  • CHANDWELL N GAUGE MODEL RAILWAY UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2021
    Now that I have finished the canopy for my station, I decided to make a couple of extra details just for fun - a card departure board and some ticket machines. My attention is now turning towards the buildings that will make up the side of my station. Here is my model railway layout update for February 2021.
    This month I have completed building my over-all canopy for the station at Chandwell. I then used card, paper, and paint to make a large station departure and arrival display, and a small bank of 1990's style railway ticket machines.
    I have started to research and mock up the next set of buildings that will make up the side of the station at Chandwell, and which will be built from card as usual.
    If you look closely at the departure board, you will see references to some of my favourite RUclips model railway layouts. See how many you can recognise!
    I also used the opportunity to do a little bit of ballasting down the middle set of station tracks.

    Excellent update Michael. Loved the departure board - so cleverly done plus some recognisable destinations - Elvenholme and calling at Blackwood on the way - brilliant 👏. Layout looking superb and the station is really coming together. A great advert for N Gauge. Cheers Euan

    Well that has made my day! Thanks Michael for using Exehaven Harbour as a destination, it’s a great Idea and at some stage there will be a departures board at Exehaven Harbour for the return service. Love the ticket machines too very nice work.
    Like the plans for the station and look forward to what you’re going to do. I’ve been trawling through pictures of stations myself because of the two stations at Exehaven will have to be scratch built, but I must concentrate on getting the track laid!!!!
    Thanks again Michael, always an interesting enjoyable watch, cheers John

      Thank you John! I’m pleased you saw the reference to your layout in my video. It’s a shame it will never be seen in real life, but the people of Chandwell do enjoy the occasional trip to Exehaven. I don’t think many residents of your layout would ever want to make the return trip! 😂. I love looking at pictures of stations or whatever to get inspiration for the next building. I am currently struggling with the proportions of my clock tower. Darlington’s, to scale, is way too big for its surroundings at my station so I’m mocking up alternatives. I may make a short video of this but I’ve not decided yet. Thanks for watching and commenting as ever. All the best. Michael.

    Hi Michael! Just come across your wonderful layout. Wow this really highlights the potential of N gauge in a relatively modest space. I love the overall atmosphere of the layout and having just watched your “welcome to Chandwell” tourist video I just had to smile at the humorous comments about the area! It made it seem real somehow. Your scratch building skills are amazing and having just returned to N after several space restricted OO gauge layouts I have been totally inspired by your efforts. Darlington is an amazing Station, the platforms are some of the longest in the country and the station was the largest covered concourse for a number of years. You’re right about the clock tower, it it’s beautiful, I must pass it at least half a dozen times a day as I live 10 minutes walk away. Your layout and station ideas are truly magnificent. Have a look for photos of Moor Street from the 70’s and 80’s. It was a run down station for as long as I can remember with very few trains calling there. They were mostly local services that ran from Stratford-upon-Avon and through south Birmingham. . . There is a tunnel which runs from Moor Street and comes out at the new Snow Hill station but when they decided to close Snow Hill it became disused. Moor Street was always a dirty little station with faded BR blue doors, grimey windows with that caked on dirt and had weeds growing out of the guttering . . .

My wife thought i was mad particularly when I printed it out and it was so small you couldn’t even read it 😂. I really liked your ticket machines. Look very effective. I definitely agree you should keep the 2 storey building quite short to allow you to keep the view into the station. Thank you Rogier... If you have wired your HO Peco points with a switched wire to the frog, then you will have nothing to worry about. If, however, like me, you are relying on point blade contact, then all I can say is that I have not had too much trouble. I do add a little fillet of card between the blades while the glue is drying (you can see this on my December update video). Once the glue is dry, they generally work fine. On some occasions, a gentle scrape of the inside of the blades with my scalpel is needed, but other than that, I have been very lucky! I don't think many other modellers would recommend my gung-ho approach though, so take my words under advisement! :) --Michael.

    Wow Michael, thank you so much for putting Wickford’s name up in lights 😍 and next to my “partner in crime” Mr. Ireland’s P.I.T.M. too 😎 Since I am currently refitting my station I will have to return the favour 😉 Your planning for the station buildings is exemplary 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 fascinating to see the thought process behind the build, just as an architect would have viewed the scene 🤔 Keeping lines of sight to the trains in the platform is vital to aid that “play” factor, so what your doing makes perfect sense 😁 Only one complaint 😮 “Fun” and “Ballasting” are mutually exclusive 😱 when I “flood” mine it washes away and forms a “tide line” under the rails and lifts the trains off the track 😂😂😂😂 Fantastic update and a very entertaining watch as always 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Very best wishes to Chandwell from all in Wickford ☘️

    Your attention to detail, even when it won't be seen, is inspiring. I think you could try a "Hybrid" design for the station building, taking elements of all those real world examples that caught your eye. This way, you could have a single story building which wouldn't obscure the canopy you put all that effort into making, while still having enough architectural interest to catch the eye - inagine that amazing clock tower included! Now that's a build I'd really like to see! One question I have regarding Inkscape - I have trouble trying to create the stonework or brickwork pattern often found surrounding an arch (I think the stonework or brickwork pattern is called a "Jack Arch".) I've tried making up a small section of arch and using "Pattern along Path" to paste it around a circle, but with no joy If you have any tips or ideas on how to do this, I would be most grateful. The main entrance to the station was originally the buildings along what is now platform 2, but when it became a through station on the main line it was massively rebuilt.
    I don't think a large building would detract from the roof so much, more it would hide it from view, so I like where you're going with having only part of it as a 2 storey building. Keep up the great work!

