Thank you so much for the tutorial! I just finished crocheting a slightly bigger version of this bag for my friend, using a thicker tshirt yarn as not much yarn selection is available in my country. I have made several adjustments like using sc instead of hdc for the base. Using the thicker yarn also gave me a bigger hole at the magic ring but decreasing the no. of crochet lesser than 12 as yours does not work as it'll not produce a flat base. At the end I just incorporate another row of sc to cover the big hole at the magic ring after completing the bag and it looks great! I also reduced the no. of row for the base so I ended up with around 56 stitch instead of 80 to compensate the thicker yarn.
Thank you, Naily! I'm so glad to hear your bag came out nice. It's a good idea to experiment and modify to make your work look pretty because we all crochet with different tension and when the yarn size is different, the outcome may not be the same. Good job and thank you for sharing your work process! Happy crocheting!
Thank u so much! This was easy peasy. I made it a convertible backpack/slingbag and made the strap separate to hold weight as a sling bag. I will be using ur pattern bunches. I wish I could add a picture.

Hi, Marina, it's not a big bag but I think it's suitable for both a child and adult. I would recommend either adding rounds to the base and bag body or use bigger size yarn to make the bag bigger.
If I don’t want to do the pattern, can I just continue with double or half double crochet instead? Edit: I finished it. I used weight 4 red heart yarn in black. I didn’t do the pattern stitch, instead I did a simple half double crochet. I just did the one color. I used royal blue beads on the ends and for the button. I really like how it turned out. Thanks for the tutorial!

I was was knowing only double crochet and single that we used do on our saree borders. From your tutorial I learnt mini back pack and I made one.Thank you .How much yarn is required for project
Just one quick question on this bag. Would you think that the Hoooked Recycled Cotton Ribbon Yarn XL would work for this? It is 80% cotton and is still a 5 gauge yarn but looks a bit wider than what you use. I've never worked with the bernat deco or the ribbon yarn so I'm not sure how equivalent they'd be. But the bernat doesn't have tons of color options available right now so I'm hoping you'd think the ribbon yarn would work OK!

can i use a thermal stitch instead of the patter stitch you mentioned since i am using regular yarn and it doesnt look as good with the pattern stitch you provided....
Hi Jayni, I'm thinking you could try slightly smaller size of crochet hook to make the ring tighter and flatter. And you can add a round or two to get the size of base you want. I know it can be tricky, my tension changes from project to project.
hi raine, are you going to be having any tutorials for a Christmas doily and placemat/holder for fork ,knife and spoon. to be placed on placemathave a good day.
When I follow your instructions exactly, I finish the 9th round of the base with like 100 st. You say it's supposed to be 80. I did it twice. I don't understand why it's off ..I'm just gonna keep going and hope it works.
Is this stitch the same as the spice stitch? I made a bag for my sister using the 'spice stitch' as instructed by the tutorial and this looks very similar. Either way, I love it and as soon as I get the supplies, I'm definitely making this! Thank you for the tutorial!
@@handmadebyraine Oh, so that's what she was saying! She had a rather heavy accent so I could only go by what I thought I was hearing, haha. I'll be honest, I wasn't 100% convinced it was called 'spice' either, since I couldn't find other tutorials for the stitch in question! But yes, the Spike stitch makes much more sense!
@@handmadebyraine Oh no, don't worry, you're perfectly fine! You speak very clearly, and I had no problem following along with your video. I was simply referring to a different tutorial I watched a couple months back, created by another individual - it was also a great tutorial and I got a lovely bag out of it, but while following along I thought she called it a 'spice stitch' but now I realize she was saying spike stitch. I'm still very knew to crochet so I didn't know any better! :D

Hi Jayni, I'm thinking you could try slightly smaller size of crochet hook to make the ring tighter and flatter. And you can add a round or two to get the size of base you want. I know it can be tricky, my tension changes from project to project.
handmadebyraine Thank you! I will try this and let you know how it goes
hi raine, are you going to be having any tutorials for a Christmas doily and placemat/holder for fork ,knife and spoon. to be placed on placemathave a good day.
Hi Nancy, I am looking for new ideas to make Christmas doily or placemat. I think I will make more Christmas tree ornaments too :)
Can you use t-shirt yarn
If you wanted the bag to be larger, would you increase the number of rows?
Jayni Allen l won't your number

Thanks for explaining in english 🙏👍❤️👏😀
You are very welcome!
When I follow your instructions exactly, I finish the 9th round of the base with like 100 st. You say it's supposed to be 80. I did it twice. I don't understand why it's off ..I'm just gonna keep going and hope it works.
Hi Danielle, I hope it worked out. It takes a lot of counting for sure :)
Is this stitch the same as the spice stitch? I made a bag for my sister using the 'spice stitch' as instructed by the tutorial and this looks very similar. Either way, I love it and as soon as I get the supplies, I'm definitely making this! Thank you for the tutorial!
You're welcome, Krista! If you mean "spike stitch", then yes it is.
Hi Krista! I didn't know I had heavy accent! :)
Oh ok, didn't realize you were talking about another person.
These are so adorable! Thank you!
Thank you, Sandy!
Finally english 😍!thank u for sharing.god bless.
You're welcome 😊
I love this ! Can’t wait to make it!
Thank you, Katelynn! Have fun making the backpack!
@@handmadebyraine super sister, keep it up, what a creative mind 👌
What size button do you need for both the string and the bag
I used half inch beads.
Wow I like it very much I will try
Have fun!
Is this bag good for college students. I would love to use this for it an for my laptop.
This bag can be for anybody, I have the dimensions listed in written pattern.
@@handmadebyraine ok thank you!!!!
Could I make this out of the Bernat maker outdoor yarn? It’s 68 per cent Acrylic and 32 per cent Nylon
You can try, people have used different sizes of yarn for this bag.
thank you so much i am going to make this bag for school
Most welcome 😊
So when you start your first round with the second color so you just carry your main color?
Hi Shirley, yes I do, I don't cut it off.
Hi, I am sorry if it was already mentioned but where did you find the button and 2 beads?
Sorry for delayed reply, Barbara! This was a big bead kit from JoAnn.
How many rows of the regular color did u hve before adding the cream color
Hi Jamie, when I'm done with the base and start the main part I crochet 2 rounds with main color and then join the second color. Here is the link to written pattern: handmadebyraine.com/how-to-crochet-backpack/
I hope this helps!
I cannot get this yarn in the UK. Can you suggest a suitable alternative which will come out the same size please?
I don't know what type of yarn is available in UK because I live in US but you could try this website to find alternative options: yarnsub.com/
Is there anyway to rescale the sizing of this backpack to 8x8 inches (and adjust the flap as well)? 🥺 I really like the pattern but I was looking for a smaller sized bag to make.
Hi Sara, you are welcome to experiment with less number of stitches. Or maybe use finer yarn.
Very well done. You're amazing
Thank you so much!
