- Welcome to the worst stage in the entire game, bar none. The entirety of Yi Ling is a beginners trap so I struggle like hell on my first few playthroughs through here. First of all, your entire army is at a pretty severe morale disadvantage so everyone will already start to lose without your intervention. And once they do, enemy officers will gain morale and just go on to roll over another of your allies. So that already sucks, but that's par for the course.
What really screws you over here is when Lu Xun orders Zhu Ran to commence the fire attack. He appears in a small road in the center-west part of the map, where no allies are placed. So he runs straight towards his objective, which is just at the end of the road next to Liu Bei's forces. What's made this into a beginners trap is that, while Lu Xun has a cutscene mentioning the attack, Zhu Ran doesn't get an indicator telling you where he appears. If you don't happen to notice his troops appearing on the map? Tough shit. And let me remind you this was before you could check sub officer's placement on the map, so you have no way of tracking Zhu Ran's exact location like later installments. Officers don't even get a brighter dot on the map, only the commander does. This makes it very difficult and very annoying when you're trying to find a specific sub officer.
So yes unless you're super observant or have some kind of clairvoyance Zhu Ran is going to succeed in his fire attack. And when he does, your army's already low morale will plummet to the ground, whilst the enemy's rises sky high and continues to soar as they slaughter your allies and push in on your commander.
Liu Bei at least has the common sense to run like hell, so he'll retreat past the Stone Sentinel Maze once the fire attack happens. Zhuge Liang will appear to help deal with the oncoming enemies and keep Liu Bei safe. The rest of your army is almost guaranteed to die out unless you stick close to one of them and protect him enough to rebuild his crumbled morale. But more than likely you're going to have to charge the commander on your own.
ON TOP OF ALL THAT the enemy officers in this are buffed up to hell for no particular reason. Gan Ning, Lu Xun, Lu Meng, Sun Quan, Zhu Ran, and some random Gate Captain next to Sun Shang Xiang all have absurdly high stats for no apparent reason making fighting all of them take much longer than it ought to, increasing the odds of them healing themselves to prolong the fight even further. And since it takes longer to defeat them, rescuing your allies is even harder. I am convinced the only reason SSX doesn't have this buff is because the dev team screwed up and accidentally gave it to that random Gate Captain near her.
AND THEN TO FURTHER MAKE YOUR LIFE HELL the island the commander is on is filled to the brim with archers. Archers in this game are broken, unbalanced, annoyances with pinpoint accuracy, absurdly high damage output, high aggression, and way more health than an archer should rightly have. So yeah, hope you knew that was coming and brought some defense increasing items. If not, enjoy getting riddled as you try to fight past a buffed up Lu Xun and Sun Quan.
I handle this stage much easier in later playthroughs because I knew what to expect, but this entire stage is basically a beginners trap. So your first 1 or 2 times is just guaranteed to suck. I'd explain more, but I'm nearing the text cap in the description box. Why does youtube even HAVE that cap?
This level is the definition of frustration. Not going to lie, I had a few controller casualties due to this level.

If you where playing on very hard, I'd understand, anything lower? You just need to run around and defeat the officers directly, ignore everything else

Perfect description of this battle. A fucking nightmare me and my buddy lost so many times on it. And we didn't have a memory card so we had to start the whole campaign over!

The voice acting here is better than the 'OOOO Kingdom' thankfully.

Im replaying this game and I forgot about this stage. I got Zhao Yun's 3rd spear with bow defense right before this at Mt Dingjun. Lucky timing for me. It still sucked though.
Very Hard difficult a characters ask Lu Meng. Gan Ning. Lu Xun. Sun Quan. Zhu Ran. they defense are weak in this dificult level

I remember struggling unbeliebably hard on this stage as Wei Yan. This was such an odd difficulty spike for my young self to have to experience lol.
Fun fact about how Ultra-Hell this particular level is, by the way. If you manage to prevent the Fire Attack? Zhuge Liang never shows up.
Well, at least you get to hear one of my favourite tracks "Under Pressure". But, yeah, this stage is quite hard, even when you know what you're doing and stop Zhu Ran.

Even with 4th weapons and maxed out its tough as the stats were drastically different per character and my items sucked. This was a joy in pain hahaha!
This stage is a pain in the ass... I was trying to make an attempt on stopping zhu ran before his fire attack was successful.

Redd1da I mean. That specific fire attack is in every single DW game barring 1 and 2. What makes it such a pain in the ass here is finding Zhu Ran.
Dejin Oda it also sucks that every male non generic officer have attack and defense like they are the main boss this stage is a real challenge
@@Redd1da Yeah every "Kingdom General" in this level is "Lu Bu" difficult and Gan Ning is absolute NIGHTMARE FUEL since He can insta-kill you without warning with His Musou Attack
@texasgent4694 yes bruh I played this stage many of times, it's best to play with 2 players
