuine stake and motivation in the well being of their home, things will improve. The great wealth and beauty that the western world enjoys is because men throughout history were discontent with the way things were and decided to change them for the better. This is is hopefully the path that Africa is on as well.

I would hazard to guess that over half of population has no access to BC. If encourage and was available, the growth could be at a more sustainable rate. Your comparison to China and the 1 child policy is laughable. The number of children a couple must have, on average, to sustain (not grow) the population of Africa, is about 3 to 6 depending on area. You do realize nature itself controls population. If there is no food to go around, the poor just die. If anything, the wealthy survive in the end. Which are few in all societies anyways. If the US goes from 350M to 2 billion without enough resources, the poor die.

We need to be able to have an adult conversation about overpopulation. As resourceful and adaptive as the strategies presented here are, what is being overlooked is the fact that Western advances would already comfortably sustain the African continent if the population scaled reasonably with the available resources. This excessive breeding stratagy makes sense when living as hunter gatherers where the vast majority of offspring will die before reproductive age, however in a modern context it continually results in mass starvation. An adult conversation about eugenics would be even more useful and would improve the quality of life on our home continent immeasurably, far more than any well meaning philanthropic strategies would. It saddens me deeply that misplaced altruism has prevented us from having an honest conversation about the real cause of the state of squalor these people are unfortunate enough to live in; the differences in average IQ among varying ethnicities. To the doubters (of which there be many), know that there is more evidence to support these claims than any other claims made in psychological science. IQ scores are the greatest predictor of educational attainment and financial success (among other things), and are in fact better at predicting these life outcomes than any other psychometric datapoint is at predicting anything. There hasn't been a single study on IQ where when race was factored in to the equation, average differences weren't found. Environmental impact has been tested for in identical twin & transracial adoption studies, where differences in environment were ruled out as accurate predictor of IQ. Dr. Bruce Lahn's accidental findings when searching genes influencing IQ scores, only made irrefutable that which was obvious to begin with. Dr. Lahn's studies were so predictive of IQ that the University of Chicago patented a genetic IQ test, which they quickly retracted and pressured him into ending his study, when it was later discovered that these genes aren't distributed evenly among varying ethnicities.
Do you have a source for Japanese and Chinese having an average IQ of 60 in the 50's? I found a reference to a study from 50's where Japanese IQ was measured to be 106.6 on average. IQ is also unfortunately mostly genetic as the IQ gap doesn't really differ between white and black Americans who are from similar socioeconomic backgrounds.
Technocracy I'm well aware of how inefficient we are with our resources, and the systemic incentives imbeded in capitalism that are resposible for this. I'm not saying we can't sustain Africa's reproductive rate, this presentation highlighted some very practical means of doing this for their public infrastructure, only that we haven't because their birth rate is ludicrously higher than any other region ever has been (unless we are counting fundy religious minoraties). You'll find their high birth rate has more to IQ than it does economic factors, lower IQ people generally have less children across all races (as in bellow average IQ Western Whites have as many children as average IQ African Blacks). I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you're little mass extermination quip was tongue in cheek. That said as impossibly complex as the Human brain is, the neuroanatomical features that separate a high IQ brain from a low IQ brain are actually fairly simple. Fortunatly pharmacological stratagies exist to boost IQ in fully developed adults. Pharmacological intervention, embryo selection eugenics and Internet access, prioritize that over anything else and the wells will build themselves. The Flynn Effect is what you are reffering to with regards to increases in IQ scaling with country development. However mostly has to do with pre and post natal nutrition. The Flynn effect scales with the amount of people who have enough to eat, and doesn't apply to the wealthy and well feed in these under developed countries. However you'll still find that even when adopted into European families from birth, Africans have much lower IQ's than their adopted families on average, and Asians adopted from birth have higher IQ's than their adopted European families. Furthermore twin adoption studies reveal that socioeconomic factors have very little measurable influence on IQ, twins adopted from birth always have the same IQ regardless of the race and wealth of the homes they were adopted into. As well as having similar intrests, similar or identical careers, having and recovering from mental breakdowns at the same time in life, amoung other striking similarities that nurture cannot account for. For me what caused me to go down thi rabbit hole was failing to account for the minoraty of high IQ people coming out of these third world countries, born into communities that looked like they would foster just about anything but genius. Why do high IQ Blacks occasionally come out of poor families, and why do they end up doing better than the ocasional low IQ White that comes out of a wealthy family? You want to talk serious science, every study on IQ ever conducted points to this being true. Dr. Bruce Lahn's accidental findings genetic IQ test (which was so accurate the Univercity of Chicago patented the test until they found out biology isn't concerned with political correctness at which point they dropped the patent and pressured Dr. Lahn from pusuing further research into the matter) should have been the the final nail in the coffin.
Once economic stability is achieved, so will the population stabilize. If a mother is guaranteed to not die, or have her child die, during childbirth then she will have less children. Another way to prevent overpopulation is by having easily accessible birth control, and having the population educated on ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies. A lot easier said than done, but the overall point is that the population will stabilize once the economy does.
Daniel That doesn't at all sound intuitive "If a mother is guaranteed to not die, or have her child die, during childbirth then she will have less children.", but a lot of these social science phenomena are I suppose. A little skeptical given the fact that moving to first world countries doesn't seem to slow their average birth rate much, but even if we managed to get their average birth rate down to the African American level (which isn't that much less), it still wouldn't likely be sustainable. However even if true, that is still *if* the economy stabilizes, and that's a very big if. Birth control education sounds like a good idea, however eugenic policies sound like an even better one (implemented everywhere, although Africa needs it most).
I'm assuming we're hearing from someone white or ethnically white whom is used to and preferenced toword everything being about white people, the US, and Europe
Since you seem to think I must feel guilty to support African national development or pressured to go along with something someone is telling me to care about, I assume you are feeling attacked by something that actually has nothing to do with you, and don't really take anything seriously that doesn't directly affect you because you don't feel any kind of investment in people you don't know and can't relate to

But what about the females?
rkid what?
Don't bring that western crap to Africa....they're women will have equal respect and opportunity

Yes that happens when you click on a video about africa??
I'm assuming we're hearing from someone white or ethnically white whom is used to and preferenced toword everything being about white people, the US, and Europe
Since you seem to think I must feel guilty to support African national development or pressured to go along with something someone is telling me to care about, I assume you are feeling attacked by something that actually has nothing to do with you, and don't really take anything seriously that doesn't directly affect you because you don't feel any kind of investment in people you don't know and can't relate to
