Could the Middle East run out of water? How one country gets around the problem

  • The Middle East and North Africa are rich in oil and gas, but it's witnessing a shrinking supply of one of earth's most critical resources: water.
Twelve of the 17 most water-stressed countries in the world are in the region, according to 2019 findings from the World Resources Institute. Scientists fear shortages will get worse as the climate warms and rainfall becomes less frequent. That could lead to food shortages, mass migration and conflict.
"We are in a sustainability crisis, a climate crisis," Dr. David Hannah, a professor of hydrology at the University of Birmingham, told CNBC. The Middle East "has very limited conventional water resources, and some of the groundwater resources are saline," meaning they're often unusable or need to be desalinated using expensive, energy-intensive technology.
So how can the Middle East make better use of the limited water it has? CNBC zoomed in on the UAE, which produces the most desalinated water in the world and attracts millions of tourists yearly with its lush green resorts and golf courses - in the middle of the desert.

Have lived in the UAE 9 years. Hotels, Dubai SKi and Golfcourses are the biggest consumers. Sewage is just a small part of the needs. Massive desalination has been their method.

When you read statistic of averange water consumption per person, in that number everything is calculated from road making to toilet paper making. We use water in every process and that number represent average consumption to live by standards of that specific place. For example when you eat 1 kg of beef you need to feed the cow for 3 years in that time it will eat 1,300 kilograms of grains and produce 200 kg of beef. Those grains require water to grow, the farm and slaughterhouse needs to be cleaned, the cow needs to drink - all of these adds up to 3,091,000 liters of water averange. That is 15,400 liters of water for ever 1 kg of beef you eat. Water that you drink and use for hygiene is the miniscule to other things that you use.

Take it from me as a citizen, a student in Pennsylvania in the past paying $120 a year! and now paying this amount every month here since desalination is used and costs a
    lot like California.
It is impossible this region runs out of water, because they got oil that could cover them for the next 100 years, this will cover up desalination needs. California on the other hand is broke on oil (not owned by the gov, instead by ppl of land plots), that's why it is a serious problem over there. EDIT: the inventor of lithium batteries announced we are less than 10 years away from stronger lithium super batteries that would wipe our need for oil in many areas of life. But still, the GCC countries got enough oil left to cover the desalination plants for centuries.
Second reason, the area is becoming greener these years, sudden snow, unusual rain level that causes floods out of nothing! Probably Europe will switch sides with the middle east and african desert areas in the next 100 years.
