To add to the Netherportal not needing corners section: If you have light giving blocks such as Glowstone, Sea Lanterns or Red Stone Lamps, you can dress up and light up even a basic nether portal by putting those in the corners instead. Froglights work too, of course.

Also do not use silk touch, use fortune and then just craft blocks, that will safe you up to three inventory slots
