@@mimouneh7055 As someone who started with WinForms I can tell you it is a lot more easier to program than webforms. I think its a good way for someone new to programming to get started. The speed with which you can get a fairly decent app developed also makes it quite fun. Unfortunately most companies seem to want web developers (but hey, it pays the bills, and its still software development with its own different rewards).
Part of WPF's demise was that the developers at Microsoft gave it too much ability to do stuff beyond UI, letting people do anything imaginable with it, building code monstrosities that were reviled by developers inheriting that code. I heard stories of developers quitting or not taking a job because it involved working with XAML. If Microsoft wants to revive WPF's popularity, it has to spinoff a variant of it where XAML's capabilities don't span beyond UI. Having said that, I still believe Winforms is the best and most versatile platform for developing applications and I'm so glad Microsoft keeps improving it.
@@philico999 That I am curious. In fact I have seen monstrosities in WinForms, I couldn't even imagine someone still used it. WPF and XAML are quite good, at least in my opinion.
Great to hear that WinForms is still very high on your agenda! Over the last decade we developed a huge code base around WinForms and we were unsure if Win11 will just slowly abandon it in favor of WinUI/WPF. Only thing we could wish for is that Visual Studio should not always randomly reorder the designer files, so merging them and comparing changes will be possible (essential for Git).
Well, similar here, only that we devoted a lot code around WebForm. Any chance that WebForm will resurrect? The client-triggered svr event maybe is not favored to client-side JS, but WebForm is well for composition of markups, so we use it to write very long article which has deep embedded sections. We also use webform to composite controls.
Be sure WinForms will be usable technology for at least 10 years. MS simply don't have ANYTHING BETTER. WPF was good idea, but implemented most horrible way, so until they redesign WPF you can easy make WinForms apps w/o concurrency.

You can already have Acrylic surfaces (blurry transparent ones) in WinForms applications through XAML islands. Though you can't place WinForms elements on top of them; you have to use UWP elements there.

Agreed. It sucks having to live at 100% DPI or remember to swap every time I want to work with the designer. It's also hard to teach new developers that they can't change their DPI without causing chaos in the designer.cs files.

It's really a wrapper around win32. The compatibility nightmare is not worth it. WPF did exactly what you describe, along with everything that followed.
In VS2022 when I go and create a new WinForm project (Core, non-Framework) none of the WinForm controls show up in the Toolbox. I've reset the toolbox, I've restarted VS, rebooted the machine, nothing works. When I "show all" I see the items but they are all disabled / blacked out. When I create a WinForm project using 4.8 Framework, the controls all show up fine in Toolbox and I can drag and drop them just fine onto the form in the designer. I've searched quite a bit and have not found a solution to get those controls to show in the Toolbox in a stock DotNet 6 WinForm project from the template. Any ideas?
I am running it on an old Surface first gen with 4 GB. It's working OK. For bigger projects I suggest more RAM, though. Everything around 8 is really fine.

WebView2 is not good for my application when I develop the app to view pdf file in UserForm online(without download to my machine). This feature is easier to use VBA to make the job done. If you have another way to suggest. Please guide me....
Speaking of fonts. Will we ever see more crisp text rendering in WinForms controls? Rendering quality, pixel accurate measuring and alignment is really difficult.
GDI and GDI+ will be the primary rendering engines for now. We don't have any plans to change this. That said, WinForms now being .NET, you can for example comparatively easy implement Controls based on DirectWrite or even SkiaSharp.
By default, it lists the types ([data] classes) which are defined in your project or in assemblies your project is referencing. There are options in the bottom of the dialog, which are meant to reduce noise - but you can practically let show any available type.
Hello, trying to find an answer to my predicament. I have the community edition of VS 22 and I choose asp.net Web and then choose MVC and choose authentication but the work or school option is missing. I am following a lab and their version of VS had that option. That option would have allowed me to choose on premises and finally let me put in my adfs detail as that is what I am trying to do. Does anyone know why it's missing or how can I do that bit?
Unfortunately, no. MDI is not really a supported or innovated UI technology anymore. It's not likely we will invest in that. But that's more a Windows than a WinForms decision.
Delphi form designer had some very cool features. Even basic features, rename a control, it's events also renamed if only accessed by one control. The one I loved, select a bunch of controls, convert to a user control and it scooped up the code as well as the controls. Much better designer.

