TheCarGuys are old. We all know this.
But as a consequence they have a passion for the 1990s cars that were brand new when they were first driving.
More dangerous, unreliable and uneconomical than modern day vehicles they may be. But 1990s cars are also better looking, cooler, more individual, lighter, more exhilarating, quirky, iconic and ultimately more… fun.
And this week it’s time to reveal the 90s cars that impetuous car purchaser, Damian, would buy in a heartbeat. A personal guided journey through the 10 cars that make his pulse quicken enough to hand over his debit card.

90s the best decade for me - 1996-99 particularly, so many legends launched during those 3 years…Elise, Evo 6, 306 rallye, TVR cerebra, E39 M5 and DC2 integra being my top six ❤

The 90s were indeed the absolute best. My garage over the years has moved away from modern to almost all 90s cars. Its better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. And with the reliabilty and comfort of the 90s cars... this is the absolute sweet spot.

For me there are two cars that encapsulate everything good about the 90's. The E31 BMW 850csi. Is there anything more cool past or present? Quad cam V12 with pop ups, without the Ferrari pricetag.
The other is the Lotus Carlton. Take a Vauxhall Carlton GSI and let Lotus change it so much, that Vauxhall no longer wanted their badge or name to have anything to do with it 😂 GM told Lotus to go to town with these cars, and they did. They increased the displacement of the engine, used forged pistons and rods, converted it to be turbocharged, wide arches and wider wheels, bigger brakes, complete suspension upgrade and they were only painted in dark green. Oh and they had a higher top speed than most supercars of the time as well 😂 bonkers stuff that could only have happened in the early 90's. The concorde era of "screw it, lets just do it anyway"

The fiat coupe is simply one of the most beautiful looking cars ever made, it is a work of art. The 20vt is off the scale performance wise. I own one, ive always wanted one ever since i saw one in leeds cc in 1996!

I'd still take a Nissan Bluebird over the vast majority of cars (all of 'em) - I loved them. I drive a '96 Celica, much as I love that, I'd swap it for an 80's Carina or a Bluebird. They just had "something" about them. The 90's Carina was also a cracking car - tough, comfy, fast enough..

Having bought my dad’s then 6 year old 300E back in 1997.. (I’m a similar age to you..) the 500E has always been one of my favourites.. The subtle muscular styling is spot on.. would love to have one, but.. that ship has sailed now. Great video!!! Love it!

The original NSX got a mild facelift in 97 / 98 in the form of perforated leather seats, new style wheels and a 3.2ltr engine with a 6 speed manual box. Still retained the pop up headlights. V-Tec howl at 5k and up was fantastic.

Some of the best cars were made in the 90's. They were a great example of the old blending with the newer. Cars became over engineered after this period. Yes the modern buyer wanted this and that, but what they didn't need was what they wanted.

Just wonderful Damian. Could not agree more, just so many gorgeous wonderful cars in the 90’s, the hard bit of course is finding a nice one that has not been ragged to death. Prices are going skyward mainly because ‘fun’ stuff is getting SO rare now. 😢

Some great choices there, but as a South African my list would include a few South African only "Specials...
The Opel Kadett 200 GSi "Superboss"
Either one of the Opel Kadett or Astra 200TS
    The BMW e30 325is EVOII
Great choice on the Nissan though, I had a friend in South Africa that had the turbo model, that thing was brutal on the highway, Nissan also had two very popular models there too in the form of the Sentra 200 STi and the Sabre 200 GXi, both 2L 16V that could hold their own on the street against much bigger and more powerful cars...

Great vid and no surprises that japanese cars feature so heavily. They were the pinicle of the 90s. Id take a healthy 200sx s14a over fiat coupe and the 300zx.. for its rear wheel drive, light weight, high driver engagement, but i think they go under the radar somewhat and are pretty damn rare in good condition now.

Ummmm.... Porsche engine? Hmmm I think you might very well find a number of Benz engineers still smiling from behind their steel rimmed spectacles - but twitching ever so slightly!! To save them from imploding - the M119 engine at 4973cc was most definitely lifted lock, stock and big chested barrel from the R119 Mercedes Benz 500SL. Athough Porsche had to widen the front frame rails, re-work the firewall, and massage a few other components to get everything to jive, the engine itself was standard, sporting identical 326PS/354lbft power/torque figures to the donor car.
I hope any nearby Mercedes engine developers nearby can now unclench 😏

