One of your initial statements rings true with me. Back to basics really means how much is really enough to meet your individual transportation needs? Bikes, scooters, golf carts/micro cars can potentially eliminate the need for a 2nd family car in some suburban scenarios or just save expenses, wear and tear and extend the life of your expensive traditional car or truck. Seems practical to me where it works.
Bought one second hand (except 38 week wait for a new model) to my daughter for college a year ago, perfect device, safer than a moppet, faster than public transportation, charging at home most part of the time, heater is weak, bt some 3d stl available on thingiverse did the trick same to improve the heater system. perfect car for small to medium cities
I was using a Lectric 2.0 Ebike after I got rid of my Prius. Decided to get a 3 wheeled Nimbus One, but they didn't make them in 2023 as promised. I decided to get a used Fiat 500e. It's small and can get to highway speeds.
I'm watching this for a third time and I noticed some exceptional time-lapse and drone shots of the car and Santorini that I didn't notice the previous times. This is actually a better review and a nicer travel blog than I had realised - thanks !
Between this, and the sister cars Fiat Topolino, and Opel Rocks, I would guess this is the highest production LEV quad. Thanks for sharing this review, Micah.
I want to want an Ami. The general specifications would suit my neighborhood commutes most ov the time, except the random cold days/weeks through the winter. Other than its challenge in cold climate: I want it. This is supposedly why Citroën decided to not launch it i Norway as well. If someone finds a way to install a battery heater, I might even try to import an Ami for myself.
I charge my Tesla with the same plug as the Ami since 2018, obviously also in Europe. It could charge at 230 V x 16 A = 3680 W but in such a configuration the Tesla mobile charger plays safe and limite the amperage (13 A) so it charges at about 3 kW. It is far enough for my daily driving.
While explaining charging, you are mixing up terms. The Ami by default use *Mode 1* charging, connected to domestic socket. (Not "level 1) The charging stations yo mentioned have *Type 2* sockets, (not level 2). Level1/Level2 is commonly used to distinguish voltage levels. Common in 120V countries, but rare in Europe, because default is 230V Mode is a different term, to describe the communication between the vehicle charging station/socket: Mode 1: no communication, charging from normal socket Mode 2: the cable has electronics to tell the car the maximum allowable power, charging from normal socket Mode 3: the charging station communicates with the car, to tell the maximum allowable power, using charging station with tethered cable or special EV charging socket (in Europe that socket would be Type-2) Mode 4: DC fast charging, the car tells the charging station how much power the battery can handle, then the charging station controls the charging. It is possible to charge Ami from a Type-2 station, if you use an adapter, turning it into a Mode 1 socket. However the adapter will ignore the Mode 3 communication. Possibly with some undecided issues, but their conditions are fairly rare.
Yes, we are a US-based media company, and so we use the US-terms of Level 1, Level 2, etc. In the US, J1772 chargers are the level 2 standard, similar to the way type 2 is the standard for level 2 chargers in Europe.
Honestly mixed on this at $8kish. Possible for Europe, but in my city (Tallahassee, FL) people drive 40 in a 25 mph zone and 55+ in a 35 mph zone. You will get run off the road by brodozers is you are on a bicycle or scooter already. Neat as a concept, but would need to be faster to be useable. Honestly probably a bigger battery too, but a 50mph city car with a 75+ mile range would be very welcome even if they need to up it to 10-12k
It is built for rideshares and too expensive for it's compromised defogging, speed and comfort. Especially in colder And it's made in Morocco no less. If it were made in China or India it would be no more than €2000. Citroën Ami is two years old now. We all adored it, we championed the change in thinking and new cimers to the heavy quadricycle market. Too little too late maybe more are needed But regrettably it is not evolving and it needs to evolve fast! It's basically a rough riding, enclosed 45kmh Twizy. And the Twizy is more engineered and remained unchanged for 10 years. Citroën's Ami Namesake needs the Ami/2CV suspension. It just has to.
I hope that the mean old lady in Perissa Beach didn't hit you with a broom while screaming at you... but then again, she may no longer be with us. Don't know if the memory of her is a blessing.
@emma70707 No. The only places that have that sort of thing are places like private campgrounds or retirement communities that allow golf carts. Some counties will allow limited use of 4wheelers and side by sides on rural roads, but there isn't any Provencial or Federal law allowing a four wheeled enclosed limited speed vehicle on city streets. Best we have are e-bike laws. But at least here in Ontario they are limited to 20mph and 2 or 3 wheels with functional pedals.
Many big european cities are in the process of lowering speed in their streets to 30km/h. The Ami can do 45 km/h, which means it could get you a speeding ticket....😎
Perfect for a little island where the distances are short, the roads are narrow and the weather is always warm. I can't imagine using that in a city, it would be terrifying. They should have put a level 2 charge port on it, not that a 5KWh battery needs the speed but because the infrastructure is set up for Level 2s.
But this is legally a Neighbor Electric Vehicle in the US, which means your running costs are a heck of a lot lower than a "true" car between insurance, registration, etc. Very rarely should you only look at purchase price for something you plan on using for a daily driver for multiple years.
As a parent would you rather your children were zipping around on a scooter or four wheels? It's great for its intended use. Europe has a lot of tight roads in it's old medieval towns.
Yeah, you'd have to really want the enclosure, but tbf, this does seem to have more horsepower and you have similar capacity to a full cargo bike, which also probably runs you ~$6-8k. But if you're just commuting alone a plain ebike is definitely the way to go.
The back cover seems to be missing on the driver's chair (it's a rental...) but on the front side there is very minimal padding attached. A bit thicker than a yoga mat, I'd say. Not great, but not bad either. It's not just a bare plastic seat like it looks from behind.
@@Electrek, I wonder how hard it would be to swap or add additional cushioning. It's not something you're doing 8 hour road trips in so you don't need plush recliners like some car seats these days but maybe more than a yoga mat?
best car if you need a car in actual urban centers. USA is too suburban for these unless you live in an actual city, but then parking is still an issue. Love the concept of theses tiny cars
Very nice! Once, in a freezer aisle, I was picking out some meatless chick'n niggets (dino-shaped). There was a guy stocking shelves and I turned to him and said," If I could MAKE everyone eat ONE thing for the rest of life, it would be these." Obviously, he looked at me like I was a freak... That's how I feel about this car. When I finally get POA over my mother (she's 56 so it better be soon), imma put her in a microcar with only level 1! The irony, is that I'll be able to go "this is how we had it BACK IN THE DAY!" and I'll show her a faded digital photo of us in our OG leaf lol Thanks Micah!
Putting it in Neutral can coast downhill too. The Citroën Ami is two years old now. We all adored it, we championed the change in thinking and new cimers to the heavy quadricycle market. Too little too late maybe more are needed But regrettably it is not evolving and it needs to evolve fast! It's basically a rough riding, enclosed 45kmh Twizy. The Twizy was twice as expensive and you did hava to get it without the battery. That was leased and brought the over all cost to over $20000. The AMI is a much better deal and the cheapest option on the market. Some bikes cost more, cargo bikes a lot more and only seat one at half the speed. In the open. The Citroen roof fits a 300Wp flexible solar panel, giving you shade and in the summer nearly 25mi, in the winter still 15mi of range without ever pulling out the cable. What do you want to improve that costs no money? You have to wait several month because they can´t build them fast enough as they sell them.
They sold a handful in California, it wasn't available in other states. They had one "good" year in 2013 when they sold a thousand, after that they sold around a hundred a year, in the last year, 2017, they sold 6.
Where do you even get the battery for that money? And the controller? You also have a closed cabin for two. Paying 2-6k for a bicycle is ok but 8000 for dry transport for two is too much? What do you get for 8k? Anywhere? Mind you, it runs basically for free, needs no licence, inspection, spare parts or any maintenance going above changing the wiper water.
how much cheaper would it have been if citroen had a chinese company make it? 7500 euros is too much for this (citroen said it would only cost 4500 euros)....
I like. The Buggy version is crazy cool. Citroen is not afraid to be different.
The shot of you running an extension cord into the hotel is priceless.

