The old man is not to be trusted because he said at the end of chapter 2 he programed the roller-coaster (oranges crystal caverns) and in the roller-coaster the rainbow friends were chasing us the old man also says suspicious stuff like hey did any of you hear... wait there was actually an sos light? I mean you guys must be good at finding things. He also said blasted security measures. So he is probably not to be trusted.
My theory is that in Chapter 3 the old man's name, I think he stays behind bc he has a meeting with the rainbow friends. I think that he makes up the plans, he was there in the forest as a trap to lead us to the rainbow friends. When he saw Blue for the first time, he said he wanted to get outta there, but in the end he stays. It was all an act to make us trust him so he could trick us and turn us in. Red kept him alive bc he is very important to them, he is their creator, he knows so much about them too. I think they were once all human but red used the lookies as power and turned them into the rainbow friends by using the lookies color as their color and put them on like hats! so if red put on a blue lookie for human version of blue, then put him into the machine and fused their DNA and that's how the rainbow friends were made! also I think pink will be redesigned but will perhaps be the biggest rainbow friends ever seen! Red, ( a failure transformation of a lookie with Trenton or an ally of the old man) has created pink but not only that but he also created lime( a fusion of yellows head, blues body, and greens arms! he fuses them and himself with them and he is so upset from being a failed experiment he makes himself the ultimate beast and fuses himself plus new powers and creates ultimate power but we have to power up a huge laser gun to unfuse them! so we collect batteries, fireworks, and mystery potions and use them to power it up and unfuse the rainbow friends and make pink smaller and when we do it transforms all the rainbow friends back to human including red! and we discover who he truly is!
