  • But let's just ignore the fact that I filmed this video with a new Pocket 3 when my G7 would have probably been "good enough"...

Hell yeah man. My friend was a manager for a minor celebrity in LA and would sometimes invite me to events because he knew I liked to take photos. I was always super self conscious at these events because everyone else taking pictures had crazy gear, and I had my entry level nikon with a kit lens and a 35mm 1.4 I bought second hand. I remember the first time someone from an event posted a bunch of my photos on a large account. The dude asked what I kind of camera I took the photos with before he posted them and I told him. He said, "it's not about the camera it's about the shooter". I know thats probably been said a million times before, but in that moment those words meant a lot to me. New gear is awesome, but it doesnt make you a better photographer. Getting out and taking pictures does.

100% with you, and I relate to that self consciousness of running around with cheaper gear. When I first started freelancing, I'd pull up to paid shoots with an iPhone as my B-cam and sometimes even record speeches with the Voice Memos app (my cheap rates reflected this!) But like you found with that event, as long as people are happy with the end product, it doesn't matter too much how you get there.
I like that you mentioned using a kit lens. I talked a bit about not underrating kit lenses in some clips that I didn't end up putting in the video, but I'm 100% with you. On a follow up trip to California, I took just my 14-42 kit lens and captured some of my favourite shots I've ever taken. Definitely agree with everything you're saying. Thanks for watching!