The U.S. needs more microcar options like this for when I put my bikes away for the winter in my city.
It should be legal in a lot of states as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle!

Oh, you have some kind of wide-angle video camera action camera on a stick ! - very clever !
The Fiat badge version - the "Topolino" looks even better.
I may never own one,but I did enjoy watching you and your wife having fun in it
What fun! Great video!
Neat car, but I’d like to see a video about your trip to Santorini 😁
Super cool drive up the mountain 🏔️.
Cute, whatever it is, vehicle. A solar panel roof might be nice. It would keep the sun from scorching you as well.
Great idea 👍
Amazing vehicle. An order of magnitude better than any Tesla for most people if you think about it.
Pretty sure Columbo would ride this car nowadays.

just having a regular wall plug seems to be a huge advantage

Level one charging sucks but at a 230 volt receptacle in Greece it should be twice as fast as level 1 charging in the US

Nice for tight spots! About the same cost as a used ten-year-old Nissan Leaf with similar range.
the rental company should have given you an adapter for the charging stations!

Cant wait to get one of these bad boys used.

This would be so perfect for me, but sadly, Canada doesn't have a quadricycle category so it's not legal.
Don't you all have a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle class? That's what it'd be in the US. Basically a four wheel moped.

UK spec vehicle comes with a level 2 adapter.
"the infrastructure is set up for Level 2s"
The level 1 infrastructure is millions of times more developed. Literally. Millions of times.
Gear shifter???
As an alternative, you could buy a used BMW i3 for that price

If only it didn't look like a port-o-potty on wheels. The acoustics sound like you're talking in one too.
If it made 45 mph I'd buy 1 here in Murca..,,
First I hope you and yours stay safe. I like this EV but not enough to move away from 2/3 wheels.

Only useful for old inner cities (not designed for cars) and small mountainous islands.