      Thank you! I am glad you saw Richmond was there on the way 'up north'... my nod to your excellent layout. I did not know that about Sheffield, but I did often idly wonder why those buildings on platform 2 were so large and extensive. The station has changed beyond all recognition since I used to use it to get to/from university 25 years ago. I agree with your thoughts about the station buildings - I think I will keep them low at the front. Thanks for watching! --Michael.

      @@Chandwell maybe have them a little higher than the canopies, so that it's slightly imposing but doesn't overpower or hide them? It doesn't even need to be more than one storey, railway station buildings generally had high ceilings anyway to make them more airy and less claustrophobic, and you could include a lantern roof or clerestory roof maybe to let natural light in and to show up the ticket office or any other interior features? A decent size clock tower maybe like the one at Bank Top station would also be a good focal point without upstaging the canopies too. Got an update video to make/upload in the next couple of days, I've made a start on ballast at long last!

      I like those ideas re the roofs. I have started to notice, now that I look, that station single-storeys are much bigger than housing single storeys. I learn so much just by looking PROPERKY for the first time! Looking forward to your video!

    With me playing catch up, the decision has probably already been made but I would be tempted towards the open aspect of the side of Birmingham Moor Street. That would allow unobscured views across the covered platforms.
    It's a long time since trains stopped at Hunwick and I wonder how many of your subscribers know where it is.
    Thanks for the video.

    Brilliantly innovative.... Thought this was Chadwick N Gauge. To my surprise it wasn't and the details were just a good. Very well done in a much smaller scale. My question would be WHY N GAUGE and are you able to compare the creative work to a OO Gauge layout.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  3 года назад +1

      Many thanks George! I hope you weren't disappointed that I wasn't Chadwick!? I find N Gauge is perfect for the amount of space I have compared to the amount of railway I have. :) Thanks for watching - I hope you drop by again! Many thanks -- Michael.

    Hi Michael, watching your station build prompted me to ask what Matt varnish you use for sealing your models and your platforms prior to ballasting. Great videos as always, thanks

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  3 года назад

      I normally use AK Interactive Matte and Ultramatte acrylic varnish. But on the bits that sat in the watery ballast, I used Humbrol Matt enamel varnish. I thought the extra layer of hard stuff would prevent any warping. It worked though!

    Hi Michael, nice update and love the details of the departures board and the ticket machines. I like the way you have taken a range of real stations as inspiration for Chandwell. Although it will still be unique it does help to give it a sense of realism. One question I have regarding Inkscape if I may? When using textures and then clipping to a shape, do you know how to effectively delete or crop away the part of the original texture that is no longer required? The main reason is to reduce the file size? Cheers, Liam

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  3 года назад

      Thank you Liam. Inkscape is a pest when it comes to file size when working with textures. I have a couple of tips so I will certainly cover that in the next video. It may also help with improving printing when it decides not to print part- transparent layers and shapes.

    Hi Michael. The station looks fantastic and I can't wait to see the building along the side. Question for you....where did you get the precision glue bottle from that you use?

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  3 года назад

      Hi Gaz, thank you. I bought the bottle from a website years ago called Fine Tip Applicators. It no longer exists, I think the woman who ran it is no longer in business. It’s a shame because it is starting to wear out. I tried the Metcalfe version but it didn’t last long... the pin went rusty and made the glue brown. If I ever find a replacement as good as the one I have I will be sure to call it out on a future video. -Michael

    Looking really good. Quick question what did you use for the canopy columns? Many thanks

    • @Chandwell

      Thank you Mark. The columns are cocktail sticks with bases made (badly) out of Miliput. You can see the thinking and the process in this video: ruclips.net/video/297YDY5t77U/видео.html Thanks for watching!

    Hi thanks for your reply yesterday. I’m still catching up as a newcomer to your video channel. Do you have anything that illustrates the electrical side of your layout? Where the track feeds are etc? The track plan is simple but effective and the space you have is similar to mine so I’d be interested to see how it all works under the boards! Cheers

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  3 года назад

      Hi Phil! Thanks again for watching! I don't have much to show on the electrical side as I completed all of that work before I created my channel. The layout is basic DC (not DCC), wired for cab control with two controllers. It's all wired via a control panel built into the cupboard. The only bits about electrics are the Overview video (ruclips.net/video/GfOj-gTBW28/видео.html) and the one about the control panel (ruclips.net/video/aop4BF98bEg/видео.html). Additionally, this video shows me wiring some lights: ruclips.net/video/AW3qcycZeTw/видео.html Hope this helps!
