Went to Shiretoko last year. Did 2 boat tours both side Utoro and Rausu (small boat tour). Did 1 whale watching but the weather was so bad, had to head back but saw 1 sperm whale. Did Wildlife Night Drive. Did 5 lakes, praying not to encounter a bear lol I went there in hoping to see a bear though I didn't get to see them while driving at all. Only saw some on boat tour and 1 during night drive. Sakura falls is also a good place to visit for salmon run. Got to see cherry salmon jumping the 3 meters falls. What a sight. Also saw a fox carrying a salmon, mind blown. Love Shiretoko, it's so untouched. Awe-inspiring experience for me.
This was brilliant - thanks for sharing :) I didn't know much about Hokkaido before going to Japan (apart from it's supposed to be good for skiing), but I learned so much about it since, and it's definitely somewhere I'd love to go. The bear and whale watching you note in your video looks like something I'd love to do one day! Such a beautiful coastline, too - I'll just have to add it to the long list of places to visit :)
Thanks Lisa!! Exactly my thoughts. Everyone always just thinks about Hokkaido as a winter destination but wow does it have incredible outdoors, wildlife, and adventure travel opportunities 😃
Thanks Alice!! Yes, I was totally blown away by Hokkaido - it's really not what you expect at all when you think of Japan. If you love the outdoors, wildlife, and Japanese culture, it really is amazing!