I do miss several Delphi (Pascal) language features such as Sets and the ability to create new types from strings of different lengths. Still, need to move to languages that offer contract work.

I won't even ask about default background color or forecolors I guess. sigh. Should I even mention toolbar colors, menustrip colors, ....

The legacy WinForms Designer for .NET Framework is still there. But we won't innovate for .NET Framework. .NET (what was previously called .NET Core, but we call it just .NET now) is the way to go.
You don;t need a TB. Not at all. For just the WinForms workload, I install it on a Surface First Gen, 128 GByte, 4 Megs for backwards compatibility tests, and it's running fine. It still runs 8.1, although I would not at all recommend that. Win 10 it should be.
I think we should all revert back to VS IDE 2013. You guys made it sure that with each new version, the IDE gets worse. I am using VS on multiple computers and servers, and the problems are the same. I am using VS community and VS entreprise, I am using win 10 and win server 2019. Lame! IT IS NOT WORKING. 1, it is toooo slow. It freezes most of the time (on all platforms) and 60% of its lifetime it runs at 100% CPU. At first I thought it was Resharper. A couple of weeks ago i reformatted my PC, 32 GB ram, 1 T SSD drive, NVIDIA GTX 1080 card, a Microsoft keyboard and mouse, installed VS community, no Resharper, no other extensions. LAME! I am thinking changing my whole development environment to Linux or Android. Oh, and what is it with you guys and multi-monitor systems? I can't seem to open an application on my main window. It never opens where it is supposed to be. The worse is if I have 4 screens open, and I double click an icon, the application will always open hidden behind the screen holding a remote desktop open, wherever that is. YOU ARE MICROSOFT! I shouldn't be talking about these issues in the third millennium!

Winforms is significantly bigger than UWP. It''s basically the core of bespoke Windows-centric business software all round the world for decades. I think Microsoft is been subtly saying they aren't really going to do anything with UWP moving forward and have suggested migrations to Windows App SDK.
Great to see WinForms is still being updated. In my company we use it a lot.
I need a company like yours. I am faster at WinForms than anything, but everyone wants to pay me to fix web sites and I hate it (except the money).

WinForms' appearance is the least attractive out of the three options, though. The other options being pure WPF and UWP elements through XAML islands.
Winforms may be old but it’s still gold. I never got into WPF/Silverlight. Thanks Microsoft for continuing to improve it.
I always looked at wpf/Silverlight with disdain. Winforms is strong! If I wanted to build something "weblike", I'd use the browser apis.

XAML was the reason why I never to get on the WPF fanboys/gals club./ I love WinfForms and the new Hybrid app support.

We need the design time rendering of the control, which seemingly is not supported by razor?

Funny, but WinForms works WAY faster than WPF! Even GPU help is not needed.

The legacy WinForms Designer for .NET Framework is still there. But we won't innovate for .NET Framework. .NET (what was previously called .NET Core, but we call it just .NET now) is the way to go.

You don;t need a TB. Not at all. For just the WinForms workload, I install it on a Surface First Gen, 128 GByte, 4 Megs for backwards compatibility tests, and it's running fine. It still runs 8.1, although I would not at all recommend that. Win 10 it should be.

I think we should all revert back to VS IDE 2013. You guys made it sure that with each new version, the IDE gets worse. I am using VS on multiple computers and servers, and the problems are the same. I am using VS community and VS entreprise, I am using win 10 and win server 2019. Lame!
IT IS NOT WORKING. 1, it is toooo slow. It freezes most of the time (on all platforms) and 60% of its lifetime it runs at 100% CPU. At first I thought it was Resharper. A couple of weeks ago i reformatted my PC, 32 GB ram, 1 T SSD drive, NVIDIA GTX 1080 card, a Microsoft keyboard and mouse, installed VS community, no Resharper, no other extensions. LAME!
I am thinking changing my whole development environment to Linux or Android.
Oh, and what is it with you guys and multi-monitor systems? I can't seem to open an application on my main window. It never opens where it is supposed to be. The worse is if I have 4 screens open, and I double click an icon, the application will always open hidden behind the screen holding a remote desktop open, wherever that is.

You don't provide the latest .NET for UWP but for WinForms. This isn't good.
Winforms is significantly bigger than UWP. It''s basically the core of bespoke Windows-centric business software all round the world for decades.
I think Microsoft is been subtly saying they aren't really going to do anything with UWP moving forward and have suggested migrations to Windows App SDK.