My list of 90s cars would be a Toyota MR2 second gen, a Nissan 300zx, a first gen NSX and a last gen NSX type R, a Lotus Omega, a Ford Escort Cosworth, a 993 911 Turbo (S if available), a 928 GTS, a Ferrari 512TR, a Ferrari 355 berlinetta, manual if possible, a Lamborghini Diablo SE (Jota if possible) and a first gen Diablo VT. I would not mind a 90's BMW M5 V8 but would not hunt for one. I would like a Peugeot 205 GTI (I once could have bought two for 6k euros, I am officially an idiot). I would like a peugeot 405 Mi16. I like the Subaru SVX, but would like a manual conversion. I like the Isuzu Vehicross. Would love a good Land Cruiser and a Hilux of the period and some sort of ragtop Jeep. I own a Nissan Terrano, which is a 90s car, mine is a 2000 though. I'm sure there is more, but off the top of my head I think it's a nice collection of the period, and somewhat representative of the best done at the time. Oh, forgot the Mclaren F1, just to slum it a bit. :D

The Honda NSX was helped tuned by Ayrton Senna
The Toyota supra was a twin turbo 326bhp
I once owned a sierra sapphire RS Cosworth went to buy a Nissan 300ZX and was disappointed the 300ZX looked lovely
but even though it had 280bhp it felt so much slower than my Cossie maybe because the 4 cylinder Cosworth felt more punchy against the smoother 6 cylinder ZX300. The RS Cosworth was the best fun I ever had in a car..
However had a couple of Astra GTE'S and they were fun, But the cossie is a complete different beast against everything i have driven.
Especially with the turbo lag of a bigger turbo which pins you too the seat when it comes in.

No one will be drooling at an ev in 33 years time, thats for sure, even if they don't self 🔥

Another important feature of those cars is how they reflect the human race of the era.

As a MKIV owner you are not wrong they are stunning. The only thing put me off buying one was reliability but the FD is beautiful.

I'm from the USA...we only had the 1st generation NSX, not the 2nd, or the type R. Being from Ohio, and being a truck driver that used to deliver to the main Honda plant in 2016, I got to see one in person (since the new NSX was being built in the nearby PMC...Performance Motor Center), before it was released to the public. I think you should review the newer NSX

I Love 90s cars. I owned a 1996 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 Type-S Ralliart Edition, with AYC, ACD, and AWD. I sold it reluctantly after 250,000km when I suspected reliability problems. I now own a 2006 BMW E90 330i M-Sport, which has similar power, but is not as sure footed as the VR-4, that I miss.

There was a nice 190e Cosworth Evo at FOS Bonhams auction maybe. Be quick! Looks ace. Escort RS Cosworth obvs. But convinced Cosworth engines, and others, will become collectible.

I have a good Supra story, a friend of my dad shipped Dutch Bavaria beer to Saudi Arabia for the 1st war in the Gulf, the only 0% alcohol free beer at that moment and these containers where coming back empty so my dad went to Saudi Arabia and bought loads of Supra's. The Celica Supra's where the creasiest with big wings and wheel archers and digital dashboards, a lot of cool stuff they just drove for a short time and dumped them for very low prices but a lot of work to get all the sand out which became my job 🙁😁

I worked for a Ford dealer in car sales for a few years and our MD had an RS500 that we used to take out for a blast. Then a sierra cosworth sapphire.
We also had the RS1600i escort which I bought from a trade in cheaply.
Then the escort RS turbos. Which were good but not as raw as the 1600i.
Also had Audi Quattro, Peugeot 205 1.9 and we took a metro 6r4 in as a trade on a sapphire cosworth. We enjoyed a month of driving that vehicle from hell around the backroads of the NE.
    New cars nowadays !!! BORING.

I really wish Mazda had updated the FC2 RX-7 six port engine and offered it as a lower spec option for the FD. That six port was super reliable and I’m sure they could have found another 20 hp. Maybe then we’d have been able to see more of these beauties on the road.

If Chris Bangle won the right to design the Fiat Coupe, how come the image of the painted dash at 5.26 has a Pininfarina badge slapped across it?
    Any thoughts?

My brother had an RX-7 affini in black. It was an ex-show car and had done no miles when he bought it for a song. But then he sold it before the engine reached its first big service. I should have bought it off him and kept it.

I mean... You were standing right next to a beautiful yellow Integrale that looks to be in splendid condition. Why not take it home with you if you can afford it and rectify said criminal situation? I have been fortunate enough to ride along in several of them going up and down mountain roads, it is such a hoot and bursts of charme. I sincerely doubt any of your Top 10 could rival it in those categories, even if they are all great machines.

I'd argue strongly that these 90s cars are better build, better engineered and actually safer - devoid of ridiculous touchscreen, assisted everything and increasingly poor build with substandard quality parts. All cars have both a short shelf life and far too much complexity with often costs far too much to fix. Cars from the 90s were engineered not build to a cost. Excellent video
