Thank you! Great video and I can see this kind of self-hosting becoming the future. Instead of a whole bunch of subscription services, slack, workspace, cloud storage etc. it can be done and run internally at lower cost. Appreciate your work.
@@iridium8341 I mean I happen to appreciate what NextCloud is doing for the self hosting space, I would have been interested in the topic without a clickbait title. This feels like waaaay too many things at once. Like, it's trying to be Notion, and Google Drive, and Microsoft Office, and Slack *all at once*, with a *fraction* of the resources. Wouldn't it be a significantly better idea to focus on fully-fledging out the very basic things that everyone wants to work well? It's like the whole 80/20, 20/80 rule. you can see that exact thing you described in their mobile app. It's not there yet, at all. This is why I mainly use NC for CalDav and CardDav and the occasional SeedVault Backup. And not even that is smooth sailing. The mobile experience is where they really need to step up their game, since mobile is getting more important by the day.
I've moved away from nextcloud exactly because of this, I need something for file sharing and sync between devices that is fast, not an office suite that becomes slow and more unresponsive with every new update. SSO is still not fully implemented and is buggy, every major update will break things in the database and all your plugins so you need to run repair and do maintenance, the gallery will start breaking if you have a couple hundreds of images in there and many more.
Can someone explain to me why Nextcloud requires me to update from the terminal every 1-2 weeks? It’s ridiculous, it stops working completely until I manually ssh into my server and update it.
Self-hosting AI requires quite powerful hardware. Also, it's arguable that OpenAI (cannot be self-hosted) is better than Ollama (common self-hosted AI).
I have an Nextcloud instance, but have an actively used it in nearly a year. Is office functionality integrated? In previous versions, additional configuration was required in order to open and edit documents within Nextcloud. While that’s not an absolute dealbreaker, it was an added step that seemed unnecessary
Nextcloud has the Collabora Online Development Edition (CODE) Server as an App for x86 and ARM64 systems. You can also integrate a externally hosted CODE server.
i host a nextcloud instance on my pi 4 and it runs so unbelievably terribly all the time with no amount of optimization helping at all. worst self hosted software ive ever used.
