I identified as an atheist and was very angry with Christians for several years, because of spiritual abuse and deep hurts inflicted upon me by people I thought were my brothers and sisters in Christ. The more I got involved the more that curtain peeled back and I saw ugliness, hypocrisy and even evil behind it. I found myself being betrayed by people I had trusted. The first time it happened I chalked it up to people indulging in their sin nature. After seeing it in church after church, I started to think maybe it was a problem with Christianity as a whole. I started finding reasons to pick apart the theology to explain away how people could profess Christ yet treat people so horribly. God gently called me back to Him, but it was a rocky road to get here. I still have lingering distrust and that fear of getting too close to people. Thank you for this message.
